The long dirt detour is gone... the surprise is much of the new highway north of San Felipe is only 2 lanes wide, but with wide shoulders now... safe for bicycling eco tourists. As Baja Warrior recently reported, there will be an elevated interchange at the junction with Hwy. 3 to Ensenada... and the new road widening is continuing north from Hwy. 3 for a few more miles, right now.

0.0 Okay, these notes are northbound from San Felipe, starting opposite the El Dorado Pemex (near the big Rockadile sign):

11.8 miles (km. 160) 4 lanes down to new 2 lanes wide.

22.2 miles end of new road, construction work continues north.

23.6 military checkpoint.

23.7 Hwy. 3 Jcn. (new bridge u.c.).

30.6 (km. 130) End of widening construction

87.5 Begin 4 lane road (Hwy. 4 / Algodones jcn.)

106.6 Toll Road entrance (Tecate Hwy. 2-D/ Libremente de Mexicali). 52 pesos.

Hey DK thanks.

What border crossing do you recommend for people heading south to bcs with a van and no trailor? Is it a crap shoot between Otay, San Ysidro, TJ and Tecate?

Does anyone know a dog friendly hotel in San Felipe that is not a dump?
I think I'm going next week to bring stuff to those kids mentioned in the other thread.

The best dog friendly motel in San Felipe is the El Cortez. I recommend you stay in the bungalows which have a lot of sand in front of them.

I would use Tijuana to the Toll/ Scenic Hwy. 1-D or Otay to Blvd. 2000... avoid as much city traffic as possible either route, but not go way out of the way to Tecate heading south... Coming north, always Tecate... well, almost always!

I'm assuming the recommendation for Tecate Northbound is rooted in the normally shorter wait in line. However, and I must confess, it's always a treat to wander around Tecate, but for those headed North on I-5, doesn't the shorter border line become a wash with the extra miles traveled?

I would have to say "maybe"... If the border line is an hour longer or less at San Ysidro, then yes... If it is more than an hour longer, then Tecate wins. However, I personally would much rather be driving for an hour through the countryside than be ideling in a long line of cars and exhaust for that same hour (or almost any time)!

Now, how long was the wait at 4 pm Tuesday in San Ysidro or Otay? In Tecate it was 5 minutes... about 5 cars ahead of me in line.

the best resturant is just north of town about 5 miles it's latin garden, on the west side of hwy 5 just south of el dorado
