New border-crossing law

arrowhead - 9-16-2009 at 07:25 AM

They are implementing a new law at the border starting this week. It is now illegal to be talking on a cellular phone or radio upon entering Mexico from the US. The fine is up to 9,000 pesos (about $700). It is part of Mexico's new border initiative to stop the flow of arms and money.

If you read Spanish, here is the article:

This is ment to prevent point men from giving status reports to the mules who are waiting to cross ...

Actually, it's ridiculous. How would they know who's talking on a hands-free device?

woody with a view - 9-16-2009 at 04:25 PM

maybe your lips were moving and you're by yourself.....

laws will be rigorously enterpreted on a case by case basis....

k-rico - 9-16-2009 at 04:36 PM

It could be a camera concern. Or are they hands free too?

Could be if it was important enough to somebody.

The Gull - 9-16-2009 at 04:52 PM

I will be telling all my drug-taking aquaintenances in the US to load up, as this will drop the importation of drugs to near zero.

It might be important to the cops working the border. It can be a dangerous job.

redhilltown - 9-16-2009 at 11:27 PM

What exactly are the laws about cell phone use and driving in Mexico? I thought it was illegal but maybe similar to California's (totally ignored) laws of not using hand held devices? To me the beauty of entering Baja is turning the damn thing off.

duke62 - 9-17-2009 at 12:53 AM

Last time we crossed going North (in the SENTRI lane), our ticket booth person (I have to come up with a better name for them) got all agitated about the fact my wife was, at that time, calling our son in the states to let him know we were back (So he would have time to clean up the party he most likely had at our house). He (Disneyland ticket puncher) wanted to confiscate her phone to make sure we had not taken pictures of him that might end up on the internet.

dianaji - 9-17-2009 at 07:05 AM

a good idea!!!

lizard lips - 9-17-2009 at 07:20 AM

You may also be concerned that when you enter (three cars behind) the US border station they have sensitive listening devises that can hear conversations you have in your car. I have a friend who works the border.

David K - 9-17-2009 at 08:18 AM

Wow, are those devices going to be pointed at our homes, next? '1984' arrives in 2009!

bajalou - 9-17-2009 at 08:26 AM

Several years ago - about 6 - I was told by border agents that talking on a phone in the border zone (from where you cross into the US to the point you leave the facility was forbidden. This is nothing new heading northbound.

k-rico - 9-17-2009 at 08:56 AM

I'm concerned about the drive thru x-ray machines the US is using upon entry to secondary inspection. Specifically, I'm wondering what the absorbed dose is to the driver.

There is no threshold dose of ionizing radiation below which it is harmless. The probability of damage just gets smaller.

Border guard to driver - "Just drive through that machine, it probably won't hurt you."

Oh please. Mexican drivers have just figured out how to hold the phone with one hand and sort-of drive with the other. Hands-free is still a decade away.

Put down your cell phone, turn down the radio and wind down all your windows for the 30 seconds you are in the inspection area.

I took a video of the "ticket booth" guy once in a sweeping panoramic manner and he made me delete them as he watched. I still posted it on YouTube though.

Ticket Booth takers

bombero - 9-17-2009 at 06:23 PM

For those of you that have such little respect for the "ticket takers", perhaps if you had not been kicked out of the Boy Scouts, refused a job as a security officer for your local shopping mall, had grown to 6ft or taller, not been able to get a prom date, not been given a speeding ticket when everyone else was doing it too, was passed over for promotion by a less qualified person, was never the "employee of the year", get over it! Keep the info coming but leave out the personal small talk coments.thank you, Carl

DITTO. I may be a "Newbie" here, but any similarity ends there.

I'm disgusted with the Trolls... no more feeding the reprobates... let them starve.

I understand there is a pohotograph circulating the internet in which Dennis as a child has a pork chop tied to his neck in order to get the family dog to play with him.
Yes readers even as a child Dennis was an ugly little troll. Now he just the only solo drag queen in Punta Banda. it's a lonely and ugly exietance for such a troll-:O

Man, Those are some awful camel stained teeth he has.

The Gull - 9-18-2009 at 02:31 PM

Mexicorn,

Your stuff is weak. Our friend Mennis will defend himself and you will be left sobbing.

Keep up the good work. You are escalating and could be the next Nutmad that gets banned. Not many on that list. That club is more exlcusive that the one you are trying to impress, right now.

Hold on a minute Mr. Gull cant we talk about this over a beer at Rubens or Cantiles?
I'll bet you already know who I am?
As a matter of fact if you saw my face you'd know exactely who I am. Mr. Gull dont pledge your alligence to that redneck Mennis who only thinks Mexican are only good for prostitution and cleaning his filthy little troll cave. C'mon Gull I had a higher opinion of you than that. Oh P.S. I stopped in at La Salina Cantina last night and that Story about Larry Oliver is true he was shot in front of his home. Does anyone know if Larry frequented the La Salina Cantina? I've got a feeling there is a nexus with it but havent put my finger on it yet.
On second thought maybe I should leave it alone and leave it up to those crack investigators at PFP. What do you say Mennis should I just leave it alone and go back to cleaning the crappers ar Rosarito PD or do we owe it to the Oliver family to find out the truth. So go ahead and ban me from the board as far as I can tell I'm the only one he with even a remote LE background even if it is just like Mennis says it is.

Who's "we", errand boy. Are you and one-bullet Barney Fife going to show the local cops how the big boys do it? They'll really appreciate that. Maybe, just for you, they'll start throwing the loaded toilet paper in the bowl instead of on the floor.

Now...you stay in touch with the La Salina winos so you can get all the news verified. We unfortunates are stuck with nothing better than the news to keep us informed.

Why don't you go back to the states and get a job if this control thing is still nagging at you. I'll bet you still sleep in your uniform just like you did for a full tax-payer supported career.
