Best place to camp in San Quintin?

cpinkviv - 11-21-2009 at 03:58 PM

Any suggestions for camping in the San Quintin area? Does Cielito Lindo still have camping next to the motel? It needs to be secure with bathroom facilities. we don't need hook-ups.

Thanks in advance!

David K - 11-21-2009 at 04:03 PM

How about El Pabellon on the beach...just a short ways past the Cielito Lindo road... or the new RV park next to Jardines (about Km. 2)?

noproblemo2 - 11-21-2009 at 05:02 PM

Posada Don Diego......

Pescador - 11-21-2009 at 05:22 PM

I seond El Pabellon. Cleanest restrooms in that area. Our favorite stop for sure. I used Cielito Lindo for a few years, but until they opened up the beach area, it sometimes got a little noisy because of proximity to the restaurant and bar. Guess it all depends on what kind of experience you are looking for since they are both very different.

Fred - 11-21-2009 at 05:40 PM

Which El Pabellon? Did they not split the camp grounds into 2 seperate places.

BigWooo - 11-21-2009 at 05:51 PM

I haven't felt comfortable camping at Pabellon for the last few years, nothing has happened to us, but we just don't feel comfortable there now. Also there was a Nomad who had an incident in, or around the camp recently. Can't find the post.

For overnighting, we stayed at the campground next to Jardines recently. It was very clean, hot water, and secure. The guy that owns it is really nice. Best part is walking over to Jardines for dinner. If we have to spend the night in that area this is where we will stay.

Thanks for the info and link. Do you know what they charge per night? Thanks for your help.

What is the condition of the road to the RV park? I have a 30 foot class A that I hate to bring down real rough roads. Dirt and potholes are OK, hate the washboard.

woody with a view - 11-21-2009 at 08:18 PM

posada don diego has a GREAT road about 1/2 mile from the hiway. GREAT restraunt and hook ups!

BajaGringo - 11-21-2009 at 10:01 PM

I recommend Los Olivos or the bay peninsula strip. Not easy to get to but I haven't heard of anybody having any trouble down there. Great fishing from the point too...

Curt63 - 11-21-2009 at 10:26 PM

I stayed at Los Olivos last month. It was pristine and very secure. $17 for 2 nights (Truck and trailer).

The dirt road in to Los Olivos is only about 1 mile long and it was surprisingly free of washboard on our trip. But that was in August, and it is a dirt road...

I don't think you'd hate it in your big rig Howard, but maybe someone else can give you a more recent washboard report.

With only 6 RV spots they could easily fill up. For those of us who don't need hook ups, I'm hoping they can accomodate us parking near the grassy area if that occurs.

BajaGringo - 11-22-2009 at 09:17 AM

There are two roads that will take you from the highway to Los Olivos and both are in good condition. The north road that is marked The Old Mill probably is a bit rougher than the 2nd (south) road a bit further down that has the Jardines-Baja sign. Guillermo and his crew maintain that road and it is usually in excellent condition.

GC - 11-22-2009 at 09:36 AM

Two of us just stayed at Los Olivos on 1 and 12 Nov in truck campers. The price was $14 each on the 1st and 190 pesos each on the 12th. It is where I plan to camp in that area in the future.

cpinkviv - 11-24-2009 at 10:37 AM

Awesome, thanks for the info. It sounds like Los Olivos will foot the bill, especially since where we are going I will be cook for the rest of the trip. A good meal out is just what mom needs.:P

Do remember that Jardines restaurant is closed on Mondays. Los Olivos is really a beautiful spot ---close enough to the highway to be convenient, but far enough away to not hear the noise.

Have fun!

So, I take it no one knows the story about El Pabellon.

El Pabellon

olallabay - 11-24-2009 at 04:09 PM

Here is the story. The week of October 17th two couples parked thier rigs at El Pabellon (the northern one, not Felipes). Just after mid night one couple awakened in their trailer to find out they where underway. It appears that someone had stolen their pickup, with the trailer still attached. They roled out the door, and the truck and trailer pulled away. Their friends who had seen them pull out, picked them up and took them to the hospital for treatment and then the police. They got the trailer back but the pick up had not been found a week later. Pretty awful story, huh? Now here is the rest of the story, we found out a week after hearing this story from friends of the couple that they had left their truck unlocked and the keys in the ignition. No comment on that move required!

When I stayed there, there was a sign stating, you should lock your things up after dark. We ignored that, we've been to Baja over 200 times betwwen us. We had 2 chairs and, 1 boogie board stolen. Not a safe place. I would recomend the point Punta Almara or Cabo San Quintin 4x4 only. Best location in SQ.

Was that at Los Olivos or El Pabellon??

Diver - 11-24-2009 at 09:32 PM

Hmm, we have stayed at El Pabellon at least 7 or 8 times in the past 5 years and have never had a problem.
We do lock up at night and the 2 - 100 lb dogs sleep in the truck.

I think we will try Los Olivos next time though.
I'm wanting to try the food at Jardines !!

That stated above DID NOT happen at Los Olivos. Los Olivos is locked at night and has a fence around the entire property as well as a security guard that lives on site. We have never had any problems at our RV park.

We have HOT showers and are located one mile off the highway. We are next door to Jardines hotel and restaurant. Los Olivos is kept very clean. We have full hook-ups.

