Jimena ~ Punta Chivato

Russ - 9-1-2009 at 03:57 PM

It's almost 5PM and I thought I show some before shots. And then try to add more as she arrives and passes. Providing I don't loose my satellite connection.

Russ, Thanks. Doesn't look too bad. It's gonna probably get a little worse. The storm has dropped down to about 120 MPH, not good, but better than 140 MPH. Good luck. Keep us posted.

Bajahowodd - 9-1-2009 at 04:11 PM

As the storm continues to weaken, here's hoping this turns out to be a non-event.

We sincerely hope that we will be repairing holes in our walls from where the plywood was put up and simply saying, gees, that was close.

Non-event would be a good thing.

Russ, those are really nice photos.

Thank you
Diane

Russ - 9-1-2009 at 05:58 PM

Nothing new to report at almost 7PM. ENE breeze at 5mph ~ 86º ~ 81% hum ~ baro steady at 29.82

Cochi - 9-1-2009 at 06:26 PM

Russ, thanx too for all your communication. Those pics are a lil soothing, but some "Need Soap" fishing pics would be more encouraging!

Paulina - 9-1-2009 at 08:25 PM

What is the story behind the house in photo number three?

Russ - 9-2-2009 at 02:27 AM

Paulina, The house on stilts? That's our old water tank for our Parcel, about 10 houses.

Wed~9/2

Russ - 9-2-2009 at 03:48 AM

Woken up around 2AM. Thunder Lightning, strong wind & heavy rain. Scrambled to close the doors and windows and got soaked.... of course. By the time I got the coffe on, mopped the floor and turned on the computer I thought my weather station took a lighting strike cuz there was no wind, thunder, lightning or rain. That storm cell was short lived. It's close to 5 now and the wind is 5 to 10mph Thunder & lightning just now amping up but the dog prefers it out side in the 77º coolness compared to 89º inside. Got the fan outside blowing in on me.

Joelt - 9-2-2009 at 08:49 AM

Thanks for the updates Russ. Can you see the mountains to west? Hope the rain is not bad enough to flood Mulege again. I suppose the road in to Chivato will be washed out soon. Hope you have enough beer to wait out the storm. In the 4th picture you posted last it looks like there is a sail or something in the water to the south. Maybe a kite boarder? Thanks again.

waht storm?

Russ, Good idea. A storm churns things up and brings in lots of fish from parts unknown. Awaiting the fishing report. Just be sure the storm has moved on.

I hope Russ is joking! :o

That thing looks like a floating cake of soap.

Cochi - 9-2-2009 at 12:21 PM

Great, we alll could use some humor!Actually, the water looks similar to the day of the dorado tournament.

shari - 9-2-2009 at 12:39 PM

russ...do you have that cutie pie tied up to your door??? just in case...i just talked to beth..brave gal....she's diggin it.

Russ - 9-2-2009 at 01:11 PM

Can't open a door or window cuz I'd never get'm closed again. Here's what my weather station said a few minutes ago. Didn't catch the big gust or heavy rain but I'm sure later I will. I added the 2nd temp gauge to show I'm not in a 92º box.

I just got up after the worst storm I've been thru. Including two seasons in Nam.
Things are bad here and as far as I know no one in Chivato was injured. I pray that is true for the rest of the path of destruction Jimena left behind. We have a lot of damaged homes here and will try to post as fast as I can see and figure out what's happened. We still have 25 t0 40 mph winds. Again no one injured that I know of.

Good news

Russ - 9-3-2009 at 11:23 AM

Just return from a depressing tour of part of shell beach. I'm working on a photo page with photos from several sources here on Shell Beach. I'll add the address for that site here as soon as I can. My prayers and thoughts are with all those effected by this storm.

capt. mike - 9-3-2009 at 02:27 PM

PLEASE think carefully before you come...right now you cannot get here, there is not enough food or water, you can do nothing for your places. plan on ten days or so if you MUST come. You could make things worse if you don't think it through

capt. mike - 9-3-2009 at 02:29 PM

Russ - can you report on status of Gene's place? he's next to the boat ramp.

Bajahowodd - 9-3-2009 at 03:47 PM

capt. mikes' words are wisdom. The army is there. Basic human needs will be taken care of. Those of us who have property there, or who wish to be involved in relief work need to to take a breath and give it a few days. That's not to say that planning should stop. Only that people should not be hitting the road right now.

Russ - 9-3-2009 at 06:06 PM

Here's my photo site... http://s232.photobucket.com/albums/ee23/Russinbaja/Jimana%20...
capt. mike , have not heard of damage to Gene's place. His neighbors had som damage I've heard on the radio.

Sharksbaja - 9-3-2009 at 07:05 PM

OMG! Hope has completely evaporated.

Glad you did ok Russ, thanks for taking the time to illustrate the damage.

David K - 9-3-2009 at 07:07 PM

Great photos Russ...

Russ - 9-3-2009 at 07:22 PM

capt. mike , A neighbor said his place looks like the same gypsy camp it always has.

Russ - 9-4-2009 at 10:00 AM

Can you believe this b-tch?! now heading West and we've got up to 30mph wind and RAIN! So all those waiting for reports from me.... well don't blame me.

Cypress - 9-4-2009 at 10:15 AM

Russ, That's one for the books!:o

shari - 9-4-2009 at 10:55 AM

oh my russ...nobody here believes it's coming back....hmmm...maybe we will get some rain after all? hang in there buddy..you will deserve a nice holiday after all is said and done.

Russ - 9-4-2009 at 11:21 AM

Totally conflicting scenarios. The track map shows the remnants moving west. The satellite image shows it moving south along the SOC coast line. What I know is it is raining and windy. Oh, and I'm plenty angry with the thing!
OOPS: forgot to shrink the pic....

