UPDATE: Problems with Mirror Lures

Santiago - 9-17-2009 at 08:53 AM

While fishing in Asuncion last week, Juan showed me a mirror lure with no hooks. He says he is having problems with the hooks either being pulled out or coming unscrewed while being trolled. I was shocked at how small the screw eyes were that go into the body. Anyone else having this problem? You think we could epoxy the screws in? This is too bad as the purple is just slamming the yellowtail this year.

Just to clarify - I trolled my pink one with no problems - don't know if he's run into a bad batch or if this is general problem.

Well if the package mentioned "Made in China" you found the problem.

(hint: red Locktite)

Santiago, Thanks! Soft wood? Short screws? Better yet, big fish hitting and hooked on the sweet spot. Ripping and running!:bounce:

The older Mirrolures large were "wired through" from the nose to the tail hook like Rapalas and others..
The new ones have the hook mounts heat-welded into place.
They're building them like freshwater lures; No bueno !!

I once had an evening of fishing for tarpon after which there was nothing left of the rapala save the nose ring, wire, and the treble hooks. The body was gone!!

What a memory. :bounce:

Problems with Mirror Lures: They reflect your "pink one" as it goes over the side? :O:wow:

OOOOOO.....I'm gonna get you for that one:lol::lol::lol:

Pescador - 9-18-2009 at 03:46 PM

Since they replaced the old wire through connections with the new screw in hook hangers, the lures are a real challenge for anything bigger than 15 lbs. I threw my new ones away and now use the Yo-Zuri Magnum which is much stronger if I ever get an urge to troll (which happens only when I have newbies on the boat) Live bait is so much more effective and the fish gets a chance to fight like he should instead of getting dragged through the water and wears himself out before you start to reel him in.

i just epoxy'd 3 of mine and still have 2 older wire thru's. will experiment on the tuna in about 5 weeks. halloween should be fun, prayforsurf and tuna.....:light:

Update: I finally got around to calling the manufacturer today on the missing hooks from the Mirrorlure 111. I explained the issue to the receptionist expecting to be sent to someone else but she simply asked my name and address and said she had a box of them on her desk to send to any customer who called about missing hooks/screw-eyes on their trolling lures. "Just screw them in and you'll be good to go" uh-huh. Right.

I have a large fishing tackle box of Rapalas and Mirrolures that I never use anymore.

The Yo-Zuris are just so much superior and I've never had to "tune" the bills. I've had Mirros and Raps that defy tuning.

Skipjack Joe - 12-14-2009 at 01:36 PM

These are better than Rapalas?

They're not cheap ($10 at cabelas). Mirrorlures are more, I think.

Pretty sure the ones I use are these:

I have a green mack and a blue mack.

The only rapalas I still use are my small CD-9 and 11s and that's because they are....................................purple, of course.

You havent seen expensive till you see Yo-Zuri prices, SJ.

I use these a lot, in the sardine color:

Crystal Minnow Deep Diver

I think I paid about 9 bucks for them. I'm down to my last two, I think.
