Double payned (Pain in the butt) windows in Baja

Mexicorn - 10-2-2009 at 03:44 PM

Looked high and low for a standard 60"x 80" sliding glass window with screen double sencillo( double payne) de vinyl. Buena suerte everyone tells me. The cheapest I found was off the free road past Rosarito $400.00 and it looked used. Oh dont get me wrong there is a million places that well make them custom make and deliver singled payned aluminum for about $250.00 US but I want double payned windows. I spent half the day combing Los Globos and Avenida Reforma in Ensenada por Nada.
Dont even think about the homo depot those prices are nuts because I think everything comes from the US and they tack on an aditional 28% to everything. Anyone got any Ideas?

Go onto Craigs List, San Diego.

I found two perfect used double paned windows, low e glass, vinyl windows for $100.
They were in perfect condition, presently installed in a room that faces the sun and they really block the heat from the sun

Good Luck!

Hey I can pick up a new one at the homo depot in IB for $475.00 Tax included. So dont hate because I'm trying to save a couple of dollars. What are you doing since "Renes bar " shut down recently? Not everyone is wealthy like you!
Were you not the guy I met at "Plan-B?":?:

We have six 8 footers at our place. Paid around $ 280.00 each at Home base about 1990.
Drawback: we live on a golfcourse and had an outside pane broken in the stationary door. Nowhere anybody to be found to fix it. Had another outside pane broken by a visitor. Same story. And hauling them is a major "Pane:P" Those suckers are heavy.

losfrailes - 10-3-2009 at 10:06 AM

durrelllrobert - 10-4-2009 at 09:14 AM

Why a slider? There are plenty of dual payne frnch doors available in the size you want.

woody with a view - 10-4-2009 at 09:26 AM

good point. i talked my friend outta putting in the slider, so now i gotta put in french doors for him. they really are more functional and look better also...

msawin - 10-4-2009 at 07:48 PM

French doors VS sliding doors.....

I have cheap wood inswing french doors in my Norte Calif. Casa master bedroom...And they are the best for the local.. [dual pane, also].

Dual swing doors, "french" in swing or out swing do just that.. They swing into something. Can and are a pain in the ass for some spots. Out swing leaves one with out screen doors. If you have the room for the un-used swing space area, French are sweet.. But costly $$.

Sliders are cheap and do not create a space issue.

French Doors are great until the weather warms up. Then, you gotta put deoderant on the hinges.:biggrin::biggrin:

Oh well..I thought that was really funny.

msawin - 10-4-2009 at 08:04 PM

deoderant? That is what I have been missing..

Agreed French doors look better and function better and... are less expensive, yes less expensive made of vinyl.
The rub is buying those invisable screens at $150.00 a pop. Once you've installed the screens sure enough someone who is old feeble, blind or just plain drunk walks right through one then it's back to the homo depot for another one.

Yes the homo depot where men bond with tools!

The vinyl french doors we sell, go for around $1800.00 . The "phantom" retracting screen doors that we do not sell but refer to, go for around $325.00. dollars... ????

Bob and Susan - 10-5-2009 at 05:45 AM

any screen guy in the usa can easily make screens
to fit out-swing french doors

we had them made
under $100 each

the problem with out-swing french doors is WIND!!!

you can't open the doors in the wind
or they can get ripped off the "deodorized" hinges

Another Approach... Install two 3'x6' staionary double paine fixed windows on each side of a 3'x 6'8" inswing double paine lighted door. Be sure you lay it out, so that the tops of all the glass revreals are at the same elevation. But what would I know? I have only been a carpenter for 54 years and still learn something new each day. Very Satisfying. ++C++

UnoMas - 10-5-2009 at 08:03 PM

Phantom retractable screen doors open when someone or a pet, walk/run into them. I installed them in my house in 2001 and can't count the number of times that someone has walked into them them. Still working great and no screen damage. I think I paid $250.00 per when I bought them and they can be made to order. I installed 42" doors for ease of moving things in or out, best money I ever spent. There are many knock off's and can't say how they fare but you usually get what you pay for. ;D

Phantom screens are great, you don't see them, my Dog has gone thru them twice, fortunetely I was able to repair them back to pretty much new, I now have the trick down, I put in front of the screen door a ice chest or crate of some kind, at least you stop someone or a Dog from going thru it, they are very nice except for the problem of not seeing it.

Well, that won't work for me...not for long anyway. I'm gettin' so old and ugly, my next girlfriend will have to be blind. It'll be a full time job keeping her untangled from one of those things. My commercial fishing days are over.
