Beer drinking in Mexico

 Pages:  1

wessongroup - 9-26-2009 at 08:46 PM

Saw k-rico post of beautiful wooden beer keg... had never seen one here in the States or in Mexico before... saw them in Germany and other places, just not here.

It's an art to make the container and contents and this appears to be an example which was made right in Tijuana

Was hoping to learn more about the location of Mexican brewery's and the types of "beer" which are currently available in the Baja.

We may be able to turn the whole economy around.....

also made in Baja: 'Tecate' Beer and 'Mexicali' Beer (made in Tecate)...

The finest beer to most Nomads is 'Pacifico' (made in Mazatlan)... another fine beer is XX (Dos Equis) Special Lager and Amber... and the list goes on and on with both light and dark beers!

As MrBill pointed out the other day [and who's to question MrBill] the largest selling beer in Mexico is....are you ready?..... Bud Lite.
Whoda thunk.

Gee Russ, I thought it was 'common knowledge'!

There have been MANY beer polls taken on Nomad... Pacifico has always been the top choice... hasn't it?

I am talking about all Nomads (not just Mexicans... who prefer Bud Lite and Tecate from what I have seen).

Tecate from Tecate is very good... The Tecate sold up here in the US comes from the Monterrey brewery, and is inferior tasting, IMO.

Over twice as many voted for Pacifico (24) as the next place brew (Bohemia: 11)... Tecate and Negra Modelo tied for third place: 10.

Beer drinking in Mexico

wessongroup - 9-27-2009 at 08:05 AM

On beer, used to take beer with us when going down... took a lot of room in my 57 VW, but it made road a lot smoother.

I had also seen on the board, someone was mentioning they were bring 4-5 cases of "Bud" with them...

I used to enjoy the Corona, but this was way before anyone put fruit in it... my Dad drank only "Dos Equis", but then he like Luck Lager too...

I could drink them for a while, a week or so, but then I wanted something else.

When I saw the k-rico's post with that "wooden" beer barrel... made me curoius about changes in Mexican beer.

Looking for input/survey on how good the beer is down south of the border in Baja..

There is a Dos Equis can on the left fender of my 1957 VW, That is my Dad on the left and friend, south of San Quintin while camped in the pickle weed in 1967.

Thought maybe things have changed in Mexican Beer since 1967... hence the posts.

Wish I had taken more pictures, took 8 rolls of film and only two pictures…

Thanks for your input as always

Wiley

Hey, while searching Mexican beer facts, I found this interesting note... which has been a subject of discussion on Nomad:

The custom of squeezing a lime into Mexican beer began with Tecate beer.[citation needed] The original brewmaster was of Scottish descent (last name Lorimer), who brought the idea from Great Britain where sailors would be given limes with their daily ration of grog to stave off scurvy (this is where the expression "limey" came from).

wessongroup - 9-27-2009 at 08:22 AM

As usual... just super, and the "limey" a bonus too, outstanding...

I don't think it's the gringos drinking that slop. I do, however see Mexican laborers getting off work in the evening buying it by the boat load.:barf::barf:

Ken Bondy - 9-27-2009 at 08:32 AM

I have pointed this out before on the Nomad board (and others) but I don't think people were paying attention. I was the first American citizen to discover Pacifico, and I introduced it to the US of A. This happened on the old dive boat Baja Explorador in 1986 where it was served in little tiny bottles. You had to drink about 25 of them to get a modest buzz (after the last dive of the day, of course). I was so impressed with the brew that, after I returned from the dive trip, I found it in an obscure little Canoga Park market, bought several hundred little bottles, and introduced it to my beer-drinking friends. After that, its popularity spread widely throughout North America, until it finally was voted #1 in the Nomad survey.

So there.

David K - 9-27-2009 at 08:34 AM

THANK YOU KEN!

