Real Name or Not

24baja - 9-22-2009 at 01:40 PM

I consider it a CB handle for Cyberspace....kinda aging myself huh! This is my real name....Connie:tumble:

Bajahowodd - 9-22-2009 at 01:42 PM

I can tell by the current vote tally that a few folks we know haven't voted yet.:P

They didn't give an appropriate response for me.

Keri - 9-22-2009 at 01:55 PM

I use my real name on this forum but I don't think everyone has to. I think it is up to the individual.I do think you should use the name they use on the forum. They may not wish their real name out there in cyberspace. I got called on it once. I didn't mean to do harm. I just had never thought of it. I do now. I respect others privacy.k:yes:

Bajahowodd - 9-22-2009 at 02:14 PM

I do suppose that identity theft gets a minor assist when people use their full names online. But using one's real first name? Folks are entitled to their opinions, but I fail to see what harm can be done by using one's real first name. There was another thread here where people explained what their "handles" meant. In fact, since that thread, I'm still negotiating with Howard for the rights. Trivia- Woody Allen once played a character in a movie that was my full name.

DENNIS - 9-22-2009 at 02:16 PM

I can't contribute. I use my real name but, I don't feel anyone should unless they want to.

Just read Keri's response and I agree.

Oso - 9-22-2009 at 02:17 PM

Hey, it's the INTERNET! I'm not too upset when people I know respond to a post using my first name, but I don't like having my full identity on the net for a number of reasons, identity theft first among them. I've had to disappoint nieces who wanted me to "friend" them on Facebook or MySpace. If others want to post their names, addresses, social security numbers etc. for the benefit of Nigerians, that's their business. Me? Uh uh.

jimgrms - 9-22-2009 at 02:19 PM

i don't use mine because of the reward that's been offered lol

vandenberg - 9-22-2009 at 02:23 PM

Little paranoia goes a long way.:biggrin:

k-rico - 9-22-2009 at 02:28 PM

If I used my real name I could only log in as one person, what fun is that?

Seriously, there is one Nomad who seems to go out of his way to use people's real names on this board eventhough they log in with an alias. If I ever meet him I'll have to give him an alias.

What Is a REAL Name?

Gypsy Jan - 9-22-2009 at 02:49 PM

The one that is chosen for you or the one you chose for yourself?

Cypress - 9-22-2009 at 02:55 PM

Oso said it. It' the internet! One of those world-wide party lines. ID theft, Spam, etc. on and on with things going on we don't even dream of. Paranoid? Call it what you want. Guess everybody with door locks are paranoid.

IRS ID

Gypsy Jan - 9-22-2009 at 03:10 PM

When the U.S. Government started issuing Social Security numbers, my late and much missed mother-in-law signed up for at least four and maybe more.

She just wanted to be able to lie about her age credibly so she could keep on dating younger men.

Ken Bondy - 9-22-2009 at 03:41 PM

Diane I use my real name but I don't care if others do or do not use their real names. In many cases I think the handles are kinda fun.

24baja - 9-22-2009 at 04:14 PM

Keri and Ken make good points, as do all the rest of you, but it is up to the individual. If I respond to someone I use their handle unless otherwise instructed. This is a very interesting topic.

I used to have a photo of us up but my husband wanted me to take it off, so now we have the sunrise at BOLA as the avitar. How do you feel about posting photos of yourself as Avitar?

Bajahowodd - 9-22-2009 at 04:54 PM

It's a comfort factor thing. While I don't want to hijack this thread, I really do believe that since 9/11, and the prior administration's opportunism, Americans live their everyday lives in a greater level of fear than before.

Edited for clarification- I'm not trying to politicize this, but rather it's a cultural phenomenon.

I post under the name of Neal Johns but my real name is Dixie, and I really, really, like girls. I am white and have blue eyes.

If you want to be "Diver", I will bow and become "Diver Too" !
Your pictures have earned you any name you want !!

BajaNuts - 9-22-2009 at 08:29 PM

Some folks on this forum have businesses and websites linked in their posts with their real names and contact info right there. I don't see a problem using their real names on occasion.

I like my "handle", it's kinda fun, but I have on occasion used my first name when signing a post.

I have not posted my first and last name together in the public forum. I have send u2u's with my full name and address to several members. I would be very upset if someone used my full name, let alone posted my address on the open forum. I feel that info shared in u2u's are PRIVATE info, not to be shared.

I wouldn't knowingly use a person's full name unless I knew for sure it was already out there. I may at some point slip up and use a person's first name instead of their handle, but I don't think that poses too much of a risk....other than the risk of ticking someone off......... ;D

Interesting topic, I hope it brings some awareness to folks about not using full names, etc, unless you know for sure it's OK or that the info is already out there.

bajaguy - 9-22-2009 at 08:32 PM

My avitar is a photo of me and Libbie AKA "Flan Breath"

Paulina - 9-22-2009 at 08:39 PM

The option I would have chosen wasn't offered;

I use my real name and don't care if other people do or not.

