Halloween, Guadalupe Canyon 2008

David K - 9-22-2009 at 07:55 AM

Last Halloween was our final trip to Arturo's Campo #1 at Guadalupe Canyon... I fear it is all over after so many great trips there because of the hostility of Arturo's brother (who runs the camp on the other side of the canyon) in cutting off the water to Arturo's camp... as well as failing health and old age.

We joined Hotschott and Val for dinner on Halloween last year...

As far as i know Arturo is doing better, and the water is back in Arturos side..I will take some halloween decorations and some pumkins...great idea DK

Good news... please report back after your trip!

Which camp site do you like in there? We like La Jolla B and Hotschott likes La Paloma.

BAJACAT - 9-23-2009 at 09:20 PM

I always get San Marcos and sometimes El Sol, I like San marcos better, it has it's own toilet last of privacy and lost of parking, this is the most expensive of all the camps..

Sure is good to hear that Arturo's is open!!! :light:

BAJACAT - 9-28-2009 at 10:02 AM

Well David hold your thoughts on this one, I was trying to reserve my spot in the canyon and I got this e-mail from Rob.
"Thank you for writing, Campground is closed.
No longer making reserations. Problems
with family, bad roads, wild fires, crime have
forced us to shut down all operations".

David K - 9-28-2009 at 01:04 PM

Well... that is it then... TOO SAD/ TOO BAD! Maybe Rob should take down or edit the web site to reflect this?

David K - 9-28-2009 at 01:07 PM

You could just drive in there and see if Arturo has something...? If not, stay at one of Ernesto's sites (Ernesto is Arturo's brother who holds title to the entire canyon and has the less than private campsites across and above Arturo's...

HERE IS ERNESTO's WEB SITE (for reservations, etc.): http://www.guadalupecanyon.com/gc/

[Edited on 9-28-2009 by David K]

BAJACAT - 9-28-2009 at 08:34 PM

Thats what I will do david, Im thinking that the camps don't have water, maybe thtas the reason why,Bad roads, thats a never ending problem we know that thats not a problem, i don't know what he means by crime. I toll him allready about leting people know about the problem, the website still up..I send a e-mail to Ernesto to se what the situation is on his camps...
I was thinking in a quick trip to the canyon just to see in person what is true and whats not.

BAJACAT - 9-28-2009 at 08:45 PM

I just got a responce to my e-mail, Ernesto whats $500 for 5 cars for two nights ,Im going to have to think this one up...
On top of this they do not take walk in's you have to reserve in advance...

[Edited on 9-29-2009 by BAJACAT]

David K - 9-29-2009 at 08:22 AM

Sounds like they aren't too eager to have a thriving business... Can all of you fit into fewer cars if the rate is $50: night: car?

I think an exploration back to Agua Caliente Canyon (Valle Chico) is in order to see if they were able to develop something there!

The volume of super hot water is huge... the problem is the spring is only a few feet higher than the canyon floor, so no way to gravity feed it to camp sites without a pump.... and if the sites are too far down the canyon for gravity, then the water will lose too much heat...

BAJACAT - 9-29-2009 at 08:15 PM

David only 4 people are allowed per car, any extra people is $10 each and they do not accept walk-ins, you must reserve ahead of time.... Im still going but Im going to pay the high price..

[Edited on 9-30-2009 by BAJACAT]

David K - 9-30-2009 at 08:25 AM

Wow... okay... wow... $500 to camp for 2 nights... in the same spot? How about renting several campsites (next to each other) so you get more hot tubs to use.. for the same money?

If you can, walk or drive over to Arturo's side of the canyon and check out the conditions... See if Arturo is there... and report back for us!

Have fun!

BAJACAT - 9-30-2009 at 07:27 PM

ok I will

BAJACAT - 10-16-2009 at 07:50 PM

UPDATE, Guadalupe canyon is open again, but i was told for dry camping only no water yet, so i don't know what to do, If i want water i got to go to Guadalupe oasis, next to Arturos. o r stay with Arturo with no water... also Ernesto just posted on his website the new lower prices for his side of the canyon.

