Rosarito mariachis?

SDRonni - 11-3-2009 at 06:09 AM

Our Canadian guests would like us to take them somewhere in Rosarito for dinner where mariachis play. Since it's during the week, do any of you know such a place that would be safe? Or is it prudent to be back to our residence before dark?

noproblemo2 - 11-3-2009 at 06:26 AM

I don't know about the mariachis, however common-sense would suggest as has been stated numerous times before here on Nomads, to not be out driving after dark in Mexico.

Looks like current events have completely terrorized you, Ronni. That's a shame. What "Don't drive at night" means is don't drive where you don't belong at night.
If there are Mariachis playing in Rosarito centro, go enjoy them. If they're playing five miles out the La Gloria road, don't.
Let common sense be your guide....not fear.

Ronni.....check your u2u

Cyanide41 - 11-3-2009 at 08:02 AM

Ronni, you never go out at night living in Rosarito?? That seems crazy! That's gotta be tough with the sun setting at 5pm these days. When people says don't drive at night in MX, I am pretty sure they are refering to poorly lit rual roads that you are unrfamiliar with. I don't think anyone would tell you that driving in downtown Rosarito after dark is a real threat. Obviously driving anywhere in the dark is not as safe as it is in full daylight.

The Gull - 11-3-2009 at 08:16 AM

In the daylight you can go to the few restaurants that are still open during the day in Puerto Nuevo. In the daylight, you can ask which restaurants know of Mariachis who play during the week.

In the daylight, you can go to the major hotels and few remaining large restaurants in Rosarito and ask the same questions.

Since you live on the outskirts of Rosarito, you should have all the time in the world on your hands to get out and learn about your environs, during the daylight.

If those seem like too daunting tasks, then you should go to La Vuelta and ask if Mariachis play on the night that you want to go out. La Vuelta is located on the corner where Avenida Revolucion changes into Aqua Caliente in TJ. In the daylight, you can find the place and park in their very limited parking lot for free. While you are there, you can have lunch.

Otherwise, order pizza delivered from Rosarito and turn on the local radio for your friends.

No one goes out at night in Rosarito except the few tourists looking for something that is open. It's a virtual ghost town.
If you were to stay at Puerto Nuevo and wander over to the village for food and mariachis you'll be just fine. If you stay at the RB Hotel there would likely be mariachis on site somewhere (call the front desk).

Whatever you do- do not drive the free road from Rosarito to Puerto Nuevo at night. It's probably a safe enough drive except if you follow the painted road lines around Calafia you'll be in trouble.

Just did last week, no problems......no worse than driving in Reno after dark

why radio? Sirius satellite has an "All Maricahi" channel I torture my neighbors with on Sundays. And why pizza? TJ Juniors delivers fish tacos to your door. Or have Pollo Asil deliver hot char-broiled chicken. (But if you do order pizza- use Virgilio's)

We live in Rosarito. We got out for lunch often- but "order-in for dinner when the cook has the night off at home. :)

Or, if you want the full ambiance, order Mexican food.

OK...Woooosh already touched on that idea.

Maybe they re-aligned the lane lines finally... hope so.

That's a good idea! Go familiarize yourself with the area before hand, find out the good spots and then return later for dinner.

Whoosh, you reported "Sirius satellite has an "All Maricahi" channel I torture my neighbors with on Sundays."

Now share with all of us the channel number or be known as a liar.

I don't see it either although there are some interesting south of the border music channels.

Anyway, Gull, you should be enjoying something like 195. Turn it up for YOUR neighbors if you want to pay them back for something.

wow. liar. Hmm.

I get the "All Mariachi" on Channel 876. This is the satellite DirecTV Sirius/XM music channel I pipe through the whole house, but not until tomorrow :)

I think I can save us a few back-and-forths by stating we may both be correct (well- except for the liar part)...

I get Sirius channel 876-Mariachi (surrounded by: channel 875- Hurbano and Channel 877-Carnaval Brasileiro) through my DirecTV Satellite. That channel may or may not not be available on a Sirius receiver.

You wrongly assumed Sirius only broadcasts by satellite on the equipment you have to receive it. Apparently they do multiple broadcasts or you just aren't paying for enough channels. :)

That liar thing still stings... I deserve one of your stars for that. Moderator! Never mind- I didn't realize I already had more stars than you..

Yeah...Sirius in my car only goes to 821. Oh well..... I have CDs.

Vince's Seafood Grill

Gypsy Jan - 11-7-2009 at 02:52 PM

One or two blocks north of the Rosarito Beach Hotel on the same side of the street.

Great food and the wandering minstrels pull up there day and night. It is a huge space, so any number of musicians can be easily accommodated.

Call Vince's and someone will know how/who to get in touch with a group that will wow your guests. If you don't have the phone number, I will happily volunteer to look it up for you.

Good food, middle price range, usually a band on stage weekends. The Upstairs seating with outdoor terrace is nice and you can keep an eye on your car while you eat.

You can pick out your fish at the retail market side and they will prepare it for you (doesn't have to be deep fried). You can also pick a lobster from the display tank- but it will cost over double what the lobster dinner on the menu goes for (we had a friend pick one out and get bit by the check.

"You Can Keep an Eye on Your Car"

Gypsy Jan - 11-7-2009 at 04:39 PM

"While parked."

Yes, a very big plus, it is such an automatic precaution with us, I forgot to mention it.

Thanks Woosh!

Driving in the dark in Rosarito is ten times safer than driving anywhere after dark in L.A..

Road Report

The Gull - 11-8-2009 at 09:11 AM

Driving south of Popotla to Primo Tapia on the "libre" is easy and without road hazards.

Driving south below Popotla to Primo Tapia on the "cuota" is not as nice.

alafrontera - 11-8-2009 at 06:54 PM

Note to self; Don't go to Rosarito for the nightlife.

Do they really roll up the carpets at dusk? I was planning to spend a night there soon but maybe not after reading this.

There is Plenty of Nightlife in Rosarito

Gypsy Jan - 11-8-2009 at 08:06 PM

If that is what you want, for more information, just search the net using key words.

BTW, the exotic dancers,(cough, hookers) are licensed and regulated and must show up the the medical clinic near El Nido Restaurant for regular tests for HIV and. probably, at other locations, I just cannot say anything about that.

Yes, Jan, but are there Mariachis with them?

Some may remember the joke that was circulating in the sixties:

Service man in a foreign country was interested getting some action from a local street walker. During the negotiation, because of her accent, he couldn't tell if she said she had VD or had TB. The other guys suggested if he chased her around the room and she coughed, she was safe.

Well, thank Gawd for that. Practitioners of their trade haven't always been known for their high fibre diet.

Or what?

Never been to Rosarito (for this anyway) but if it's like TJ you can check, they carry a card. Of course if you don't have the scanner to read it...

The advantage to staying in the major clubs with reputations to worry about ( Adelita Bar, Hong Kong, etc ) is that they are self policing, they won't let a girl work if her card isn't current. They are tested every three weeks for a full panel of STD's and TB. IMHO it's lot safer than picking up some drunk chick in a dive bar

[Edited on 11-10-2009 by alafrontera]

That's comforting

Not that I would care.

Are Mariachis checked?
