Propane lights for top of propane cylinder

Keri - 8-25-2009 at 07:31 AM

Does anyone know where I can find one and also what they are called . I've looked on the internet but must be asking for the wrong thing. All I get is lanterns (like coleman)or propane heaters. I've seen the lights , I know they exist but can't find them. Help please,k:?::?::?:

David K - 8-25-2009 at 07:50 AM

Walmart, Camping World, REI, if I understand correctly what you want Keri... They are called 'lanterns'... use a mantle... run on propane or gas...

Keri........
Google....propane lights. There's lots of info.

bajalou - 8-25-2009 at 08:05 AM

The hardware store in San Felipe had a somewhat similar light that attached to a 5g propane tank - Great light and much less expensive than the ones using the little cylinders. Check the local ones in your area.

Russ - 8-25-2009 at 08:15 AM

Once I figured out what the heck it was called I got some results.

OOPS... I need to read your post more carefully. For some reason I imagined you wanted "tree" to raise the lantern above the tank:?: I'm loosing it!

I have a Coleman lantern same as pictured on my patio, but I hang it off a ceiling beam with a propane hose connecting the lantern to a 5# propane bottle on the floor. I have the lantern lit for some 6 hours an evening, the bottle lasts for months.

bajalou - 8-25-2009 at 08:17 AM

The ones I was referring to, are a lantern only attachment - not a distribution tree. Might be a Mexico only item.

Keri - 8-25-2009 at 08:50 AM

Ok Now your getting it. DK not that lantern, that's all I have been finding. Yes I want the one that attaches to a 5 gal tank. Russ that tree works ,now what I'm looking for goes on top of that connection. Thanks guys.

You're All Wrong - Here is what Kerri is looking For !

ElFaro - 8-25-2009 at 09:15 AM

This is why it's soo important to speak Spanish in Baja IMHO...you learn about products from the Mexicans you can't find in the US.

Keri...these lanterns are made and sold by DEPSA...a Mexican Co. that manufacturs and sells propane products.

Here is a link to the Co. website...

http://www.depsa.com.mx/clients/lpg-lamps

Click under "LPG lamps" and look for "Flamineta" lanterns. They are a "direct bolt on" to a 5 gal. propane tank. These lanterns are popular amoung the remote ranches of Baja and they put out about 5 to 10 times more light than the "Coleman" crap we have to put up with here in the US. They are not restricted by our "nanny laws" in US that limit gas lantern output. I have both the 300 and 600 Bujias models at my small ranch. The 600 really throws the light.
I threw away that Coleman junk years ago. I have been using these lanterns at my ranch and in Baja for about 15 years now.

Where to buy them ?

Certain Mexican hardware stores carry them. Ask for "Lanternas de Flamineta". Some can also order them and those that carry them will also carry extra mantles and glass globes. I get my lantern supplies from a hardware store just north of the off ramp from toll road to free road in Tecate.

BTW...DEPSA sells other propane products for home/ranch use. These are also sold at the Mex hardware stores.

OLIGUACOMOLE - 8-25-2009 at 10:30 AM

Wow ....I want one with good power. Russ, do you know if they sell in Mulege or Santa Rosalia?

oldjack - 8-25-2009 at 10:41 AM

O.K. could one of you "technicians" tell me how long my 5 gal propane tank would last using the 16kg unit??? I am lousy at conversions.....

I want to use it on my patio in Los Barriles in lieu of electric lights

Russ - 8-25-2009 at 11:37 AM

I plugged it in and 14kg = 31 pounds. I have no idea what 5 gallon of propane weighs but it just doesn't seem very efficient. I think that there is a misprint there. I just got out one of those 16oz propane bottles and it says 465g=1.02 pounds. Or 28 of those little bottles an hour @ 14kg/hr???
OLIGUACOMOLE ,I remember seeing something like that in Santa Rosalia next to the bank and he owns the store in Mulége too. I think... that's what the squid fishermen use.
I sure hope my figures are wrong! I think I'll keep my ""Coleman" crap "

vandenberg - 8-25-2009 at 11:47 AM

Maybe they forgot the decimal point ??

0.14 could be the right amount, maybe ??

A 5 gallon tank holds 20 lbs if I'm not mistaken.
By burning 0.14 lbs an hour, that tank would be good for over 142 hrs. Makes sense.

ElFaro - 8-25-2009 at 11:58 AM

Forget their "specification" printout of consumption...just light it off and once it gets warmed up you adjust it down to get optimum gas/air mix for max brightness. There is a air mix adjuster on the pipe just above the gas valve. A 5 gal. bottle lasts me a couple of weeks easily.

