Educate the New Guy?

alafrontera - 11-7-2009 at 05:47 PM

Hi folks, I wanna start getting my feet wet. As I said in another thread I have driven to San Felipe before and will be doing so again in a few weeks. I am also going to PV (by air of course) in January. Somewhere in between I'd like to take maybe 3 days and drive down 1, maybe no farther than El Rosario. Do I even want to go there? Would I be just as happy stopping somewhere closer? Is there any reason to even pass Ensenada if I'm not going "all the way" (it's my first time you know;)).

I have an AWD van I camp out in, have all the necessary gear. I like to fish too, surf fishing is fine.

C,mon, help out the new kid

Oh it doesn't have to be camping out either, cheap hotels wrk just as well for me ;D

dtbushpilot - 11-7-2009 at 05:53 PM

3 days isn't much time for camping, does that include your driving time?

If you were in SF right now, you'd probably get everything wet. It's the Shrimp Festival and that's major party time for all ages.
Mark it on next year's calendar.

It's not about camping, I just want to make the trip. 3 days drive time included, just to look around a little.

How about Guadalupe Valley...B&B...winerys...fresh air....nice drive....all that stuff. You don't have enough time to go any farther.

DENNIS - 11-7-2009 at 07:14 PM

Or Tecate. Did you ever spend any time in Tecate except to pass through?

noproblemo2 - 11-7-2009 at 07:34 PM

If you just want to start, try beach camping areas in La Mision. 45 minutes south of the border, then you can really get to know the area, do the same thing in other areas also on 3 day ventures, giving yourself space to find what you will like.

noproblemo2 - 11-7-2009 at 07:36 PM

El Rosario is too far to go and explore with a 3 day time frame...

alafrontera - 11-7-2009 at 07:43 PM

Dennis, I get the shakes whenever more than a mile or two from the sea  I once took a job in Atlanta, had to drive all the way to Myrtle Beach on the wekends :o

Now this La Mission idea... that's the sort of talk I wanna hear. Places I don't see on the map.

Again, it's not necessarily about camping, I could be happy with a night in Rosarito and a night in Ensenada, then stop to see the g/f in TJ on the way home ;)

Just fishing for ideas here, places to go to get some immersion time, practice my Spanish, etc ...

noproblemo2 - 11-7-2009 at 07:45 PM

La Mision is half way between Rosarito & Ensenada... Nice area

alafrontera - 11-7-2009 at 08:08 PM

Beach camping? Day trips into both towns? Sounds perfect, where do I find info on the place?

Heading out for the night now, will check back tomorrow. Thanks all.

Not gonna make El Centro tonight, I have a date. I'm sure I'll get plenty "wet" under the cold shower I'll be taking when it's over :(

alafrontera - 11-8-2009 at 01:10 AM

12:07 AM, should have gone to El Centro. Cold shower here I come

So True, If you'd gone to El Centro, you'd be there by now! Hope the shower helped:lol:

bajaguy - 11-8-2009 at 07:55 AM

Try LaJoya beach camp in/on Punta Banda, just south of Ensenada

Plenty of places to eat, beach camping, fishing and Nomads!!!

Hi Alafrontera,

I have many photos of places in Baja that are of interest (beaches, mission ruins, petroglyphs, palm canyons, etc.). I have made a page of links to those photos grouped by region. For example, you asked about El Rosario... there is a ton of interesting sites and a nice beach near there... Two great motels (Baja Cactus, Tourista), lots of eating, nice folks (see local artist Hugo at Tacos la Mision)... Three days is plenty of time to experience El Rosario and area attractions for the first time (5 hours from the border).

Click on the photos in any region I have covered to have a look before deciding... on this page:

Links to Baja Locations: http://community-2.webtv.net/vivabaja/tours

(this link is below all my Nomad posts, as well)

Have fun!
David

PS... these are the points of interest in my El Rosarion list of links, you will see photos of:

El Rosario Area

Missions, Museum, La Bocana, La Lobera

Cactus Garden and Sauzalito mine ruins

Petrified Forest & La Bocana Beach

El Camino Real near Km. 80

Las Pintas Fossil Grotto

Los Martires to El Socorro, cactus forests, petroglyphs found!

Mision San Fernando and petros '05

Mina de San Fernando (plus mission and petros in '00)

El Marmol & El Volcan

Agua Dulce historic spring (plus Baja Cactus Motel)

Mama Espinoza Museum & Search for Santa Ursula

To Punta Baja and down the coast road

I think alafrontera might be interested in this piece of baja history also. Easy reach from La Mision in the north or Punta Banda in the south

Ensenada Cultural Center

http://www.tjamigos.com has the full scoop on other cultural venues in Ensenada.

I am shocked, SCHOCKED, that you gentlemen would think this is the sort of thing I was looking for. Then again, I suppose it isan opportunity to continue the tireless and selfless work I have begun in Tijuana; teaching English and helping to advance the economy along Calle Coahuila.

As I do consider myself to be an ambassador of sorts when visiting foreign soil and do feel a certain obligation to contribute whatever I can to help advance those less fortunate than mself, I suppose I could manage to carve out a little time from my (now) camping/ fishing/ sightseeing trip to do whatever I can for the local population.

This is what is so great about the internet, a place where people can come together to share their knowledge of such opportunities to provide service and contribute to the cultural exchange that is so important for the future of world peace.

Thank you gentlemen, I will remember you fondly when I make this trip.

bajaguy - 11-8-2009 at 01:01 PM

This sounds like Fishbuck without an airplane.........maybe these two should team up???

Timo1 - 11-8-2009 at 01:07 PM

EXACTLY what I was thinking terry

My God, the $#its getting deep in here. Where'd I leave those boots?

alafrontera - 11-8-2009 at 04:51 PM

Thinking about this, and with this new insight on cultural exchange opportunities available in Ensenada, I have formulated a plan. Rather than wait I think I will skip Tijuana Tuesday this week, (yes tears will be shed but I will make it up to her), and maybe Friday morning drive to la frontera, park on the US side, walk across and take the bus to Ensenada. Think of it as a scouting mission. I'll pick a hotel for the night and return the next day. This will give me a chance to check out places to drive to next time, mostly want to find a hotel/ motel with secured parking in a fun area. Then next trip I will take the van and do some exploring, look at campsites, etc. With any luck I might have SENTRY by then, my interview is this Thursday.

This is only the first of what I hope to be many trips venturing beyond TJ, think of it as baby steps ;D

At this rate we'll need a shovel too!!!!!!!!

bajabass - 11-9-2009 at 08:05 AM

Drive straight to La Fonda in La Mision. Great camping, surfing, fishing. Several things to do, a few good places to eat, and cultural centers 30 minutes north or south. Anything you can do to spur the local economy into action would be great for all parties concerned!:o

k-rico - 11-9-2009 at 08:22 AM

Take some extra money. Things are a bit more expensive in Ensenada compared to TJ.

Also, you might want to wait until the next weekend, or plan to go again. The Baja 1000 is 19-22 Nov. Ensenada will be rockin'.
