I'd buy it if it was closer...:D

Keri - 9-15-2009 at 05:37 PM

What is the monthly cost and how many computers can you put on it. I would like it for myself and 3 neighbors in San Quintin. Would this work for that,k

Howard - 9-15-2009 at 05:41 PM

What is the web site so I can see what the costs are? How portable is this? I was thinking of it for my RV, do you think it could work or is it to big and cumbersome?

I will be bringing the "Gringo Express" (my RV) down to Loreto the 3rd week in Ocotber and if can work for the RV and affordable service I could stop by then.

Just be sure you get authorized on the right satellite first. Many HughesNet satellites do not have signal that far south.

This is probably a 3/4 meter dish, which is not too heavy to stow and deploy. if you get a good portable tripod stand, an accurate satellite meter, and a little bit of aiming knowledge, you can move and set these up wherever you go.

Bcstech, Will this reach San Quintin Ok. Can I put 4 of us on this system. Can you install or is this too far for you.k

BCSTech - 9-16-2009 at 07:12 AM

Hi Keri,

Yes, the signal reaches San Quintin if you can get commissioned on the right satellite.

Four users on the system is a bit much but it depends upon whether one or more of you are "power users." No streaming audio or video, schedule automatic updates for the middle of the night, etc. More info here:

http://www.bajasatellite.com/hughesnet-satellite-internet-sy...

San Quintin is a bit far North for us unless one of my techs wants to ride the bus North and South for a few days.

Keri - 9-16-2009 at 07:22 AM

how do you "get commissioned on the right satellite." Understand the bus ride situation. maybe I can find someone in san q. Thanks for all your help with my questions all the time.k

I just rechecked the most current commissioning rules for HughesNet systems. You should be OK. Only one of the satellites currently used, H1, is a little wimpy in your area. You're a lot closer to the US so your options are much greater than we have here in the Los Cabos region. Don't worry about it, you should be fine.

Ok I knocked it down to 3 people. I understand I will need a router to get us all on the system. How much does a router cost and what kind and how big. None of us know any of this stuff so all help is appreciated. Thanks again,k

BCSTech - 9-16-2009 at 09:44 AM

Depends on where you buy the router. Anywhere from $50 to $150. Linksys and D-Link are decent consumer-grade routers. Netgear is a little better.

You can run up to 350' of LAN network cables from the router to each computer or you can try to connect wirelessly. But wireless can have lots of problems penetrating concrete and steel walls, trees, buildings, etc.

With some routers, you can attach an external antenna and cable outside to boost the range, perhaps another $50 to $150. Depending on the distance, each remote computer might also need an outdoor antenna at its end.

Keri - 9-16-2009 at 10:06 AM

The house where we would attach the satellite is around 500 ft from me, We chose there because he lives there full time and he has the most sophisticated solar and generator system ,the other 2 of us are part time. Is that too far away? Sounds like we would both need these extra antennas on each end. Is that correct? Is this workable or am I trying to do too much with this system. I'm probably the most knowledgeable about this stuff and you can see how much that is. SCARY isn't it.,k

BCSTech - 9-16-2009 at 10:26 AM

No telling until you try it. 500' is a pretty far but it depends on where the gear is located. Think line of sight. If the router is near a window where you can see it from your remote computer location, it might work without the additional outside antennas.

Do you have to be a certified installer like starband. Can you do it online. Has anybody done a hughes net system. Do you have the coordinates I need to install or do you know where I can get them. Does anyone know a hughes net installer here in bajanorte? k

BCSTech - 9-16-2009 at 11:24 AM

Hi Keri,

If you can find someone there to install the gear, I can help you remotely. Please check your U2Us.

Keri, we used Frontera out of San Diego for our Hughes system, they also have an installer in Ensenada.
