Whale watching in GN

nailbender - 10-30-2009 at 12:25 PM

In the Mid of Feb I plan on taking my adult daughters for a small get away. Both want to go to GN for some whale watching. Please recommend a motel or hotel and also tour groups or expeditions in the area. Thank you

Jens

Malarrimo's is the best. Motel, restaurant & whale watch.

IMHO San Ignacio is a lot nicer for watching...and Ignacio Springs B and B is really nice and quaint..check it out on the internet; you'll like it.

www.kuyima.com

the drive from town to the lagoon will rattle you to death though.
sign up for the all day tour and take their van RT from town.

let it get trashed instead of your car.

plus you can drink.

In my opinion, alot would have to do with how much time you have. We crazies have done Guerrero Negro whale watching in a three day weekend-like President's Day. The town of San Ignacio is 90 miles beyond Guerrero Negro and the lagoon is about three times farther from the town.

That said, we've made many whale trips to the three most visited places (including Magdelena bay).

Guerrero Negro is a bigger town than San Ignacio. It has a bank and ATM which San Ignacio does not. It also has more accomodations available and more restaurants. Aside from the aforementioned Malarrimo, two other choices, both of which we have stayed in, are Los Caracoles, and the Cowboy Hotel. In the case of all three, arrangements can be made at the front desk for a whale tour.

However, I have to confess that the most exciting adventure we've had was at San Ignacio.

So, it boils down to how much time, and what level of ammenties are required.

and GN is an ugly town, and SI is a pretty town. really, GN is just about one of the ugliest industrial towns in Baja. except for malarimmos, the motels in GN are pretty ugly and undesirable.

Cowboy motel in GN is nice and has trips to the lagoon where the Interpretive Centre is which is lovely and has a great whale viewing deck and restaurant.

But I highly recommend NOT going on Pres. Day weekend...it's a zoo...if you do make sure you have good reservations.

goat- I never said GN was a beautiful town. From my perspective, it is elevated by the fact that Southbound travelers have just spent many hours driving through nowhere. It therefore becomes an oasis by happenstance. There are a number of very undesireable "hotels" there, as well. But Cowboy and Caracoles are good enough for most anyone. Have you stayed at them? Cowboy, in particular is quite charming architecturally.

And yes, San Ignacio is a beautiful town by comparison. I've had several wonderful evenings at fiestas at the zocalo. But, I stand by my original post as far as amenities go. There's more for the tenderfoot in GN.

And yes. I got the impression that it was that weekend that was being considered. Not only crowded at the lagoon, but accomodations along the way are strained, especially by tour operators. You will definitely not walk in and find a room in Catavina, for instance.

Really un-nice things to say goat... and the correct spelling is Malarrimo.
