Can I check your bag?

lizard lips - 8-18-2009 at 08:31 PM

Yesterday I took the bus from Ensenada that goes direct to the Tj airport. Prior to boarding the bus there was military there (they are never there) and they searched my luggage. At the first toll everyone was told to exit the bus and the military searched the bus and everyones luggage. At the Rosarito toll, again, everyone was told to exit the bus and the military searched the bus and all luggage. When I got to the airport my bag first went through the x-ray machine and then I pushed the button at the aduana station and I got the red light. Bag searched again. Went to the Aeromexico check-in area and my bag was gone through again. When I finally arrived at the airport here in Chihuahua I got my bag and the military pointed at me, and you guesses it----My bag was checked again. A little over kill? I took it in stride because there was nothing I could do about it anyway. What a day.....

Something that's always bugged me. I don't like them touching my "personal" clothing items with their bare hands, so, I'm considering pulling the box of latex gloves out of the first aid backpack and handing the guy a pair prior to him groping through my unmentionables.

Who knows where their hands have been...:o ?

This last time my bag was searched the young man pulled out a pair of undies and asked if they were mine, knowing full well they were.

"No, they are my husbands."

He put them back, zipped up the bag and climbed out of the truck.

I always laugh when driving up and down the northern half of the peninsula as it seems like some days I get searched at every checkpoint and other days they all just wave me through.

As they say in golf, it's the rub of the green...

Last couple of times I went to San Felipe via Ensenada I've been stopped at the intersection of 3 and 5...Twice. One stop on 3 and then 100 yds south on 5. Both checkpoints are within shouting distance.

And coming back?

You guessed it.

I go to TJ most every Tuesday to play billiards. Carry my cues. Last week I was asked what was in the case. Two tacos, sez me. The soldier thought I was being cute and looked. Today, the same guy was there and remembered.

I'm now known as 'taco man'. ;D

Put your stinky dirty clothes on top. Fold the clothes neatly on the bottom and throw the top layers. It works every time.

Yeah, until it don't.

Then, for added effect, I'd take a dump on 'em.

BTW, works for what? ;D

You could try putting a couple of pairs of these in your suitcase along with other dirty clothes.

It might work!!

Paulina,

I don't care for it either .... so, I pack everything in large zipper lock plastic bags .... that way they can see everything in each bag and no need to touch anything.

Maybe someone should start marketing a see-through suitcase. If I hade a pair of shorts with the decorations like Corky posted above, I'd want everybody who works for customs to see them.

you think they could put some kind of seal on the bag that says it was inspected (one you'd have to remove to open it)....

Bajahowodd - 8-19-2009 at 11:37 AM

Sounds like eventually, everyone will pack only dirty clothes and launder them at their destination.

Uh huh. Just like those seals the shipping companys put on doors of trailers loaded with computers that reach their destination, still sealed, half empty.
It's a teamster slogan, "They fell off the truck."

Left on a flight to Monterrey this morning and expected the bag to get checked and it was. Took a bus to Saltillo for a little work then took another bus (6 1/2 hours) to San Luis Potosi where I am now so I was only checked once all day.

I'll fill you in on my bus trip to Guadalajara on Saturday.

Reminds me of when I was trying to get a container out of customs in Buenos Aires years ago. It took a few weeks to get all of the paperwork done and "adjust" the customs duties down to a manageable level. In the meantime I would go down on Friday's to the customs warehouse where my container was stored and paid for all the guys "BBQ" that afternoon. They took care to make sure my container was always covered and surrounded with other containers so nobody on night/weekend duty would mess with it.

They told me a story of a recent "client" who wouldn't pay for container "insurance". When he finally showed up with his stamped paperwork in place he checked the seals on the two heavy straps going around his large, wooden container from top to bottom. All seemed in order and he left with a very smug look on his face that he had managed to get his stuff through customs without paying for a single Friday BBQ. Imagine his surprise when the container arrived at his business to discover that it was full of nothing but trash.

They had hoisted his container up with a forklift, cut the straps on the bottom, emptied the contents, filled it with trash and then added short sections of new strap to the cut sections on the bottom before lowering it down again.

The seals all remained in place and who would figure on turning the thing over to check on the bottom?

I did have a good laugh at that one and was thankful that I had been advised to pay for a few kilos of beef and a damajuana or two...

Corky1--rarely do I laugh out loud when I read posts. Yours was hilarious.
