what the heck is THAT?
Pez Sol? did ya eat it?Osprey - 10-1-2009 at 06:47 AM
That's a Mola Mola, a sunfish and they're protected almost everywhere. Hope you let it go.55steve - 10-1-2009 at 07:32 AM
The fish is actually an opah (AKA moonfish) and is totally legal to catch/keep. It is a fairly rare catch on the west coast and is much more common
in Hawaii. It is excellent eating and is at least on par with well prepared dorado.
On a side note: Mola mola (AKA sunfish) is not protected anywhere that I know of. They are trash to eat from what I hear anyway.

I never heard of an Opra. What would be close Soul guy?DanO - 10-1-2009 at 10:43 AM
Pink semi-firm flesh that whitens when cooked, care should be taken not to overcook. Fairly fine grained and delicate in flavor. Very tasty dipped
in egg and coated with panko breadcrumbs, shredded coconut and crushed macadamia nuts and sauteed (but what isn't, really?). Makes me hungry just
looking at the pic -- they were hauling them off the truck at the fish market in Hanalei when I was there in August.55steve - 10-1-2009 at 11:24 AM

Not if you speak Japanese. I've heard they'll kill for one. They probably eat them freakin' raw like they do with everything else.
What happened to them folks anyway? Didn't Westinghouse put up a stove factory in Occupied Japan?Iflyfish - 10-1-2009 at 12:51 PM
DanO

Don't know. I wonder how the macadamia nuts in the coating would come out in a deep fry. Sounds worth a shot.Skipjack Joe - 10-1-2009 at 04:07 PM

42# Opah (Moonfish).
Caught in 1975 by my neighbor and now retired Dentist. He gave it to me when I bought my Beach House in
'93. He caught in amongst Tuna and Dolphin far off San Diego.4baja - 10-2-2009 at 06:29 AM
nice catch steve!! they catch them up here when the albacore run on live bait. sun fish are partly hollow on the inside with very little guts.pascuale - 10-7-2009 at 06:53 AM
OPAH!
Once in a lifetime catch there. Ive always wanted to catch one. Usually they are caught a bit deeper when fishing Kelp Paddies in Northern Baja
Summers. It is in no way a Mola Mola or Sunfish, which are not protected anyways, and taste like chit too, plus have about an inch of nasty slim all
over them. It sure is cool when you see them underwater though.Alan - 10-7-2009 at 07:15 AM
Congrats to you! I heard the catch over the radio that day.55steve - 10-7-2009 at 08:28 AM
Thanks!
I heard one of the Ensenada guys on the radio all excited about catching one that day also. We actually targeted this fish - we fished a paddy for
YFT limits and after it shut off I kept seeing a solitary large fish at 100' on the sonar - I told Jason to drop an iron down into the zone and it was
almost instant bendo. We lost a much larger one a couple weeks earlier using the same technique.
