Lime and Beer ?

CortezBlue - 10-19-2009 at 04:39 PM

Ok, I know that many of you know it alls are not going to like this post, but this is from field detective work!!

I have traveled all parts of Mexico, except Mexico City, and when ever I drink beer, preferable Tecate, and I squeeze by lime into the can or beer, I always ask the same question?

Is putting lime in beer a Mexico thing?

I just got back from a 10 day trip to the Mexico Mainland and I have asked every Mexican walk of life and every bar tender or waiter this question and I get the same answer! "That is the way gringos drink Mexican beer!"

With the exception of a few folks that I have talked with, most Mexicanos will wipe the end of the bottle or edge of the can with the lime, and then they slowly chew the lime and then drink the beer. My young workers that I have that help me around my house tell me that squeezing the lime into the beer changes the tase of the beer.
They also do not do the lime and salt thing with Tequila according to our guide at a small tequila distilleria in Jalisco.

So let the flames begin, but it is what it is, and oh by the way, I will continue to squeeze my lime into my beer when ever possible, because I am a gringo!!:fire::biggrin:

well, that of course is a matter of taste.
The Britts like warm beer, the Mexicans like lime in their beer.
Americanos like beer which is made from rice (Budwiser)
The Germans have a purity law from 1516 and still in effect, saying no other ingrediant should be in beer as: hops, yeast, barley and water.
No chemicals at all.
What the heck!
Can we discuss taste?
Either you got ot or not. But what's the best one, that's the question.

Limes are for Sapphire/tonics and margaritas

Fred - 10-19-2009 at 09:09 PM

Mexicans don't put lime in their own beer because they drink "Bud Light"

tjBill - 10-19-2009 at 09:47 PM

A popular c-cktail I see only Mexicans drink is the Michelada or Chelada.

It consists of salt, lime and beer served on ice.

Have never seen a gringo drink one.

This topic has come up over and over again.

A slice of lime on top of a beer bottle is there to repel the flies! It works! Try it.

Flies will NOT land on lime juice!

They have Clamato in them too.
I drink them ALL the time on both sides of the border when camping and at home. I have had them in Baja Sur where they actually had clams in them. They taste good and they are good for you. The Michelada is a litmus test for me at Mexican restaurants on this side of the border, if they serve them I know the food will be authentic.

Slice a lime

One explanation goes that the lime will kill any bacteria on the bottle opening.

In Mexico and Central America wedges of lime or lemon come with the salad. A person take it and squeezes it over the salad and maybe they avoid or lessen stomach problems.

?Quien sabe?

My brother squeezes the limes over everything and chants quietly under his breath "puro, puro, puro". It seems to work. He is still alive.

Limes N beer

Somewhere (possibly on this board) I heard that the lime in a beer was a marketing ploy by Corona Beer......just like the hype over Cinco de Mayo........another way to sell more beer.

David K - 10-20-2009 at 08:27 AM

Mexicans put lime on everything... and it is good!

Try Cup of Noodles/ Top Ramen with lime... as it was served to us at Rancho Laguna Chapala, as the soup before dinner.

castaway$ - 10-20-2009 at 09:27 AM

:barf:Lime kills the skunky taste of corona and instantly kills the taste of bad tequila like cuervo gold. Personally it's not for me in my beer or after a shot of quality tequila.:bounce:

I squeeze a little lime juice and sprinkle a bit of salt only on the rim of a Tecate can. I don't put lime juice directly into beer and I really don't like to see a wedge shoved into the neck of my Pacifico. Especially after an experience. As you know, most beer bottles in Mexico are returnable. Yep, once I started chugging on a bottle of Pacifico and discovered the remains of a fuzzy green well-molded strip of lime peel inside.

i love REAL micheladas that are made with beer, ice, tequila and clamato.

i'm going to have some this Sunday while the Cardinals dismantel the Giants:

tall glass, ice, juice 1/2 key lime, jigger of Sausa blanco tequila, tecate beer to 2" of rim, cap with clamato. salt to taste.

in about 1969 we went to Chihuahua on a family vaca. My parents ordered beers at an outdoor cafe. the waiter brought beers in bottles with glass mugs and lime and salt on the side. they commented to their friends that this is how beer is consumed in Mexico and they loved it that way.

i sneaked away and bought cigarettes.....;)

Anybody know for sure?

I heard somewhere that "Key" limes are the ones grown in the Florida keys and could only be called that if they were actually grown there. The same fruit grown elsewhere had to be called by one of it's other names. Not sure if that is still the case...

Kinda like Vidalia onions and Roquefort cheese. Only cheese that is produced in this certain place in France, with milk from a certain breed of sheep can be called that. Everything else is bleu cheese.

Thanks for that, DanO. I looked around for it but, I should have asked you first. You're better the Google.

That is how I started drinking it back in the early 80's. Corona was awful, but with lime was drinkable. I then found Tecate, but continued to put lime in it. Funny, I would never think about putting lime in an MGD or a Bud, but Tecate without it, well I can't think about it.
