BOLA report for 9-11 thru 9-14

Santiago - 9-17-2009 at 08:49 AM

Fished 4 days out of Gecko. Caught dorado in 3 locations: Punta Malo near Don Juan Cove, Isla Estanque on the southeast point of la Guarda, the just submerged rocks between Horsehead and Ventana and of all places, just east of Borrego. The dorado near Borrego were very small, less than 12"! I've never seen one so small. Yellowtail were in all the usual spots. Lots of sierra but very few barracuda or bonita/skipjacks, not that we were complaining.
The weather was in the high 90s with 50% humidity when we got there but was noticeably cooler and less humid when we left. Last 2 nights didn't even need fans. Even fog in the mountains on Tuesday's drive back, just east of town. Maybe the seasons are changing.
Crossed at San Yisidro on Tuesday at 5:30pm - took only about 20 minutes - didn't even have to go to secondary with the boat.

Thanks for the report Santiago. Did you ever find Macrino? How was the ride out to La Guarda?

Santiago - 9-17-2009 at 09:08 AM

The ride to the south end of la Guarda was easy, but the southeast corner was a b*tch. Potato Patch City. Watch for 4baja's report on BloodyDecks in the next few days - he's arriving today, I think.

Posted on BloodyDecks; "will post from down there from time to time if storm did any damage. allso on the fishing."

That should be interesting as Bahia was reported to have no effects from the storm at all. Insider scoop maybe?

By the way, where is Borrego?

Borrego is the isla just north of Ventana (at least on my map). There was a good boil happening in the late morning just east of there near where the real low islet is (I don't think it has a name). Sierra, firecracker yellowtails, and at least one teeny dorado.
Insider stuff: Macrino is indeed in town and busily working on Marty's pila. He gave me a hot tip on where to buy ice.

Thanks Jim, I learned something new this evening! I'm curious to look at my map more closely now.

Island just north of La Ventana is probably Isla Bota, just east of that is the low rocky island called isla Aremar - I've really never heard of isla Borrego - Check the Baja Catch for great maps with island and point names

Oh - I was using the old Baja Almanac, Norte.

Looks like Isla el Borrego in the Almanac is Isla Flecha in The Baja Cactch...