Russ - 9-4-2009 at 02:52 PM

Just looked at the satellite & projected path updates. They still don't jive. Satellite shows the storm passing the southern end of Conception Bay now. Although we still have rain and wind. Projected path still showing it moving West North of us. When I think of it, the projected path after making landfall, has been wrong every time.

Russ - 9-4-2009 at 04:04 PM

Just over heard a conversation on the radio. Our gardener/handyman said the road to Santa Rosalia is difficult put doable. Same story to Mulége. He lives in Palo Verde and has family allover the area and they talk via 2meter radios. He will bring family and friends to help us dig out and make repairs when our road is passable. I still plan to make a photo trip after checking a bunch of houses when the weather clears. I know those with interests here are worried about their places and friends. Hang in there info maybe slow getting out but we've just been through a disaster and have our own concerns we'd like to work on too. Like water, power, roads and supporting each other in this frustrating time. We are probably in a bit of shock so might babble on a bit at times..... oops, am I babbling? Oh well, I'm talking to my dog more these days too.
Be patient everyone every thing here is repairable. Send some of your prayers and good thoughts to those in Mulége and elsewhere that are in real need. Russ ("The Babbler")

David K - 9-4-2009 at 04:42 PM

Hang in there Russ!

bajaviking: Photos need to be under 50 kbs to post on Nomad from your PC. Otherwise, load them onto a photo site such as photobucket.com (free) and pick a reduced size (15" monitor or Large) and link the image here.

Russ - 9-4-2009 at 07:51 PM

Thankx David. I've got a pretty good handle on resizing now. I re sized that photo as soon as I realized it didn't load so it was confusing.
Here's a question. The tracking modle shows there is still a storm heading West but again I don't see it on the satellite imaging. What's with that?

1???.jpg - 45kB

Paulina - 9-4-2009 at 08:16 PM

This is why I asked for a link on the other thread.

Russ - 9-5-2009 at 06:26 AM

Paulina ,Me too.
Just had a report that the military is here. So at least a hunvee can get in.

Not you Russ, your stuff is fine... I was telling 'bajaviking' because he had photos to share and tried twice.

Russ - 9-5-2009 at 07:21 AM

Just added 31 more pics. More after todays ride about.

dtbushpilot - 9-5-2009 at 09:00 AM

Thanks for the pics Russ. Wish I was there to help clean up. I'll be coming down with the BBP, already have a plane load of stuff waiting for them to tell me where to go. Hope I get to fly in to Punta Chivato to see you.

Hang in there Russ, give Mason a scratch for me.....dt

DENNIS - 9-5-2009 at 09:02 AM

Posted a list of needed items on the Hurricane Relief thread.

Hmmmm....

arrowhead - 9-5-2009 at 11:28 AM

With all that beach erosion in Punta Chivato, it looks like most of those homes are now in the Federal Zone. Yet another conundrum to be resolved.

DENNIS - 9-5-2009 at 11:38 AM

There's something about a StarBand antenna. How one could still be standing on a roof after all this mayhem makes me wonder.

Sorry for all the damage in your neighborhood, Russ. Thanks for the eye-opening fotos.

Russ - 9-5-2009 at 11:39 AM

On good authority the runway here should not be used for at least 3 days. No doubt someone will though.

Cypress - 9-5-2009 at 12:52 PM

Geez, Might be better to let the mud dry out before trucking or flying down to ground zero. The govt. troops are already there. They're gonna provide the basics. You might become part of the problem, rather than the solution unless you've got a pair of gloves and a shovel.

capt. mike - 9-5-2009 at 01:38 PM

Russ - thx for all the pics and report on palo verde's RW.
i sent it over to BBP.

how did Oxley's place fare?

Joelt - 9-5-2009 at 01:44 PM

Hey Capt. I think he was talking about Punta Chivato air strip not Palo Verde. Haven't heard anything about the Palo Verde runway. Has anyone heard anything about Palo Verde or San Bruno yet?

capt. mike - 9-5-2009 at 01:54 PM

well the report AS i read it referenced the military airport at Palo Verde/san bruno - i'll re check it. i hope i was wrong as that's very usable when clear - and the jets on the relief caravan have to have pavement.

man this is such a bad deal and soon the normally great fall WX starts, many people returning for their season and driving some economy.

Russ - 9-5-2009 at 01:58 PM

That was the Palo Verde airport not Pt. Chivato. The Pt. Chivato run way is very wet yet and I'm told needs 3 days to dry out.

Joelt - 9-6-2009 at 10:35 AM

Sorry! I missed something.

Russ - 9-6-2009 at 10:48 AM

Joelt, No, I did. I had posted on the other thread about the Palo Verde airport and got confused. But that isn't to unusual a state of mind .... for me.
Things are drying out here and all the usual workers are here now cleaning and removing rubbish.

capt. mike - 9-6-2009 at 10:49 AM

BBP now reports PCH Punta Chivato airport usable. soft edges. watch parking and 180 turns.

Russ - 9-6-2009 at 10:57 AM

Just got a new report too on the runway here in Punta Chicato.
"Just got back from doing the runway (Sunday 10:45 local) Really in good shape. I have it smooth however it is slightly soft in spots... not wet soft just loose sand soft. overall pretty good. again be cautious on the edges... North end run up pad in great shape.... south end not as good."
Edit: and this.
"Anyone flying into Punta Chivato airstrip should “buzz” or overfly first as there will be folks working on it on starting Sunday 9/6/2009. This will warn them to get out of the way. The airstrip should continue firming up as the sun & wind dry it out more."
