I decided to try casting a heavy lure with my new outfit so I dug around in my tackle box looking for something that looked like a mullet (Rooster fish candy). I settled on a 6oz Tady Jig in green and white and tied it on knowing full well that a serious screw up would result in my lure and probably my leader flying off into the sunset.....no worries, I've got more...

I took a few practice tosses to build my confidence, loaded the quad and drov....I mean walked down the beach in search of the ever elusive Rooster Fish. I was South of Rancho Leonero when I passed Gary from the hotel rid...I mean walking the other way. He is the "Rooster Fish Guru" around here. A bit farther down the beach I spotted a school of large fish, tossed out the lure and was immediately hooked up. It was a big fish and after an impressive run he was able to toss the lure. I headed back up the beach looking for them to no avail but I did run in to Gary soaking a couple of mullet (I hate guys that can throw a cast net). I stopped and we chit chatted a while when we saw some fish approaching. One of them grabbed his bait and he handed me the rod saying "Go ahead and reel im in mate, I've caught hundreds of them....(not sure if I love him or hate him). After a spirited battle I landed a nice 25lb Jack Creval.

Gary had to head back to the Hotel so I rode...I mean walked on down the beach. I spotted some more fish, threw out and was hooked up again. After a spirited battle with what looked like the previous fishes twin I was holding him in the surf while trying to get my camera and he managed to escape.....I know, I don't get credit for this one....I made a few more casts and managed to catch a "fun size" Rooster and figured I would call it a day

When I got home Mi bonita esposa Jilliana was taking a batch of Snickers Bar ice cream out of the mixer....

Please try not to hate me, I worked hard for this.....dt

Yo DT...if you're gonna catch and release roosters try a single hook on your lures. Way mo better. Gamakatsu Siwash is a fine choice.

C-Man...I don't THINK he was intentionallyreleasing fish.:lol: Or am I just missing a carefully crafted poke, by you, to his ribs. 'Course I'm talkin' out my hat. In that one story alone he hooked three times more Gallos than I ever have!

one of my fantasies ( !!! ) is to catch (and release?) a rooster fish. it is one of the most beautiful fish in the sea.

Vgabgndo...that was no poke. Just an observation. Single hooks do far less damage. Roosterfish are amazing critters, worthy of respect. If you're gonna play with them and release it's best to not rip them up too bad with trebles. That is of course unless the plan is to bonk one to eat!

I tried a single hook on the same lure that I caught the rooster on a few days ago. I had lots of hits but no hook ups. I changed to a treble and managed to catch 1 out of 5 or 6 hook ups. These were Lady Fish mostly, they have hard mouths and get really acrobatic to throw a lure. Had 1 Rooster bite and nailed him. No damage, no issues, he's out there waiting for you.

Yes, treble hooks may cause more damage than a single hook....but then again, maybe not.

I can't remember the last fish that I killed that I didn't intend to eat.......dt
