Baja Recovery Updates

ecomujeres - 10-6-2009 at 08:11 PM

We've been in Mulege for the last week.

Mulege is slowly pulling itself together and the spirits of most of our Mulegino friends are pretty good. There was a moment of concern among them when it looked like TS Olaf might bring flooding, but they really took it all in stride.

I have a new project and web page with the latest updates on what services are available in Mulege.

It's time that we need to spread the good news from Baja and let everyone know about the reality of the current conditions. It seems like so many people believe that, for example, Mulege was so damaged that there's nothing left or nothing open. We were happy to see many of our old friends back in business and hoping now for the tourists to come.

I hope that some of you will contact me with news of your community's recovery (see the above page for info about this).

Debra,
Great job! Thanks for doing such great work in supporting your friends and neighbors. It is nice to know that the businesses are moving on and prepared to do business with travelers. This is an excellent graphic display of thier progress in such a short time.

If you're interested in seeing photos of our trip we made recently to the Mulege area, with an emphasis on the effects of Hurricane Jimena on the desert and plants, then go to:

Debra - The Mulege river road from the Oasis down to the boat launch (yep, we have a dock/launch again) has been graded, and is now as smooth as a baby's bottom. Git your boats down here for Bart's 3-Fish Tourney this weekend folks! Registration Friday 4 PM at Bart's (Junga's), tourney on Saturday, banquet Sunday. Should be lots of fun. Let's all get back out on that gorgeous water! Entry fee is 250 pesos AND you get a free hat courtesy of Mulegemichael...banquet included in the entry fee.

After our whirlwind trip to Mulege and back in Sep-Oct, we are now back in Mulege for the time being. And we've finally had time to get away from cleaning and organizing to scope out what is happening in town.

The continuing recovery is very heartening and people are more and more optimistic.

I met a tourist passing through town a few days ago who was surprised by how good the town looked (well, then there is the Orchard...). He said that his impression was that there had been nothing at all left of Mulege.

So, visit this page for updates on Mulege's status.

And I'd appreciate any updates from Nomads living in Baja that I can put up about how their towns are recuperating.

Great job.
Everything looks more or less like that last time I saw it.
Glad that things are getting back together.

I have no pix, because we were lucky this year and didnt have anything but some much needed rain.

Viva Mulege!
