i took it apart and it seems that the gear (steel, not brass) that is attached to the handle and engages the brass gears has busted. it doesn't come
through at a 90 degree angle anymore and is loose. i can't figure out how to get the gears loose from the housing.
any ideas on repair cost or should i just upgrade to a $50 used reel somewhere? this one and rod cost me $30. it was great for yellowtail to 20-25
pounds, but 35-40 pound YFT was too much after 4 or 5 wanna-be gorillas.... the date stamp on the housing says 11/92 !!!
all in all it has already paid for itself, but being the all time cheap bastard that i am, well, you know.....

Used reels are cheap these days but can always need repairs also.

99% of the time it's this part that gets damaged when reel is subjected to heavy stress. Look for any chips in those edges. Most tackle shops carry
this part for less than $10. Can't go wrong with a 4/0 - only you won't be doing any casting with it.

You can cast an iron or a mac with a 4/O just fine. Your in a panga, you don't need to through it 100 yards. You may spend some $ on that 4/O someday,

People have caught HUGE fish on 4/O's. It takes skill and luck, just like all fishing. Really, just keep good drag washers in it, and good line on it,

If the reel is not spooled, I would spool it with 65 spectra and about 150' of 50 lb mono.
Alternately use straight 50 lb mono but if you keep this reel as long as the 500, your mono will curl.
This reel can easily handle a 40-50 lb fish stock; with carbonex drags it could go 20 lbs higher.
Of course, a good fisherman in a panga should be able to boat almost anything with that reel.msteve1014 - 11-16-2009 at 07:05 PM
Spectra is a pain in the a**. a "casual" fisherman will be much happier without it. A good guide will not let you get 250 yards of line out of a

4/0 is the perfect baja reel. Bought two of them on Ebay, one for $58 delivered and one for $70 delivered, both in like-new condition. Made sure I
got the 4/0 "Special" with graphite frame and aluminum spool.
4/0 is so, so much better than the 500 jigmaster - no comparison. But, since I have a 500, I always bring it along as a back up. I love all my penn
reels, 6/0, 4/0, 500 Jigmaster, Squidder 140. I love a reel that I can rebuild from scratch myself that's why I stick with Penn's older reel models.
Wanted to get a "baja Special" but they were hard to find and way too expensive for me. I often wonder why a company creates a winner that everybody
wants and then discontinue it.
I am very cheap. I fill all my reels with 60lb dacron for at least the first 100 yards. Mono is expensive, I only use Ande line, so, if I can use
something close to unbreakable such as dacron to fill the initial yards of line in the spool and then use expensive mono for the last 50 to 75 yards
only (and always use a fluocarbon leader of 2 ft), I can get alot of mileage out of a quarter pound spool of Ande.