ElFaro - 8-25-2009 at 12:32 PM

Your going to have better odds at finding the lanterns and related supplies in bigger towns that front large geographic areas where there would be alot of ranchers without electricity and thus the need. For example Tecate and San Quintin come to mind in the north. I say this because about 15 years ago I was staying at Rho. Santa Inez and we had dinner one night in the hall there and the lady lit one of these lanterns on our table. I asked her where she bought it and she told me "San Quintin". Now if El Rosario had them she would have told me but at the time El Rosario was probably not big enough. Even now San Quintin is still the last "big town" to get hardware supplies B4 heading south until you get to Guerreo Negro?

Keri - 8-26-2009 at 03:23 PM

Thanks El Faro and Russ. Got one yesterday in Rosarito. Thats what's I was looking for. Perfect. Now can anyone answer this . I thought I saw one with two heads. Is that possible? k

jbcoug - 8-26-2009 at 03:31 PM

Keri,

Would you mind sharing the cost of that unit?

John

ElFaro - 8-26-2009 at 03:46 PM

jbcoug...don't remember what I paid...$15-25 range ? I think.

Keri...don't remember ever seeing a 2-headed version. The 600 bujia model has a big mantle and throws the light of about 10 puny Colemans. I built an extension using 1/2" copper pipe and fittings to raise it 7 ft. off the ground. I also bought a 2.5 gal propane tank at HD for portability to use camping.

BTW...a 5 gal. tank burning that light every night 8 hrs. would last AT LEAST 2 weeks and more like 4 weeks...haven't tested that for awhile.

OLIGUACOMOLE - 8-26-2009 at 08:00 PM

Found em' in Mulege ferreteria's in Mulege. Si Hay!
Two styles....small lamp 290 pesos......big lamp 300 pesos! I bought a big one one. This does not include the propane tank. It is two feet in height.

Eugenio - 8-27-2009 at 01:03 PM

The 14 and 16 refer to hours per kg:

http://www.depsa.com.mx/clientes/lamparas-gaslp

They work well but be especially careful with connections if you're using it inside. Anyone who has lived in Mexico for any period of time probably knows of someone who has been blown up because of faulty gas connections - probably on their boiler.

Thanks everyone

Keri - 8-28-2009 at 08:50 AM

We got the big one. We paid 300 pesos. It came with 2 big mantles. Has anyone had any problem finding those big mantles? We are putting an extension on ours also Thanks again. k:yes:

Keri....Shop online. Everything is available.

ElFaro - 8-28-2009 at 12:07 PM

I would go to the Mex. hardware store I bought it from and ask them if they sell the replacement "capuchons" and "bombillas" para la lantera. I bought xtra mantles and globes because I shattered a globe one night in a wind storm. Another suggestion...get some Hi temperature spray paint (found at Auto Parts stores) and paint the underside of the lantern cap with the spring loaded tabs that hold the globe in place. I've found over time the tabs weaken and the cap metal separates due to heat exfoliation. The paint will slow down the process. Hope this helps...

Hook - 8-28-2009 at 12:14 PM

How adjustable are these, interms of lumens, ElFaro?

My biggest complaint with propane lights with mantles is how everyone runs them so high. We find that they are an eyesore if the mantle is in your line of sight. This is especially true in camping situations where it might be the only light visible. Shockingly white when on high.

ElFaro - 8-28-2009 at 12:39 PM

You can adjust them down to a low light and they become quiet. I have put alum. foil on one side to block "nuisance light" if needed.

You also may have to pull the valve and lightly "grease" the "O" ring in order to make smooth low light adjustments. Use silicon grease and very sparingly.

You also may wish to carry a small piece of high guage wire in case the orofice may need cleaning out although I haven't had to clean anything for a spell. It depends on how many "hours" you put on it.

One time I developed a "hot spot" on the globe glass and it softened that area of the glass a bit...didn't outright blast a hole through so I just rotated the glass...I think it was caused by a tear in the mantle that redirected part of the flame.

Important suggestion...I carry a crescent wrench to tighten the valve into the propane tank because the plastic valve knob provided tends to weaken over time from continued tightening and loosening. You can have problems with propane leakage if the valve is not tight into the propane valve.

Keri - 8-28-2009 at 01:44 PM

Found the mantels at the hardware store across the street from Los Gaviotas, He said they had the flaminetas also. Diana make sure to get the large one. If not there we bought ours at the big ferrateria at the north end of Rosarito next to the pemex.k.

estebanis - 8-28-2009 at 02:13 PM

Can one of you Punta Banda folks see if the have them at Flemante's? Or a Store on the South Side of Enchilada (Ensenada;D)?
Thanks,
Esteban

ElFaro, You're right. You can get any and all sorts of octopus rigs that connect to a propane bottle of any capacity. :bounce:

Keri - 8-28-2009 at 02:55 PM