Russ - 9-27-2009 at 09:01 AM

I just can't drink much Pacific or Corona. I have discovered too many things in the recycled bottles that aren't beer. But I'm older and only swell beer on occasion now and prefer just drinking Tecate Light. I know, there's just no accounting for some peoples tastes. Only excuse is, I was a Coors baby and I'm reverting to my yute.

capt. mike - 9-27-2009 at 09:02 AM

i have been taste testing Miller High Life against Tecate, both in cans.

the Tecate wins hands down...hands are down because it is on my drive home in the afternoon. Both 24 oz cans. Tall Boys.

the tecate tastes smoother, has higher buzz content and does not foam as much when poured into my stealth cup.

Oh sure...I remember, Ken. We talked about the little bottles, splits as they're called. Mexicans call them espleets.
Anyway, as I mentioned then, in the Comfort Clubs way back when, if you wanted to buy a beer for one of the pretty little things working there, they were served an espleet and given a ticket to cash in at the end of her shift. I think you can still buy espleets at the dealer.
That's what I remember...I think.

No, don't say stuff like that... our amigos from the Great White North should know good beer, eh?

Corona might be for beginners or wine drinkers, maybe! Seriously, it was our favorite back when we were 18... My how things change as we mature!:light:

shari - 9-27-2009 at 09:45 AM

Any decent canadian who has tried Tecate...switched...the only reason they order Corona is because it was the only mexican beer available in Canada.

Here the only reason they drink bud light or any light beer is because it's way cheaper.

Before turistas started showing up in Asuncion, you could rarely find a Corona but now the new Modelorama had to start carrying it for the visitors.

But in Asuncion...Tecate is definately the beer of choice...ask any beer dealer.

And that's the truth

MitchMan - 9-27-2009 at 10:57 AM

In 1986 when you went fishing off a panga in Loreto and they asked you if you wanted beer on the boat and you said yes without any further detail, they would provide Coronas in recycled bottles. It was the "junk" beer and the cheapest beer in town. So, many people drank it, cause it was cheap (I've always thought that many beer drinkers (though not all) were beer drinkers because they fealt that hard liquor was too expensive).

I further theorize that since Corona was all over the place in Baja at that time and that many people that had good times in Baja connected their Baja good times to the ubiquitous beer, Corona,. When back in the states, one way to "reminisce" about the good times in Baja was to order Corona at their local pub. Then, all of a sudden, Corona became an "in demand" beer in California. Then the price went up to match and surpass Heineken, and, when asking for a Corona in a Newport Beach establishment, you were considered to have just ordered a "premium" call brand beer and you are charged accordingly.

Well, when I see a Corona today, I still see it as the "junk" beer that it was considered to be back in 1986. It seems that hype sells beer.

Back in 1980, the junk cheep booze was Early Times, Ancient Age, Cluny's, and the more expensive call brands were Smirnoff, Cutty Sark, and Paul Mason Wines. Now it's the reverse. Hype. People buy hype.

I say, close your eyes, drink what you can stand at the lowest price.

Sorry to inform you, that wooden beer keg is decorative only. Tijuana beer is great, even if it's not made in wood, specialy when they let you siphon it from the containers were it's made, The best!

In a way, I am handcuffed to Pacifico's.
I cannot return my empty bottles for cash, I lost the little piece of paper.
So, I have 2 empty cases of Pacifico beer in my garage.

Went through a tour of where they make Jack Daniels in TN. They made it "stainless steel" too, but it's "put up" (they have multiple barns that they stack the barrels on racks four high on both side of the barn by forklift) in oak barrels for flavor and color in the aging process of the "booze"

No samples were given :):)

Thanks for the info. I didn't know that but I did know that I like Tecate in MX but never thought much of the Tecate sold in the U.S.

This year I'm taking tapping equipment down with me and putting a keg in our fridge. Negra Modelo on tap. Stop by for a glass, or two.

Negro Modelo on tap!!!! woooo hooooo...cant wait to stop by...and I'm often in the neighbourhood:lol::lol: It's my favorite beer....you may need to bring 2 kegs!

