Los Arcos Restaurant Chula Vista

Bajahowodd - 8-24-2009 at 12:09 PM

Not a review, but a request for input. I just read a glowing review of Los Arcos in the latest issue of Westways Magazine. We've been to Los Arcos in TJ, Mexicali and Mazatlan. They have restaurants all around Mexico. It seems that their opening last year in Chula Vista is their first foray into the US, with plans to build other locations. I believe they are the first Mexican Restaurant operator since Grupo Anderson (Carlos n Charlies, Senor Frogs) to expand North. Always loved Los Arcos' Tacos Gobernador. Anyway, I looked the Chula Vista location up on Yelp and found decidedly mixed reviews. So, I was wondering if any of the many Nomads in the san Diego area have been there, and what their candid reviews are. Should I consider going their when visiting friends and relatives in the area? Or with so many fine Mexican places around, should I skip them?

You might want to post this question on chowhound.com - on the California forum to get a response from the San Diego chowhounders.

Also, on a side note, the family that operates Saverio's in TJ and other restaurants, has a restaurant in San Diego. Additionally, there is Ortega's in Hillcrest and Las Ranas, a Mexico city offshoot, in San Diego.

Thanks Jan. Fact is that there have been no posts about this restaurant on Chowhound since those made when it opened a year ago. I merely thought that with locations in TJ and Mexicali, I might get a hit on someone here on the board. As for the other restaurants you cited, perhaps I could have made it more clear, in that I was referring to big restaurant chains, and not offshoots of family operations.

You want recommendations of only chain restaurants? Please clarify.

Ken

I have been to Los Arcos (Chula Vista/Bonita) and it wasn't as good as the Los Arcos in TJ sister restaurant. I thought it was a bit pricey for what you got as well.

Savario's "Romesco" on the same street as Los Arcos but in Bonita (1 1/2 miles east) is one on the best restaurants in San Diego, period! IMO

Sorry to confuse, Ken. it appears to have gotten a little muddy. My foremost reason for the post was just answered by you. As an aside, I mentioned that the chain was planning expansion into the US, much as has Grupo Anderson. Jan apparently thought I was excluding non-chain restaurants as examples of Mexico-based restaurant operators opening offshoots in the US.

Just ate at a Los Arcos in Guadalajara and it was great! My policy is not to eat seafood if the restaurant is not on or very close to an ocean but since I have been sick from bad shrimp in Mazatlan and Acapulco that went out the window. They have great food there and the best cheviche I ever had. I will have to try these closer to home and see if it compares.

We had a blast at the Los Arcos in Tijuana (not downtown)/ Agua Caliente side of town... for our Viva Baja Cactus dinner party in 2006... That was Antonio's (BajaCactus) idea... it was GREAT!

Hey David....Where's Awful Art? Havn't seen him for a while. He was here about a year ago.
Allright, I hope.
