Blocks of ice

dianaji - 8-20-2009 at 04:09 PM

Just bought a new larger cooler. Seems i never bring enough ice and wonder if i can buy it in rosarito or further south...if so, where?

Hook - 8-20-2009 at 04:13 PM

Well, your five minutes are ticking................I just couldn't resist.

Hook - 8-20-2009 at 04:16 PM

Seriously, there must be dozens of places south of Rosarito that carry block ice. Even our OXXOs and EXTRAs carry them over here on the mainland. You can get it in raw or purified ice form. There is an ice house in San Quintin, Mulege, Loreto, Guerrero Negro, and so on. EVERY major and minor city will have them.

Diana, this is on the bottom of all your posts:

"He/she who asks a question is a fool for 5 minutes. He/she who never asks a question is a fool forever.

Confucious (amended quote)

dianaji - 8-20-2009 at 04:22 PM

thanks for seriously! that's what i wanted to hear. i have never bought block ice even in the states, even tho they have ice houses.

dianaji - 8-20-2009 at 04:27 PM

oh, i get it now! thanks for clarifying, dk. sometimes i am slow...however, not too often!

Bajahowodd - 8-20-2009 at 04:30 PM

Gee. I thought you had a place down there that had, like, electricity. Why would you need block ice if you are only going to your place in Rosarito?
Just asking.:)

dianaji - 8-20-2009 at 04:33 PM

no, it's la mision, and it has the poles up since february, however, still no electricity...seems the contractor took off with the $$$...however, we are still working on having it working. now, if u can help with that!!!

bajabound2005 - 8-20-2009 at 06:22 PM

Diana- you might want to try dry ice for longer periods. They sell it at Smart & Final STATESIDE.

dianaji - 8-20-2009 at 06:24 PM

they have smart and final in rosarito...do u think they have it there? i have never bought ice, so was unaware of this. thanks so much for this info.

Another post referenced not ingesting the free ice you get at the beer stores. (I must have missed that in the guide books before our first trip.) Does Hook's post reference the same thing that there is purified and dirty ice?

Absolutely, there is dirty ice in Mexico. But every bag/block of purified ice I have seen is always labeled as such. The dirty ice is what you see being dispensed at the large ice houses in huge blocks. It's the ice that fishermen use to keep their catch cold. It's the ice that beer houses use to chill beers and give away.

Actually, the odds that you would get sick from ingesting even this dirty ice are probably pretty low. The municipal water over here has a chlorine content that is about 3 times what the EPA in the US recommends.

Bajahowodd - 8-20-2009 at 10:18 PM

So true. Decades ago, the water was very toxic. But today, in almost every major municipality, tap water is safe. Most of the warnings that get people to buy bottled water are more about the fact that whether you go to Ensenada or Enid, OK, the change in the water can cause a certain amount of gastrointestinal discomfort.

BajaNuts - 8-20-2009 at 11:00 PM

thanks, howodd and hook, I was leaning that direction. Any time there's a major change in the diet it affects all the parts.

Russ - 8-21-2009 at 07:05 AM

I'm way South of you but use to be any place selling cubes sold blocks too. Shouldn't be a problem where you're headed. Good luck with your power.

Ice House In Ensenada I Use

I buy my block ice in Ensenada from an ice house east of the "Three Heads Plaza".

To get there turn left at the street directly in front of the "Three Heads Plaza" and head east about 10 blocks. On the right there is a big red building with a loading dock in front. They may require a minimum purchase. Last time I was there I bought about 150 kilos of ice for nominal pesos.

I have never done stairs. My house had them but I couldn't figure out how to use them.

bajabound2005 - 8-21-2009 at 11:43 AM

Smart & Final in Mexico does not carry dry ice, that's why I specified stateside...but dry ice lasts longer. Good for keeping things frozen, too.

I've seen it for sale in at least one grocery store up there as well so there's probably more. Pretty sure it was Von's on Otay Lakes Road, across from Lowe's. In the store, near the front door under lock and key.

I have a 198 QT (GOTT) ice chest and refill it on longer trips in SAN IGNACIO at one of the largest plants in BAJA SUR. :wow: ;)

Eighteen wheelers load up there with L-A-R-G-E blocks
These guys are more than happy to knock off a chunk to fit your new ice chest. :smug:

Everyone in town knows where it is .... ;D
Close to highway ... :o

So, can you clear something up, Diane?

Did you ever get your ice?

How far "south of Rosarito" are you going?

Hey Diana, that webpik.com site you used to host your photos sure didn't last... unless you moved the photos to a new album? Use photobucket.com like most of us here on Nomad... it is free, it resizes the photos when you upload them from your PC to a variety of choices (pick 'large' or '15" screen' for biggest on Nomad without distorting the forum sideways).

Not for me... ?? You click on one or more photo files and it loads them onto your photobucket album, at a reduced size and gives you a direct posting link for message boards. It isn't instant, but within a minute.