Bajahowodd - 9-27-2009 at 12:22 PM

I have to take polite exception with David's observation about Tecate. Problem is, that just like in the US over the last couple of decades, small and regional brewers, who made distinctively flavored beer have been gobbled up by the big guys. that has tended to favor brewing for cost effectiveness more than taste.

Currently, Grupo Modelo has a 63% market share in Mexico. Their brands include Corona, Victoria, Pacifico and, of course, Modelo. They are 50% owned buy Anheuser Busch inBev. They brew their beers in many locations, not holding to the original brand that started the brewery.

The other large company is Cuauhtemoc Montezuma, subsidiary of Femsa, which is also Coca Cola of Mexico. Their brands include Tecate, Dos Equis, Sol, Bohemia, Superior, Carta Blanca, Noche Buena, Indio and Casta. Femsa ownership of OXX0 allows them to sell beer and soft drinks with no middleman. They also are the licensed distributor for Coors Light in Mexico.

In each case, no matter where brewed, there is the same proprietary recipe for the beer. In the case of Tecate, in particular, the largest Femsa brewery is in Monterey. The import company for the United States is in New York. That's basically why you no longer see Tecate brewed Tecate in the states.

Just to put the icing on the cake here, if I go to the market in Los Angeles and buy a sixpack of Sapporo, it will have been brewed by AB inBev at their Van Nuys facility. So much for Japanese beer!

woody with a view - 9-27-2009 at 12:32 PM

never did like japanese beer......:barf:

Bajahowodd - 9-27-2009 at 12:40 PM

Forgot to mention, and putting even more international flavor into the mix, the New York based importer for all Femsa beers sold in the US is Heinekin USA.

Carta Blanc== It even had a place on the bottom of the bottle that you put a new bootle into and twisted off the Cap!!

My favorite is still Modelo Negro.

But does anybody remmber the big Scare that cost Corona lots of Sales.??

Word went around that the mexican Workers were peeing in the Corona Beer!!
Know one store in San Francisco that lost a lot of money. Everybody stopped drinking Corona in San Fancisco until it was determined it was a Rumor.

My first ever beer was Carta Blanca, on the beach where we were camping at San Carlos Bay, Sonora in 1955------I was 17----bought for me by a young Mexican cowboy------then we each bought each other more, and on and on for a fun night-----the beer cost $0.15 a piece USD, I think-----He did not speak English, and I little Spanish, but we got on fine. The beer came from a huge Mexican beach party celebrating some holiday there on the beach. There was NOTHING at San Carlos then, other than the beautiful bay and some ranches nearby, and that great party.

Today------ I am with you Skeet---------Negro Modelo is my favorite.

Good memories!!!!

AND...All through the late 50's and early 60's on our surfing (safaris) with our buddies to the T.J. sloughs and K-38, San Miguel,Punta Colenet and San Quintin there was a mandatory agreed on first stop. It was the first order of high priorty business to secure liquids from the Tecate warehouse distributor in T.J.. Cheaper to buy the bottels with a return. It worked out to 10 cents a beer. Never could buy and carry enough. They sure tasted good!! ++C++:lol:

Beer?

This now-defunct brewery started up in North Dakota back in the late 60's. It's stock was offered exclusively to North Dakotans...who lost thier shirts.

I recall one investor (a close relative...very close) who sent a sample of the beer to the ND State Testing Laboratory. The sample test results came back very quickly.

Bajahowodd - 9-28-2009 at 11:40 AM

Anyone talking about Rheingold beer had to spend time in the New York area in the day!

I want to reiterate my earlier post about Tecate and that there really should not be a dif between Monterey or Tecate brewed beer as the company uses the same formula. However, David especially, you can buy beer brewed in Tecate in the states. Trader Jose's at Trader Joe's is brewed at the Tecate brewery. Frankly, I've not tried it, so I don't know if it's just Tecate in a clear bottle with a different label.

Cypress - 9-28-2009 at 11:44 AM

I know Western New York pretty well. As underage kids (of age was 18) we would buy 1/2 kegs of Schmidts from a distributor who worked out of an old barn out in the country.

Also "Hey Mable, Black Label"

I know I've drank more beer than water in my life.