[Edited on 10-17-2009 by BAJACAT]

David K - 10-16-2009 at 09:25 PM

It is a beautiful canyon with pretty hiking to the pools and waterfalls above... But, a hot tub is a great attraction to have at a camp there... if you are going to pay big bucks... I did just now look at Ernesto's price list, and I don't see much change...? Is $90/ night/ car (2 night min.) really the best he can do for his side of the canyon?

I am sure you will make a fun trip out of it... Is Palomar Canyon out of the question for the cars that are in your group?

BAJACAT - 10-18-2009 at 07:24 PM

Palomar it;s another 30 miles from GDC, At this point Im leaning into just go there check Arturo firts and see whats going on and depending on this i will see my options, for me I don;t care, but for the new people I would like to have the water, so they can live the whole experince...

BAJACAT - 10-26-2009 at 09:01 PM

Trip is cancel, will wait for what ever developes, with Arturos water aplication to CON AGUA, maybe by next month they will have water again, with permits on hand. The prize and set up of the other side of the canyon, did'nt do it for me. I have been going to GLC since 1985 and I have always stay on Arturos side, and im not about to change now, untill the next one nomads, or should I say David K, since you are the only one that reply to my thread.....

David K - 10-27-2009 at 08:14 AM

I am sorry you aren't going to to be going, Jose! It is a beautiful area even without the hot water... There are other places in Baja to go camping... Just not any quite like Guadalupe Canyon.

I got an email from Ernesto's son this morning (who reads Nomad) and said to check the new lower rates now on their web site...

My first thought would be to drive your family to Puertecitos and play in the hot water tubs there, but it isn't nearly as nice as el Caņon de Guadalupe, Jose. What a bummer...

BAJACAT - 10-28-2009 at 07:43 PM

NO WORRYS guys,Baja will be there waiting for me it always has..

like I said before i will wait for Arturo's side... thanks DK for your help..

Mulegena - 11-1-2009 at 10:16 AM

Camped with Arturo and his family on my second trip to Baja years ago. Didn't care if we ever left Campo La Cueva, but we eventually moved on to enjoy the rest of Baja.

Met Grandpa, Ernesto and Arturo's father, who had been born and raised there by his Spanish cowboy father and Mexican-Indian grandmother.

The old man was 95 years old and bright as could be. However, I didn't like how he had divided the ownership of the camp between his sons, and time has proven me correct.

So sorry there's bad blood between the brothers. It hurts them and is a huge deterrent from my ever visiting and enjoying that bit of Heaven on Earth.

David K - 11-1-2009 at 05:56 PM

Nice story Mulegeņa... I heard about those old days at Guadalupe from Hotschott as well... Too bad the good times can't just stand still and all of us stop aging, too!

The serious development into the beautiful camp sites with their private hot tubs is thanks to Arturo's American son-in-law 'Canyonman Rob' and so many others (like Hotschott) who spent their time working on the palapas and tubs and plumbing to get the spring water to all the sites.

None of the other family members cared (it seemed) until they saw the success that Arturo was having with eco-friendly/ high end campers who enjoyed the experience under the stars without noise and didn't mind the price for such an amazing weekend experience.

I once camped at Angel's Campo #3 (just above Arturo's) when Arturo's (Campo #1) was full... and it was no fun with people all around you, and no real privacy in your tub... and still big bucks...

I don't see Ernesto's sites across the canyon being much better than Angel's. (Angel is no longer there and was only operating Campo #3 for Ernesto).

Some day there may be a new Campo #1 in operation... if they 'get-it', it will be nice.

Bajacat, I've never been to Guadalupe Canyon, but the pictures are beautiful!

I always enjoy reading about your travels down here, and your love for Baja always shines through.

I hope you had a good Halloween, however it turned out!

Thanks Paula I spend my Halloween taking my kids to collect candy here in National City SD.
And that's it David it's all about privacy, Arturo's side is all about that.
