Another reason not to go back to Iowa.

Martyman - 10-7-2009 at 08:28 AM

Hey Udo
I can't make it this year. Be sure to try the Espolon reposado! You might need a taxi afterwards. It was a lot of fun when I went a few years ago.

Udo - 10-7-2009 at 08:35 AM

Ey, Martyman!
Thanks for the tip...sorry you won't make it this year.

We will be taking the Mexicoach bus from the parking lot across the TJ border. $6.00 U.S. is a bargain for the round trip, considering the busses have their own line in crossing back to the US, and a dedicated customs line at the immigration building. It's about a 15 minute wait from TJ to the US side. Be sure to bring your US passport, however.

Osprey - 10-7-2009 at 08:42 AM

Udo, stay away from any that come with bail money.

Udo - 10-7-2009 at 08:44 AM

:lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::lol::!:

Bajaboy - 10-7-2009 at 09:03 AM

Oh my gosh, I can't believe you would even consider going to Mexico...let alone with your family. Are you going to take any of those tourist police with you? Remember, don't drink the water and no matter what....don't drive at night!!!!

:tumble::tumble::spingrin::spingrin:

Have fun!

Udo - 10-7-2009 at 05:57 PM

There haven't been any publisized killings in TJ in the last few months

and TJ has always been a lot of fun!
And especially with the tequila expo in a few days.
Take a look at http://vivabajacalifornia.com/html/videos.html

Fernando does a terrific job in presenting TJ as well as Rosarito beach...talk about a positive twist!

I'll second that about Fernando!!!! We need more people like him:yes:

postholedigger - 10-8-2009 at 05:50 PM

Where is this taking place?

Udo - 10-8-2009 at 07:38 PM

The Expo is right in front (the entire block) of the Fronton Palacio (the Jai Alai stadium).
See previous year's photos when you do a search for the Expo from last year.
Click on the link http://tequila-expo.com
Costs $5.00 for the tastings (similar to a wine tasting tour at a winery). You'll end up tasting about 75 tequilas from all over the country.

David K - 10-9-2009 at 10:26 PM

If they did a bus trip to the TJ Brewery... well I would be there!

Why beer instead of Tequila?

Have you heard:

ONE TEQUILA, TWO TEQUILA, THREE TEQUILA, FLOOR!!!:light::yes:

Maybe go to watch Udo? That might be fun??!!:tumble::saint:

fdt - 10-10-2009 at 09:24 AM

Same as every year, I have free admissions to the Expo-Tequila. Just let me know what times you will be there and I will meet with you.
The best time is Event Opening Day, thursday the 15th at 1PM.

Udo - 10-10-2009 at 03:42 PM

David

I'm bringing my family this time, including my seester. I think I need to be in my best behavior.
I have talked several friends, and neighbors to come down also, but they are coming down on Sunday.

David K - 10-10-2009 at 08:01 PM

You are always on good behavior... Baja Angel and I would like to come down too...

SeaShell - 10-13-2009 at 04:08 PM

I hope to make it. Sounds like fun. My Mexican boyfriend is afraid to go to TJ so I may have to threaten to go on my own. :dudette:

SMALLER, BUT STILL FUN...ESPECIALLY WITH FERNANDO & SIMONE![/B]

1:00 P.M. arrived and the Expo opened. PLUS Fernando was waiting for the five of us with passes in hand!
The organizers moved the Expo one block to the North, which was about 100' shorter than last year. The shorter bock accomodated about 20 Tequila exhibitors, compared to about 50 the last couple of years. I think we would have had to make three passes at all the booths to get a little over a shot glass worth of tastings. They had some really BAD Tequila ($2.00/ bottle), and they also had the other extreme with CARA DE ORO as well as DEGOLLADO. Both were double anejo. Extremely tasty and somewhat expensive...$65.00 and $75.00 per bottle U.S. The rest of the tequilas we got to taste were in the mid $20.00 U.S. per bottle. They did have El Charro for $11.00 U.S. per box that contained a one liter plus a quarter liter, and they gave you an extra bottle with purchase. El Charro is many Nomads' favorite cheap tequila. There was no Espolon, Martyman!
One of the best tequilas we tasted was not available for sale...it was a buotique tequila for which we had to pay $5.00 U.S. to taste. The photo is below. It came in a 10 gallon jug and had a dead rattlesnake preserved inside. This booth also sold liters of PULQUE. They also had a variety of other unusual drinking items for sale.
David K missed out because one booth offered a large variety of beers for sale.
I was somewhat disappointed in the food. The chefs were oviously frazzled by having to feed too many people at one time and did not put any local love into the food preparation. The Mexican pizza was bland, as well as the tamales wrapped in banana leaves. The one place that offered carne asada also had bland food (the seasonings were not there).
If Fernando would not have supplied the passes, the entry fee would have been $5.00 U.S., and well worth the price of admission. The only thing I wish the organizers would have brought back was the full tent with a roof. It was somewhat warm with the sun beating down on us, and I'll bet the exhibitors that were on the East side were really getting to sweat.
One my personal highlights was when I managed to talk the vendor from the Alma de Mujer distributorship, where I purchased the Cara De Oro tequila) out of the nice golf shirt off his back with the purchase. Fernando even said I shoudda been a Mexican!
The front entrance to the Expo:

