Make your own Tequila?

I came across this article about setting up a distillery and it sounds like it could be a fun hobby. :bounce:

Apparently it's not legal in the US, but could be in Mexico. Anybody tried it?

Nice article. The law in Mexico is similar to the US and the big boys don't like competition. Several varieties of shine exist in various parts of the republic. Caņa, caņabar, and aguardiente are all forms of white rum made from sugarcane. Just across from where I live, a bootleg "tequila" called Bacanora is made throughout Northern Sonora. It's made the same way, from a mash of the core of an agave plant. But, like Champagne, it's not from the Tequila area so... It's usually sold in used 2 liter soda bottles- make sure you don't have the cap too tight or fill a glass bottle all the way up and tighten the cap. I did that once and it burst overnight under the sink. Most drinkers don't bother with the salt and lemon routine. It's sometimes mixed with Squirt. I've even been approached while in line to cross.
