Hi all,
Well its been a bumper crop of apples here in the sierra this year, so much so that some of the branches have snapped from the weight of the fruit!
This winter we have to radically cut them back! We gave bunches to our neighbors already, our horses are very happy with the bruised deadfall, and we
eat lots of fresh pies! Anyone traveling to the Sierra San Pedro Martir is welcome to stop by and get a pailful (or 2).
They are some of the best apples I've eaten and of course no chemicals!

And of course a good application for nice fresh apples a pay de manzana with pecan streusal and homemade vanilla ice cream!
My Wife Pamela makes a damn fine pay, Andrea down at rancho Meling made awesome pies too in her wood fired WW2 oven
(but they were made with apples from Rancho Conepcion!)

oh.....if you only knew how much I yearn for organic apples....any way of working a trade...lobster, abalone, tuna???? my first born...ooops...sorry

LOL well Shari any of those delectable trade items would work! But even if you had nothing to bring you would still be welcome to come get some, will
you by chance be up in Ensenada area to visit Sirenita in the next 2 weeks? Thats gonna be prime harvest time!

we wont be able to come up there as much as I would love to but maybe a thoughtful nomad may be able to somehow pick some up somehow....somewhere over
the rainbow.....(i digress)

Somewhere over the rainbow? If you click you heels 3 times (or 3 cold Pacifico's) I can pick them up on my way down on or about Wed., Oct. 21.
Shari, I have reservations at your fine establishment starting Saturday the 24th and I could give them to you then. AstroBaja, I will be in a 30 foot
RV, how far off the main highway are you and can I get there in the 30 footer?

Hmmmm howard appleseed, gonna need a kansas style twister to lift you in to our 6km long "road". 3 years ago the Baja mil ran though the ranch! It
took a bulldozer 5 hours to get our trailer in!
Shari I could leave a box of apples with Serinita next week when we go up to Ensenada.....

How wonderful! How old are those trees? Duane Meling makes the most wonderful apple butter and then sold it at the ranch. If you wanted to drive to
Hwy 1 with them, I'm sure you could sell them out of the back of a truck too on the side of the road too.

Nice trees astrobaja! I remember years ago the farmer down the mountain at Rancho Santa Cruz had some nice apple trees too---good climate up there.

I appreciate the tips from a grower such as yourself very much, for sure this winter we will do the pruning. Our neighbor at Potrero an old fellow
named Pibi has lots of experience with this so maybe we can get him up here to help us.
Wilderone: I think some of the older ones are in the order of 30-40 years old maybe even older. I dunno Don Jorge how old do some of the standards
get?? I'm pretty sure these apples were here BEFORE Aida Meling, so perhaps they were planted by the Kiliwa woman named Chepa or Tom Farlow before
Her!
Actually Duane was up here a few days ago with Pedro to pick a bunch so some of her famous apple butter is now being freshly made! Her apple butter
always came from La Concpecion apples!

Found a great way to use up our windfall for next year. Have to get a fruit grinder/press first but I have in mind to make English style apple cider
(its called Scrumpy jack in the UK). I want to do it with the wild yeast that occur naturally on the apples. Might try to find some oak barrels to do
the fermentation in, they say barrels that have been used for rum give a nice added flavour. Heck then we can perhaps sell our genuine house cider to
our customers!
