The breeder called. "I lost my job and can't afford to feed the leftover puppy - you know, the blind and deaf one. I am going to club him to death
with a baseball bat."
So, what do you do? We went and brought the puppy home. He was underweight, flea-infested and sick with Parvo. We had to force feed him food and
water around the clock and we braced ourselves to lose him.
On the seventh day, he stood up, wobbled over to the water bowl and drank, then he ate some food on his own.
I did some research on the internet and scared myself silly with information about how White Great Danes can be dangerous and have unstable
temperaments.
"What are we getting ourselves into?" I worried.
Well, the little white dog will be two years old shortly and if you don't look at the empty eye socket, you would never know that he is handicapped.
He has filled out nicely and weighs in at 136 pounds.
And, as far as temperament goes, his name should be Gandhi. Children run up to him and throw their arms around him, he is that approachable.Iflyfish - 10-10-2009 at 07:02 AM

Seems to me I remember when you first adopted him and were dealing with the Parvo---what a great job that he recovered from the Parvo.
And I am sure his temperment is a reflection of his upbringing. So glad he did not become a throw-away dog.

How do you weigh a one-eyed, deaf white Great Dane?
Very carefully. (Snicker)
But, the serious answer is Petsmart, they have a floor scale that can weigh anything from chihuahuas to bull mastiffs.
We could take him to a local (Rosarito) big animal vet, but it's more convenient to simply stop at Petsmart when we are in San Diego, we always have a
list of things to pick up there, anyway.
Additionally, this goofy, white deaf, (by the way,how do you yell at a deaf dog?),and one-blue-eyed dog is housebroken (Thank the Lord!) and he also
knows knows hand signals for come, sit and stay.
Another BTW, the Petsmart in Chula Vista is the highest dollar volume location in the entire chain (and this one is smaller than most and doesn't have
the pet hotel attached.
I was able to make what I think is a pretty good guess as to why that is the situation when the guy in the line ahead of us checked out with thirty

I'll bet yelling at a deaf dog is similar to yelling at a cat. No response unless the yelling is accompanied with lots of arm waving and theatrics.
And then the response is either disdain or confusion (what? I'm not allowed on the table? well you've never mentioned it before.....).

Years ago I trained my white deaf cat by stomping on the floor to get her attention...especially when leaving the room. If she turned around and you
were gone she would start meowing...very loud.
When I got home from work I would stomp on the floor and she would come running. She had one green and one blue eye...called a marble eyed cat. She
was the sweetest cat and a pleasure to own. Never caused any problems.

To all the good god loving people (oops, I meant to say "dog loving" people).

add to that the US plated vehicles who's driver's don't actually have a pet....well...... top sales for a little store.

The White Dog, but, when we took him into our home, he was, among all the other problems, infected with worms and suffering from mange.
He weighed eight pounds on the day we got him and lost two in tjhe first week, due to the Parvo and the other complications.
From the onset, he said to anybody and everyone, "I want to live!"
We are the lucky people who got a chance to help him.