P<*)))>{

On edit:
Ok, after reading all the replies, I agree with Keri and Ken. I will also be more careful not to use real names when replying to someone who has chosen to use a screen name.
Sorry 'bout that.

Udo - 9-22-2009 at 08:48 PM

I have no problemos posting our foto as an avatar...hell, it makes it easier to get identified when we go to Nomad g-e-t-t-o-g-e-t-h-e-r-s. We don't have to wear no stinkin name tags!
BTW...I also feel that Keri & Ken make good points.

It's a personal anonymity thing if a Nomad doesn't want to show their face or real name!

arrowhead - 9-22-2009 at 09:16 PM

For those who want to use their personal name or other personal information on the internet, consider this:

Suppose somebody using their real name posts an innocuous little statement, like "Really having a good time in Bahia Asuncion."

Suppose somebody reads that, gets your address from 411.com and cleans out your house in Imperial Beach, which you have so gratiously identified as your hometown numerous times.

You should never disclose personal information on the internet. If you have a business, use the business name and location, not your home.

BajaNuts - 9-22-2009 at 09:30 PM

Very good point, arrowhead.........(bet ya haven't heard that one before...:lol::lol: [not!])

For that exact reason, I would not post trip info until after we return home.

bajaguy - 9-22-2009 at 09:40 PM

You should run you and your spouses name on:

It took me 45 seconds using the information in your profile to find that you live in a condo on Bluebell Court in Carlsbad which you paid $137,680 for in June, 1996. I also have your precise street address and phone number.

Lesson learned about keeping things private?

Barry A. - 9-23-2009 at 08:52 AM

I ran a check on me--------most of the info was wrong, but some was sorta accurate. They had my age wrong, too.

I use my real name here on NOMADS.

Barry

BajaNuts - 9-23-2009 at 10:32 AM

I ran 411's for 9 people, 2 people and 1 business showed up, 6 people did not show up.

I got a name for you to find if you want to play a game, arrowhead...

check your U2U

SDRonni - 9-23-2009 at 11:43 AM

I agree with Keri....

vgabndo - 9-23-2009 at 01:00 PM

Privacy on this board is interesting. On two occasions I have started successful threads wherein Nomads posted their "mug shots". I followed these threads carefully. I found it interesting that in both cases the posters who, in my judgment, were most filled with venom, incivility, hatred, or just plain nastiness did NOT post their image. Do I think they are hiding on purpose? Hell yes.

Cypress - 9-23-2009 at 01:20 PM

There are some evil folks dinking around in cyberspace. You can let 'em in to your life if you want to. Not a wise decision to make it easy for them.:(

I think the lesson learned here is that you, Arrowhead stepped out of bounds by posting other folks personal info on the forum without their permission. True facts or not, it was not your place. If you wanted to prove your point to that individual, then a U2U would have been more appropriate.

I think there's a lesson there for you to learn as well.

ps. For future reference Arrowhead, you do not have my permission to post anything of personal nature about me either.

If I posted information, it was publicly available information. I've never posted any personal information. In the United States, ownership of real estate is public information. It is available to anyone from the county recorder. In the United States, most people have their name, address and phone number in the telephone book. That is how crooks can find your house to rob it if they know you are in Mexico.

But, there is a solution: don't publish your name. How's that for a plan? Shall I wait until you confer with Osprey before you answer?

BajaSerg - 9-24-2009 at 12:00 PM

I never use my real name, but do not care if others use it.

BAJACAT - 9-24-2009 at 12:10 PM

Congratulations genius. You have accomplished something anyone who actually gave a rats tail could have done if they were so inclined. I think it's funny though that you claim by giving my name I have opened the door to revealing my "private" information, then when called out on it you cry that it is public information. It turns out that it IS public information anyways but the fact that you splash it across this forum is a bit disturbing. You made a point I guess, and it's that anyone can be a jacka$$. Have fun with all that private public info you got on me. I think you were totally out of line and are a complete coward.

BTW the public info you dug up on me may or may not be up to date.

No Mark, you continue to fail to comprehend. It wasn't a work of genius, it was an act of stupidity on your part. If you didn't post your name, I wouldn't know jackschitt about who you were or where you lived. Either would anybody else.

I still don't know why you give a plop, or what lesson you've proven. You posted public information. Who f-in cares? Unless you have something to hide or simply get a thrill picking fights online while hiding under some kind of fake name, I can pretty much guarantee you will never, EVER, call me "stupid" face to face. You, arrowhead, are a total coward. How does it feel to stand behind a fake name and act tough? I can't think of a more cowardly way to communicate. Really, why do you even participate in this forum? OK, let me see if I under stand your statement. You post here rarely but felt it necessary to insult me because I told somebody else they should not use their real name on the internet?