We also offer tent camping on the grass under the olive trees. Stop by and check us out. Thanks;D

I did not think it was your place---his post was not clear that he was referring to the other place.

We stay at Jardines quite often and have never had a problem even in the open parking lot-----your RV place looks very nice and we have suggested to several people.

Good luck---your place along with Jardines is a real oasis in the middle of the farm land.

How about a beach camping spot near San Quintin? Fenced camping is not what I'm looking for. I've stayed in the dunes near the La Pinta (or whatever its called) but hiding the car is a problem. Any funky places like Cielito Lindo that is on the beach?

Curt63 - 11-25-2009 at 10:06 AM

Marty, listen to Bajagringo...he's a local. If you have a high clearance 4x4 and want adventuresome beach camping he suggested the peninsula. It's beautiful!!!!!!!!!!

David K - 11-25-2009 at 10:16 AM

You can drive down the beach from Cielito Lindo or El Pabellon to the south where the giant sand dunes begin... Locals drive this beach for clam digging (even in 2WD sedans).

Next, would be to go out to La Bocana beach, 5 miles west of El Rosario. Some day use and some campers out there once in a while... Very beautiful beach.

EL ROSARIO to LA BOCANA (High Road)

0.0 mi. Turn Right off highway at the sharp bend in town.

Continue west passing by the road left to El Rosario de Abajo and Punta Baja.

0.8 mi. Fork, go right.

1.2 mi. Fork, go right... road heads uphill.

1.5 mi. Pass palapas and banana trees, climb hill.

2.2 mi. View point, see La Bocana beach.

2.6 mi. Go straight, left is a poor road.

2.9 mi. Fork, go left... Ahead is a locked gate.

3.0 mi. Fork, go left... Right is the entrance gate to Diamante Del Mar.

3.6 mi. Fork, go ahead/ left. Right is a poor road.

3.9 mi. Fork, go right, to the beach.

5.3 mi. La Bocana Beach

EL ROSARIO to LA BOCANA (Valley Road, 4WD)

0.0 mi. Turn Right (west) off Highway 1 at the sharp curve in El Rosario.

In about 100 yards, turn left on road for El Rosario de Abajo and Punta Baja.

Cross over El Rosario river culvert pipe and soon turn right in the river valley, some water crossings before reaching the south bank of the river and entering the town of El Rosario de Abajo.

1.5 mi. El Rosario Museum, on left. Photos taken inside at http://vivabaja.com/505/page6.html

1.6 mi. Rosario de Abajo mission ruins, on right.

2.5 mi. Road left for Punta San Antonio and the coast south of Punta Baja.

2.9 mi. Road left for Punta Baja, continue ahead (west).

3.1 mi. Turn right for La Bocana, deep water crossing soon.

4.2 mi. Come to a fence, turn left to opening then continue west, Deep sand ahead.

5.1 mi. La Bocana Beach

Here is a photo of the beach way south of San Quintin, up in the giant dunes, I mentioned earlier...

$14 seems a bit pricey. is that w/ hookups?
What's El Pabellon these days? - was $5 PP last winter.

This is a link to Los Olivos----some nice pictures and information.

Doesn't really answer your question, but they do have an e-mail.

I personally would avoid any remote camping locations in the San Quintin area. Too many violent attacks on campers in the past. That's why many of the pay campgrounds have 24 hour security guards and gates and fences.

I believe El Pabellon has a night security patrol? If you leave your easily grabbable stuff out on a public beach at night and your keys in the ignition well....

we went out there in july. there are numerous spots to camp and it is isolated, unless there is a swell;D.

bajafam - 11-25-2009 at 01:51 PM

We've camped in several spots along the Bahia. We just do the beach camp thing. The first time was along the bahia side, needed 4x4 to get in and out, but didn't see another person for the entire four days out there! The second time was on the ocean side, just past the main beach. It was much more crowded (some in and out traffic - it was the weekend) but only one other family of campers. We made friends with a lot of the locals on that trip!

Unfortunately, the last trip we went out that way, the beach road was deteriorated due to the collecting of the sea rocks. It was difficult to get out to our usual camp spot without going directly on the beach, and we had our friends following in a 2 wheel drive (and it was a definite no go for them).

BajaGringo - 11-25-2009 at 10:06 PM

If any of you decide to camp out on the peninsula, let me know. I am located just at the north end of the peninsula on the Pacific side and I will show you how a Cadillac Margarita is properly made...

San Quintin is an overnight pitstop for us. We roll in just before sunset and leave at sunrise. 50 pesos to sleep in our truck camper at Cielto Lindo using one of the vacant hook-up sites just inside the RV park. Weekend nights can be noisy.

We even boondocked behind the PEMEX at the Cielto Lindo turnoff one night in the winter when it was cold and raining to avoid the wet dirt at Cielto Lindo. Very convenient and safe, restrooms and coffee in the morning.

airmech - 11-27-2009 at 10:16 PM

I think I'm glad I didn't read this about bad guys in SQ before we left. Our trip to BOLA started late Saturday and we didn't make it to any of the places near Sta Roslia you all helpfully mentioned... We did roll in late to San Quintin. I didn't want to drive way south to the La Pinta area and then back up in the morning so I just found a spot towards the Old Mill on a side road and pulled in next to some trees. No problems. Stocked up on fresh veggies, seafood and fuel and headed out.