The best HUG!

The inside of the Expo, looking South

Fernando and the organizers

Fernando, Jana and myself. The agave weighed about 100 lbs!

This was the booth that had all the collectible bottles.

Other food items were also available, including fried grosshoppers (yum!)

Some of the tequilas exhibited as well as sold.

Controling the shot sizes with the inverted bottles.

The pizza was tasteless as well as dry, but looked good!

Folklorico dancers entertainers us most of the day

I think I reached my maximum photos allowed per posting, the copy & paste no longer works.
Part 2 coming up.

gotta love them grasshoppers, a staple for a young gringo sampling the fare in Oaxaca WAAAAY back when.

David K - 10-18-2009 at 05:20 PM

Thank you so much Udo!!! Well done!!!

Udo - 10-18-2009 at 05:41 PM

Thanks, David!

Jana said that even on a slow day...Baja was still better than no BAJA!

Whata trooper, huh?

tjBill - 10-18-2009 at 08:54 PM

Nice pictures. :D

From the pictures it looks like arriving early is the way to go. I arrived Saturday at 7:00 pm and there was a 20 minute line to get in. Inside it was hard to move because it was so crowded. It only got worse as the night wore on.

Had a great time though.

Udo - 10-19-2009 at 08:17 AM

Here are three more photos at the Expo:

More of the packaged food: Spicy peanuts, toasted garlic, and the grasshoppers. The white balls in the background were a fermented (and very delicious) Monterey Jack cheese.

The alternate drink booth (notice the PULQUE) which included the tequila in the large container with a preserved rattler.

The now infamous preserved rattler. Even tough we had to pay $5.00 U.S. to taste this delicacy, it was well worth it. The third best tequila in the place...our opinion.

ewwwwwwwwwwwwww......

Cyanide41 - 10-19-2009 at 11:52 AM

Udo, just wonder which you thought was the best. I tried a few, but most of them I thought tasted similar with only a few I thought were better than the rest.

Woooosh - 10-19-2009 at 04:40 PM

So who rolled the agave home after all that Tequila? :)

Udo - 10-19-2009 at 05:55 PM

I wanted to roll the thing home, Woooosh, but I had to show up after closing on Sunday night. Cool prize but not worth the drive from Big Bear Lake.

Just about all the tequilas were somewhat similar, Cynide41, a little more oakey, a little less oakey. And most the bottles were near the $20.00 U.S. range. The worst one by a wide margin was the TWOBUCKCHUCK of tequilas, can you believe a $2.00 U.S. bottle? I won't even bother mentioning the name.
The two best tequilas were the DEGOLLADO, which was sold in a very heavy (furniturequality) oak box, as well as the CARA DE ORO, which included the (literally) shirt off the server's back. Both of them I bargained down to about $60.00 U.S. each from about $75.00, with Fernando's help.
Other than tequila, the coolest souveniers were a machined, engraved and polished aluminum oval tray that holds two shot glasses as well as a concave spot for limes. It came from the ARETTE Tquila booth. The other one was a pair of micro-mini flasks complete with key chain from the CABRITO booth
Also available were fairly expensive tequilas in collector bottles. They are at the Expo every year, but never have their collectible tequila available for tasting. Cool bottles, however.
IMHO, this was the best Tequila Expo so far because of the exhibitor's extras as well as other packaged items available. Lesser number of exhibitors notwithstanding.

David K - 10-20-2009 at 08:48 AM

Thanks Udo... appreciate the report and photos. Thanks also for the phone call from Tijuana... We ended up staying home... didn't even go to the Plaster City off road race to watch Josh in the pit.

wessongroup - 10-20-2009 at 03:02 PM

Hey, thanks much... great photo's, and everyones smiles say it all... :):)

Udo - 10-20-2009 at 08:37 PM

Tequila has a way to make everyone friends with each other...it's a happiness elixir

Be sure you make it there next year!
