BajaNomad

Met a Nomad at Ruben's Grill Sunday Brunch Today

Gypsy Jan - 9-13-2009 at 04:53 PM

I was standing at the omelet station, waiting for Oscar to finish cooking my pancake and egg.

A very nice man approached me and asked, "Do you post on Baja Nomad?' I answered, "Yes."

He then asked, "Are you Gypsy Jan, I think I recognize you from your stories about your dogs."

I said, "Guilty, as charged." Well, not really, but you get the idea.

Anyway, we chatted for several minutes about many things, including our mutual admiration for Julia Child--her books and TV shows.

I will not identify this Nomad without his permission, but our meeting today was a very, nice, a truly-only-in-Baja kind of moment, additionally enhanced by the good food, glorious weather and the great people who were enjoying themselves.

Bajahowodd - 9-13-2009 at 05:09 PM

Is he a fugitive?

SKIDS - 9-13-2009 at 05:20 PM

DENNIS - 9-13-2009 at 05:45 PM

Where you drinking?

Was it JR?

Hmm, Am I Visited by a Ghost?

Gypsy Jan - 9-13-2009 at 05:53 PM

Well, I don't think so, but I should check the candlesticks and the walls.

Does lighting incense help?

lizard lips - 9-13-2009 at 07:32 PM

Crusoe - 9-13-2009 at 08:14 PM

This is even getting more fun.......Older Nomads not even being able to tell what sex the opossite sex is supposed to be? ONLY IN ROSARITO!!! Are any Nomads here able to remember the old tv show HAZEL starring Dan Defore???? Julia Childs claimed one time that he taught her how to cook. ++C++:saint::saint:

Diver - 9-13-2009 at 08:17 PM

Hmmm.... Julia Child, Eh ?

Maybe the worldy renassaince man, BajaGringo ? :light:

Sallysouth - 9-13-2009 at 08:29 PM

Was it Bernie??

SteveD - 9-14-2009 at 08:48 AM

I hate to spoil the fun, but it was me. We have known Gypsy Jan and her husband for a few years through mutual friends. Her posts about Ruben's Grill narrowed down her location in Baja. When she mentioned her Lab's a light went off!!

As for Julia Child, I do like to cook and we talked about how Oscar makes omelets on a grill, the way Julia did it on her show by tossing the eggs and filling in a pan and the way I learned years ago.

ps. we will be at Ruben's Palms Grill Tuesday for a big Independance Day celebration!!!

SteveD

DENNIS - 9-14-2009 at 08:55 AM

Well, that wasn't as exciting as bumping into Gull or JR but, the mystery is solved. Thanks, Steve.

By the way, Julia may have shown HAZEL how to boil water but, she taught me the joys of never doing anything without a bottle of wine in my hand.
DEP Julia.

tripledigitken - 9-14-2009 at 09:25 AM

For you Julia fans I can wholeheartedly recommend the movie

Is there a secret nomad handshake? Bumper sticker? Lapel pin? Or are we recognized only by our civility in omelet station lines? :)

I refuse to put on a bumper sticker. It hurts when you pull them off.
I'll continue my search today. Went through Pabloff's the other day and didn't see your rig. Thought you had taken off.

Fred - 9-14-2009 at 01:44 PM

Dennis......I did leave. Be back in January. Gives you plenty of time to find it. See you at the lier's club after the new year.

The Gull - 9-14-2009 at 04:46 PM

It was me, Jan. El hombre de mil mascaras.

C'mon Gull. You have to use these ALT CODES. As it looks, you're telling us you use mascara.
Well, maybe you do.

Martyman... Yes.... Don Defore was Ozzie and Harriets nextdoor neighbor in that series for years. I just can't recall the name he went by. He was one of the best of the bests in the 50's and 60's. :saint::saint:

No. Never did. It didn't fall into my age slot.

Crusoe - 9-14-2009 at 06:55 PM

Your all right....It was Thorny.....De Fore had a very distinguished carrer dating back to the 30's. He played in many famous movies as well. He died in Los Angeles in 1993 at the age of 80. One of the best!!:P:P

Meeting the Nomads ...

David K - 9-15-2009 at 02:45 PM

Great people... and even the ones 'harsh' online tend to be friendly in person!

Nomad get-togethers don't happen a lot, but are great fun when they do. I have hosted my share; BajaCactus, Keri and 'M', too... For the off roading Nomads, there have been the Matomi Oasis trips and camping events hosted by Baja Warrior, BajaCat or myself. Ferna has done some good social work for the orphan kids in Tijuana during the Dia de Reyes observance... and the gang out on Punta Banda have done their share of activities!

There were Viva Baja and BBBB events before this Baja Nomad forum was statred (Aug. 2002), but here are some of the events I have photos of (since the start of this forum through 2004) if you would like to see 'the gang' who was there. I will insert one photo from each event's web page:

BBBB (Boojum Buddies Baja Bash) #4, Sept. 2002: http://www.vivabaja.com/bbbb4/
