The end of an era

arrowhead - 9-14-2009 at 07:54 PM

The home of the Cesar Salad, the restaurant on Avenida Revolucion in the Hotel Cesar, was evicted by the TJ police this morning. They could no longer pay the high rent. The police tossed their stuff onto the street.

Compassionate landlord.

Paulina - 9-14-2009 at 08:45 PM

At least the landlord didn't try to steal the business and the reputation that would have gone along with it. Hopefully they will relocate and be more sucessful with a lower overhead.

Bajaboy - 9-14-2009 at 09:33 PM

I'm guessing they weren't paying rent.....if you were the landlord what would you do?

Dennis-maybe you should have eaten there more often....I'm going to suggest it's your fault:biggrin:

Skipjack Joe - 9-14-2009 at 10:34 PM

... and I always thought Caesar's Salad went back to the Romans. :(:(

Barry A. - 9-14-2009 at 10:40 PM

My Mom used to take me there back in the mid and late 40's, and to this day I crave that wonderful salad.

TJ sure is not the same as then.

Barry, so right. We were poor, so my mom would go to T.J. To buy meat (a half side of the cow) . And we would run wild in TJ while she was waiting for the butchers to do their work, collecting the biggest firepower we could stuff down our O.P. shorts to roust the kids that had taken over our tree house. BUT, our mom always treated us to a nice meal after, which she insisted, must start with their World Famous Ceasar (Cesar) Salad. :(

Phil C - 9-15-2009 at 05:46 AM

The last time we ate there, six weeks ago, there was no electricty. We've been there many times over the years and always enjoyed the salad prepared at your table. We always sat outside to watch the goings-on on Revolution St. I for one, will miss the place.

Skeet/Loreto - 9-15-2009 at 07:12 AM

What a great place!!

Wonder what happened to the young man with no arms and legs that hung out in front??

Cesars brother was the one who owned and operated "Cesars" in Loreto for many years.

I would imagine time has passed by ol' Ceaser's resaurant and the rent has become unbearable. The economy couldn't have helped.. All we can do is guess.
Still seems a little harsh to be throwing the place out into the street. Maybe pack it up and put it in storage?

At any rate, I take full responsibility, of course. :)

That was a piñata. You were supposed to hit it with a stick to win a free salad. Don't tell me you gave it money....

DENNIS - 9-15-2009 at 08:25 AM

Oh my...Something just occured to me. Do you think..............Oh me Oh my.

Bajahowodd - 9-15-2009 at 11:26 AM

So much for the preservation of historic landmarks. My first visit was 1970. At least I can still say I ate where it all began.

Multi-tasking?

The Piñata was a big attraction if I remember correctly. It had some advanced [for the day] electronics embedded within and when you gave it a good whack with the stick, it would emit this loud "OUCH" kind of like those baby dolls would do, "MAMA", when thrown in the corner.
Boy, that got me into a Margarita mood. I miss those days.

Interesting. The anchovy component in the original came from the worcestershire sauce. Nowadays most high end places make the salad using actual anchovies or anchovy paste.

Barry A. - 9-16-2009 at 09:17 AM

...and now Sanborns on La Revu is gone

arrowhead - 9-16-2009 at 03:37 PM

Sanborns on Avenida Revolucion is now closed and packing up.

DENNIS - 9-16-2009 at 03:40 PM

Exodus in action.

Bajahowodd - 9-16-2009 at 04:13 PM

Seems that since Revolucion mainly catered to tourists, it was just a matter of time. Sad. But understandable. Just have to wonder if the old days will ever return. TJ, and Revolucion in particular, were icons in the Southern California culture.

I have the original recipe that was given to me by them in 1956. The table side building sequence is:
1. rub inside of wooden bowl with chopped garli clove
2. mash 2 - 3 whole anchovies in bottom with juice of 1/2 lemon
3. add a few good shakes of worchestershire, a little mustard and a few shakes of tabasco (secret ingrediant)
4. add whole egg and wisk while adding a little olive oil
5. tear and toss in 1 head of romaine to coat lightly
6. add parmesan cheese, toss again and then add croutons and serve:coolup::coolup::coolup:

Restaurant reputed to have invented Caesar salad, now closed

TIJUANA, Mexico — Caesar’s is dead. The Tijuana restaurant that popularized the Caesar salad has closed, an apparent victim of a tourism-dependent economy devastated by crime, drug violence and swine flu.

The slump in visitors from the U.S. also appeared to have claimed Restaurant Moderno, linked to the invention of nachos, in the town of Piedras Negras, across the Rio Grande from Eagle Pass.

Legend has it that both dishes were whipped up in a hurry to satisfy hungry U.S. visitors. Now they aren’t coming, scared off by drug cartel turf battles that often occur in Mexico’s border regions and by the spring’s flu outbreak.

Employees at Caesar’s said Friday that it shut down Monday after decades of serving Caesar salads. The restaurant has ties to the Tijuana spot where the dish is believed to have been invented in the 1920s but had moved to a new location long ago.

"I showed up for work on Monday and I found all the furniture outside," said Miguel Angel Ventura Oros, who worked as a waiter at the restaurant the last three years. "The manager told us there was an eviction for not paying the rent."

Martha Gonzalez, an employee of the Smart Price drugstore next door to Caesar’s, said the drop in tourism appears to have done in the restaurant, which toward the end was also a bar.

"They tried everything to revive it, but the tourism declined," Gonzalez said.

An employee of Restaurant Moderno confirmed that it closed this summer.

A waiter at Moderno, Ignacio Anaya, was credited with inventing nachos. The name came from Anaya’s nickname, Nacho.

It was always assumed but, that's the first explaination I've seen for the restaurant's demise.
