Fri. 9/18/09 Chubasco in Chivato

Russ - 9-18-2009 at 09:04 AM

Very interesting morning here in Punta Chivato. I got up at 5 AM to a really spectacular light show. Tried to get a photo of a flash but even taking nearly 40 pics I missed a good shot. Then as the sun started to rise cloud was doing all kinds of nice changes. It was 80º calm winds and the water was oil slick. We watched the clouds move in. Around 8 we watched a squall line move in and everyone headed home to batten down their homes. So for the next 45 minutes we had 35 mph ESE winds gusting to 45 mph. Of course some of the roofing that hasn’t been picked up took flight once again. And it’s raining lightly too. 9 AM and the sky is lightening up a bit and I have internet again. Now almost 9:30 and I'm waiting on photo bucket to upload. Winds still around 30mph almost blue skies again. 83º ~ 87% hum.
Only attempt to get lightning I saved. You can just see the flash.

A few minutes later and a wider shot of the cloud

After sunrise and the storm has moved in over us

Looking South.. Clouds over Mulege

Just as the wind hit and we all scrambled to button up our homes.... again
I spent the next 45 minutes inside out of the rain and wind.

After most of the rain stopped you can see the surf's up

Skies are clearing

Behind my house.

Looking SW

Overhead

Almost 10

All done:)

You haven't been wanting for excitement lately, have you, Russ. Your life in the wilds down there makes mine seem pretty dull.
Hang in there, buddy.

Nice shots Russ.....Hard to out guess those strong squals. Usually the Frigate Birds know. Usually it plays out if there are no birds of any kind, you can expect a harder blow! Good luck with the roofs. ++C++

Russ, Thanks for the pictures. Waiting for a fishing report.:)

elgatoloco - 9-18-2009 at 10:33 AM

Cool photos!

Mexicorn - 9-18-2009 at 11:31 AM

Thanks Russ. Thanks for the update it's the season I thought they were called "Chubascos"?:?:

Russ - 9-18-2009 at 11:35 AM

You're correct, Mexicorn. I asked a friend but for got to make the correction.

wessongroup - 9-18-2009 at 12:01 PM

Outstanding shots... hope the bugs have slowed down... that's one thing that really gets me, lots of bugs

:):)

Robertofox - 9-18-2009 at 12:33 PM

Morning Russ,
Thanks for reminding me of what I am missing in PC. I was suppose to be there in Oct but now I can't make it till Nov. I sold my house (21 yrs) so I'm in the process of moving and my exit date is Oct 1.....damn.....Keep the pic's coming. I found out from Pedro that I only lost one small piece of roof panel on my house. Hopefully, Reyes was able to replace it this week. Take care amigo......bob

Joelt - 9-18-2009 at 01:36 PM

Thanks for the pics Russ. Always enjoy your posts. How are the bugs by the way?

Russ - 9-18-2009 at 01:48 PM

Bob, Reyes had coffee here this morning and mentioned he was working on your roof. Probably didn't get too far cuz the wind hasn't dropped much below 15 mph all day and is hanging around 20. In this breeze lamina and bugs blow away.

shari - 9-18-2009 at 03:17 PM

whats happening there this afternoon russ....we can see some outrageous clouds over your way....

Russ - 9-18-2009 at 04:18 PM

This has turned out to be one exceptionally weird day! 1st the chubasco and the wind never got back into a normal pattern then we had some scattered clouds an wind in the high teens to mid 20's. Now it appears Marty has weakened and is heading towards us. The forecast tracks and models I look at show Marty going either NW or W but the satellite loop shows a totally different reality. We're getting thunder now and it's cloudy.

"THE TRACKFORECAST PHILOSOPHY REMAINS UNCHANGED. MARTY WILL TURN TOWARD THEWEST-NORTHWEST AND EVENTUALLY TOWARD THE WEST PRIOR TO DISSIPATIONAS IT FEELS THE INFLUENCE OF THE LOW-LEVEL RIDGE TO ITS NORTH."

The clouds are really dark over Mulege now. It appears to be raining in the mountains. Now lots of lightening and thunder

Here what the Sat showed awhile ago. Those clouds are moving towards us. I haven't gotten the imaging to work for an hour. I think I'll loose internet soon too if the clouds thicken up much more. later...

Mulege is still cloudy but to the West it seems to be clearing some. Wind has changed from E to SE and dropped to around 5 to 10 mph. It is much cooler and feels great.
This pic is of the mountains behind Mulege:

Wind now SSE
Sorry, I mess that up. The photo is of the skyline behind Mulege the "mountains" are the hills behind Punta Chivato.

All the panic I went through yesterday was a bunch of $$$t. I apologize to any one I cause undue worry. I'll try to be less excitable in the future. I think I must have lost all confidence in those projected path forecasts after Jimena.

Hey don't sweat the small s**t, what you and all others went though would tend to make anyone somewhat "excitable" if they have normal reactions to Mother Nature flexing her muscles in the form of a Tropical Storm.

Had never realized how may Tropical Storms hit the Baja down your way in a season..

Hope your getting back into your routine, and once again thanks for the pictures, good to have someone out on point..

Off topoic, what kind of camera do you use... your pictures come out really nice..

Does that include El Patron?

Russ - 9-19-2009 at 10:33 AM

Cochi , Mike & Linda will be here for about 3 weeks.

Bob and Susan - 9-19-2009 at 02:12 PM

Does that include El Patron?

don't know
haven't been that way yet

Russ - 9-19-2009 at 02:49 PM

wessongroup, I haven't a clue how others capture lighting. Maybe time exposure and a trypod?
Here's one thread on cameras with post from folks a lot more proficient than I am. I just snap & shoot. Some posting here have real professional skills.

dk....el patron, for the most part, was washed away...but there's an "upside"...talked with tim tonight...seems the kitchen survived everything for the most part but the "dining room" needed to be replaced...so...tim said they would be opened next week for business...not hard building a dining room on the sand...we love the ambiance there..the sunsets..the silence..they'll be back..soon.
