The last three paragraphs of this article in El Vigia say that an American was killed in La Salina by a bullet to the head yesterday. The motive is believed to be robbery. A spent shell was found in the area. The victim had not yet been identified.

Yes, its true, Larry Oliver was killed Friday evening in front of his home in La Salina. No one saw what we belive was a shooting but those who discovered him couldn't really tell but it appears so. A person was seen running from the scene and jumped a wall. His family has been notified. Larry is a long time part time resident of La Salina who moved here permanently about two months ago. Needless to say all of are shocked at what happened.

BornFisher - 9-13-2009 at 08:52 AM

OMG!! Unbelievable, and scary!
Prayers and condolences to the Oliver family.

Now that's close to home for us, less than a mile!!!! Anxious to hear more details....

bajario - 9-13-2009 at 09:14 AM

Just got an email from my Father and he had told me what LaSalinaGary had said. This happened in a little house next to our lot in the gated part north of the Cantina. Lots of speculation it sounds like, but no matter the reason a man has died needlessly. Prayers and condolences to the Oliver family.

SDRonni - 9-13-2009 at 09:18 AM

Our condolences to the family. Where is La Salina?

My heart goes out to the Oliver Family. For those in the area, please keep us posted as to what happened.

N2Baja - 9-13-2009 at 12:25 PM

Thank you all for posting information. This is very sad and tragic news. 'Grant' is my sister and when she called last night to tell me about Larry, I suggested she post here to see if anyone knew anything. She and Larry have known each other since high school.

I knew Larry growing up and, as the 'kid who always tagged along', I remember him as always being kind to me.

My heartfelt condolences to Larry's family and friends.

Grant - 9-13-2009 at 01:19 PM

Yes, thank you all who responded. I am waiting to hear from Larry's family with more details. This is a very sad time for us all.

DianaT - 9-13-2009 at 02:34 PM

So very sorry for the loss. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

Very tragic

Nice thought, Pancho. Perhaps, at this time, that should be up to the family.

Knew Larry for about 40 years

Baja Bernie - 9-14-2009 at 11:59 AM

He was a wonderful guy who would not hurt a flea... So sorry for his family.

Sad that he really didn't get to live his dream for very long.

S.D. man living in Baja may have been killed by robber
By Sandra Dibble
September 18, 2009

Baja California authorities believe robbery may have been the motive in last week's shooting death of a San Diego man who was building a house outside Ensenada.

Larry Oliver, 58, was killed Sept. 11th in La Salina, a beachfront community about 45 miles south of the border. A friend said Oliver was was a longtime resident of Clairemont who moved to Mexico full time two months ago.

Oliver died of a gunshot wound to the head, Lidia Gallegos Aguilar, the state's top prosecutor in Ensenada, said Friday.

“We suspect robbery, but at this point, we can't confirm it,” Gallegos said. Agents found a round from a 9mm weapon near Oliver's body, but it hasn't been determined if it came from the weapon used to kill him.

State agents were notified of the shooting about 10 p.m., Gallegos said. The prosecutor said Oliver traveled to San Diego earlier that day and withdrew $2,000 to pay construction workers. The cash has never been found.

Can anyone shed light on one of the posts listed on that site?
ie, the Palms?

"Thanks for this post it prompted me to call my parents who live on the beach south of Rosarito.
They didn't hear of it but told me of robberies @ gunpoint at the Palms restaurant and shootings last night in TJ Playas."

More than just an interrupted robbery. There was rage involved in his death. Larry had a new girlfriend. Most likely a crime of passion. The robbery was secondary.

Freespool - 9-23-2009 at 05:54 PM

What a tragedy. I am so very sorry...senseless

bajabass - 9-24-2009 at 11:33 AM

I heard of this last Saturday in the cantina. Very somber mood inside, unusual, till I heard the news. Very sad indeed. I hope they catch the person or persons responsible very soon. Things are really changing in the La Mision/La Salina area. I am there every weekend. I won't even let my wife go to Oscars or Maganas after dark. I need to buy a Baja Beater, before the shiny new Tundra or Element bring to much attention to us. I did not ever meet Larry, but several friends knew him well. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family and friends.

You can drop the page link into Google's translate.

It says a former employee of Larry knew when he paid payroll and decided to rob him on that day. Larry recognized the former employee, a Juan Carlos Villanueva Montengro, so Villanueva shot Larry in the head at point blank range. Villanueva had an accomplice in the crime, named Marco Antonio Bonilla Montiel. Bonilla was captured commiting another armed robbery and confessed to being involved in the murder of Larry and ratted out Villanueva, who kept all the loot from the robbery of Larry.

About electronic translators. I recently switched from Explorer to Firefox and installed a Firefox add on that does translations. It's real cool. Just highlight what you want to translate and a floating icon appears, click that, and the translation appears in a window right on the page your viewing. No more copying and pasting into a translator web site.

And Firefox has a built in spell checker when you're entering text into a textbox, like making a nomad post. The misspelled word is automatically red underlined, right click that and see a list of suggested corrections.

Sad to hear but glad they captured the suspected killers.
