My turkeys went on a field trip to work with me yesterday.
The children loved them.
Staying stateside for Thanksgiving this year. We're not eating our two friends, but looking for someone to take care of them over the Christmas/New
Year holiday when we will head south.

Lots of drumsticks in our neck o' the woods, and you can have all you can catch/shoot! nasty buggers.....roaming around, getting on the
deck....pooping EVERYWHERE.......
wild turkey is a nice concept, but only really enjoyable when it comes from a bottle.
Now those youngsters.........THEY are PRECIOUS! It's easy to forget the wonderment of youth. Our neighbor was over yesterday with his 3 yr old girl.
She was ooo-ing and ahh-ing over an invasive thistle weed. "It's so pretty, I LOVE thistles". It was a nice reminder of the world through the eyes
of a child.
And so, on that reminder to myself, here's my edit to my post-
Those domestic turkeys behind the fence look mighty sweet. I have some wild turkeys behind glass I'll share with anyone in the neighborhood.

They probably could jump over or fly out, but ours didn't attempt it. We put them inside the fencing in our backyard to test it out a week prior to
their adventure to school. They didn't make any attempt to escape what so ever.
Our birds are also very tame, have never tried to fly out of our yard, or roost in the many trees that we have. They seem to be happy on the ground
or on patio benches (or trying to sneak into the house to eat the dog food or hang out in the den).
They'd rather be with people then to be alone, be it with adults or children. They seem to seek out company, even with passers by when out in front of
our house. Most people are alarmed when they see two large birds running towards them rather than away from them.
The turkeys loved the children. The hen would make her chirt sounds when the classes would leave them. When the next group of children would arrive
they would settle down, fluff and parade, eat and drink water, stand close to the edges so the teachers could pet them.
No escape artists here.
They are our pets. If you put your (well behaved) pet dog in the fenced in area it would more than likely stay, just as our turkeys did. If the dog
jumped out and ran away, away from it's family and food source, then that would be a stupid dog.

Our little ones, 18 mo. to 3 years, don't get it. We sing our Thanksgiving songs and chants, some of them we substitute the word chicken for turkey,
but it doesn't really make a difference. If they understood they were eating a"Turkey" they would think the same thing about eating chickens, or cows,
pigs or fish. I don't really believe that recognition comes along until much later.
In the 28 years I've been teaching little people I've never had a child that came to me with that question.
Our school goes to 8th grade. I didn't hear anything from the other teachers in regards to negative reactions from their children. Perhaps a few of
them might think about asking their moms for tof-urkey instead, I don't know. Maybe I'll hear about it after the holiday.
"Big Guy" does have some meaty drumsticks, that's for certain.