Schaefer beer sponsored the Dodgers in their Brooklyn days. The Giants were sponsored by Knickerbocker. And the Yankees were sponsored by Ballentine. Back in those days, there was no proscription against showing people actually drinking alcoholic beverages on TV. It used to be a hoot to watch a Yankees doubleheader. Between every inning, there was a live Ballentine commercial that consisted of the play by play announcer taking a churchkey to a can of beer, pouring it, and quaffing it. Legendary Yankees announcer Mel Allen was also a legendary alcoholic. By the middle of the second game, it was more than obvious in his call of the game.

Crusoe - 9-28-2009 at 02:02 PM

BajadanDi, I would have to agree 100% that the Brew 102 was probably the worst beer I ever tasted. But what does a 14 yo kid in the mid fifties know about beer tasting. It got us all drunk and made us laugh and thats what counted. Will never forget the headaches we all got from that weasel pee. How did we survive??? ++C++:barf::barf:

Growing up in LA I became very friendly with Brew 102. Without commenting on its quality, I do have an academic question. I seem to remember that there was some significance to the number "102", other than it was the brew selected right after 101 other brew recipes were tried. Does anyone remember this and know the answer?

Bajahowodd - 9-28-2009 at 02:14 PM

Beats me. But their brewery was located right on the 101. So much so, the freeway made a jog around the building. Could be that the 102 was tied into the 101.

DENNIS - 9-28-2009 at 02:30 PM

It mentions here that it was the 102nd try to get what they got.

Ken... You are corect about the 102 name. They used advertise it on early morning T.V. shows. KTLA ?... Unfortunately its just been to many years and I cannot recall. And as an old add man told me " Its all about marketing" and that is why RHEINGOLD won the battle. A sexy good looking German pastry lady on the can with european like Rheine name paired up with GOLD!!! Your subconscience didn't have a chance. And remember St. Pauli Girl??? I remember Bush Bavarian coming along and displacing Brew 102.. Wasn't much better tasting beer either. ++C++

I don't know the technical difference but, many many years back, Bohemia was exported to the states and on the box it said Ale. Perhaps it still does.

Still does. I've seen them recently but, I'll confirm that tomorrow.

mulegemichael - 9-28-2009 at 07:14 PM

the beer in my heyday in the NW was "BEER" beer...that was the label...creative, huh?..we bought tons of it as it was dirt cheap...had to look for your brain the next morning...and..why is corona so skunky when pacifico is most of us folks favorite and aren't they brewed in the same brewery???..was that a question?...and...el candil in mulege now has modelo negro and modelo regular on tap..served in a frosted mug..you do the math.

No way. Pacifico is brewed in Mazatlán and I think Corona is brewed in Pico Rivera...or Hell.
At the Pacifico brewery, they used to have a huge beer garden with a half dozen Mariachi bands playing all over the place and a big mug of Pacifico draft cost a half peso, four cents.
I've asked here in the past if it's still there but haven't heard a real answer.

Cear bottles and light produce skunky beer.

UNC chemists figure out what causes ‘skunky beer’
CHAPEL HILL – Many people think beer tastes bad all the time, while others, who enjoy the alcoholic malt beverage, believe it turns "skunky" only when it isn’t handled properly.
Now chemists at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill say they have figured out precisely what goes wrong with beer to give it that offensive "light-struck" flavor.

"Historically, beer has been stored in brown or green bottles to protect hop-derived compounds from light in a process we call photodegradation," said Dr. Malcolm D. Forbes, professor of chemistry.

"Hops help flavor beer, inhibit bacterial growth and are largely responsible for the stability of the foam in the head," Forbes said. "Hops, however, are light-sensitive, and the three main compounds in them identified as being light-sensitive are called isohumulones. When attacked by either visible or ultraviolet light, these break down to make reactive intermediates known as free radicals that lead to the offensive taste and skunky odor."

