K Rico, it's only a little after 9 but you got me up for margaritas and linguini with bay scallops and capers tonight -- nice slide show. Had my feet in lots of your footprints around Concepcion and I really miss it. Thanks

Super clear pictures. Felt like I was there. I like how the subjects fill up the whole frame. Too bad those feet kept popping up in the shots.

Great photos. La Bocana was beautiful this past weekend, filtered orange by the smoke from the fires near Santo Tomas, one of which was still burning yesterday.

Other random thoughts:

I was not asked for a visa at the Maneadero/Santo Tomas checkpoint on my way south.

The search northbound at that checkpoint was very comprehensive.

Judging by the pace of the work between my last two visits, they should be done with the road widening project south of Maneadero by about, oh, 2015.

Tacos Los Poblanos was closed yesterday, dammit. Went to Tacos El Poblano instead. My 11-year old opined that their tortillas were slightly crispier, but their fillings, particularly the el pastor, lacked the depth of flavor of Los Poblanos' offerings. The 13-year old and I concurred. I think the difference is in the salsas.

Either I am imagining things, or the afternoon traffic in Ensenada has gone from bad to horrendous because the beach road south of the naval base is closed for a festival.

Hey DanO,

Do they ever ask for a Visa (FM-T) ? We were in La Bocana at my old house about 6 weeks ago but did not see a checkpoint for Visa's. Where would that be? i remember the old one in Maneadero...

No, I've never been asked for a visa at the new checkpoint at the top of the ridge just north of the Santo Tomas valley. The last time I was asked for visas by migracion was at the old Maneadero checkpoint in the early 90s. The reason I noted this is that another poster (oldjack?) said in a thread last week that he was stopped going southbound at the Santo Tomas checkpoint and was asked for papers. I was stopped there southbound last Thursday by the army and was asked where I was going, but there was no migracion official that I could see and the army did not ask for visas.

La Bocana, taken Aug. 09.

For those of you who haven't been but have all seen the sign heading south or north, you must set aside some time to see La Bocana and Puerto Santo Tomas.