Using isohumulones supplied by brewing companies and a sophisticated technique called time-resolved electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy, the UNC scientists and colleagues determined what happens chemically during photo degradation. Lasers served as the light source for producing the chemical reactions they studied.

"This light problem is a phenomenon that was reported in the literature as early as 1875, but until now the detailed mechanism has not been unraveled," Forbes said. "The final product of the reaction turns out to be what we call "skunky thiol," an analog of a compound found in skunk glands that produces a very bad taste and smell. This molecule has an extremely low taste and smell threshold in humans, just a few parts per trillion."

A report on the findings will appear in the Nov. 5 issue of a publication called Chemistry - A European Journal and appeared online this weeek. Besides Forbes, authors are UNC chemistry doctoral student Colin S. Burns and Dr. Denis De Keukeleire and his doctoral student Arne Heyerick of the University of Gent in Belgium.

The new paper describes how the team succeeded in creating the free radicals, working out their structure, explaining reactions that made them and learning precisely where in the isohumulone compounds photo breakdown takes place.

"Understanding mechanisms behind changes in beer tastes is important because the world beer industry is hoping to save money by storing, shipping and selling beer in less expensive clear glass," Forbes said. "Producers of Miller Genuine Draft, for example, already do that by adding a chemically modified hop compound to the beer. We have found evidence that Miller beer is still photochemically active, but it doesn’t make the same free radicals, and so those can’t lead to bad-tasting skunky thiols as quickly."

Corona beer also is sold in clear bottles, but manufacturers do not used a modified hop product, he said. Instead, they usually keep their bottles boxed to exclude light and encourage drinkers to add a slice of lime to improve the odor.

"Corona is marketed extremely cleverly," the chemist said.

Forbes’ laboratory is one of the most sophisticated in the world for studying super-fast radical reactions that take place in billionths of seconds. His Belgian collaborators have applied for a patent on a process that will alter and retard the photochemistry of beer to make the beverage easier to store and give it a longer shelf life.

The National Science Foundation, the Interbrew-Baillet Latour Foundation of Leuven, Belgium, and the UNC chemistry department supported the research.

Very few beers are bottled in clear glass like Corona and Sol (yuk). Maybe exposure to light has something to do with it. BTW, I've had some skunky Pacifico too. The ballenas seem to taste better for some reason. Different brewery??

I buy Tecate for daily consumption, Dos Equis lager when in a bar/restaurant. Pacifico if neither of the two others are available.

As long as I can recall, Miller Hi Life has had a bad odor and a bad reputation.

Good article....Thanks.

Miller High Life, the Champagne of Bottled Beers. I drank that and used on my Corn Flakes for awhile because it was the cheapest at the corner store and tasted OK to me.

mulegemichael - 9-28-2009 at 07:39 PM

i still like miller genuine draft in a can when in a boat fishing for chinook in the pacific nw.

Ricardo - 9-28-2009 at 07:41 PM

I've had a few different experiances with Skunky Beer,
Beer in a brown bottle when exposed to the sun will still get skunky,
I've forced myself to drink it on occasion. Put it it in a cold but suuny stream and yes it still gets Skunky. A glass of beer sitting in the sun will get skunky. Corona in a Can tastes totally different than Corona in a clear bottle. Most beers that come in clear bottles are now packaged in cases that protect them from the sun and light ( at least where I live). Light is the problem. Canned beers aren't Skunky.

The best beer anywhere, founded in 1397, yup, that's right, 1397. I used to drink it in a bar that served in glass mugs kept in the freezer with a thin slice of lemon floated on top.

I think I know what your problem is, Rick. Don't let your beer sit around. Pick it up and drink it like it's the last day of your life. Your treatment of beer is bordering on alcohol abuse.:lol:

Ricardo - 9-28-2009 at 07:56 PM

Some people might think that, Ha Ha, I just cracked a Miller Genuine Draft in a clear bottle, not too bad but it was in a sealed case and straight to the fridge. Trust me those basketball team fund raisers know where to come on a bottle/can drive so, I think I'm OK with the abuse issue. In Mexico I drink Pacifico or whatever is available
