Would you join BAJA NOMADS again....

 Pages:  1

surfer jim - 11-22-2009 at 06:36 PM

...if you weren't already a member?

Myself, I have been here "for a while" and have grown used to the now constant attacks, put downs, comments that have nothing to do with any topic and just destroy the flow of whatever thread is available....well, you get the picture.

I have read too many times when new people post how they are "put down" for not searching enough, that they are somehow "stupid" for asking something....and they never seem to post again....wonder why?

Very few times does anyone say "welcome to our group how can I help you"....wouldn't that be nice?

There are other websites that I "READ ONLY" just because I don't want to be part of the mess. I wonder how I would feel if I wasn't already here ....Would I join again?

WOULD YOU?......

Barry A. - 11-22-2009 at 06:44 PM

Yes------------and new members are ALWAYS greeted with welcome messages unless they introduce themselves here with bashing, or sarcasm. There are those who appear hostile, but this is true with any forum, it seems to me. The anoynimity of the net always brings out those who would be hostile----this has nothing to do with NOMADS, it seem to me.

bajalera - 11-22-2009 at 07:05 PM

What a strange question. It never occurs to me that posting here is the equivalent of signing up for something that needs to be evaluated.

grace59 - 11-22-2009 at 07:46 PM

Yes, I would join again, without a doubt. For years I simply read the posts on here....getting to "know" some of the people and learning through all the posts. There are definitely some negative folks on here...I've seen some personal attacks on people that I don't understand, but overall I find the people on here to be informative, funny, enlightening and just downright helpful. I'm glad that I'm a Nomad and would certainly join again.

BajaNuts - 11-22-2009 at 10:46 PM

There will always be nay-sayers in any situation. But when you look at the situation, maybe the nay-sayers will not be so important.

....some comments...........(sometimes, regrettably, from me...)..........some by many a long time Nomad member........are sarcastic, snide.........

SNARKY is a term I've heard recently and it is a good description that encompasses a lot of posts......

The search features are tweeky, and I have spent lot of time looking for a certain post. I don't think long-time Nomads should get snarky with newmads because they can't figure out how to work the site.

How many posts have there been about "how to post a picture"?

As I have seen when difficult situations arise, whether from the weather or from a person on the ground needing immediate assistance, the BajaNomad network is a great resource and should not be dismissed.

I believe most folks are just regular folks, whether they be NOB or SOB, 99.9% are willing, able and have already, helped their neighbor.

Welcoming a new member is probably an area that we can improve on. Navigating this site or any online forum site is a learning curve and let's not diss the newmad.

I have to agree with surfer Jim. I am very new at this. I love Baja and use to ask questions, but I was made to sound stupid so I don't ask many questions anymore. I do read the posts quite often but as far as posting, I'm a bit Leary for fear that I do sound foolish. Life is too short to be part of any drama..

A little drama can be fun.

About "asking questions that sound foolish", do you really think there is a motel in baja that charges $400 US per night ?

Sure, I'd join again, if not just for the laughs !!

LOSARIPES - 11-23-2009 at 03:28 AM

Yes, no doubt.
Just recently, I had a conversation with a bilingual real estate agent permanent resident in Baja and asked her if she was a nomad. Her answer was "No... I am not but my friend is and he gets ruffled once in a while... the folks in there are pretty aggressive aren't they?"....
Wow. I never thought we had such reputation...I guess we earned it.

JESSE - 11-23-2009 at 03:43 AM

IMHO, when you join bajanomad your attitude should be, "here i come, move aside" and not "will you let me in?"

Hearts on your sleeves

The Gull - 11-23-2009 at 06:40 AM

I would register just to read the extent of the whining on the board. Helps me feel better about the way I see the world.

All these people wanting to be victims in a country that doesn't adjust to them. Tough noogies - leave and hide in the US where the standards adjust to the lowest level all the time.

Most importantly I would join just to see the pictures of dogs and to read the prattle of the various mental midgets who attack David K.

[Edited on 11-23-2009 by The Gull]

rhintransit - 11-23-2009 at 06:54 AM

yes, of course. but despite years of 'membership' I still cringe occasionally when I post knowing that someone/s may attack, take something wrong, fault my spelling, simply misread and overreact, or generally spin off into the ether... and many times when I, and others, post something general, we are jumped all over for not 'spilling our guts' and revealing every little detail...this by people who are simply curious and not really interested (ie price of properties, details of products and services offered, etc etc etc). if they were seriously interested, a simple question or U2U would do.

"Yes------------and new members are ALWAYS greeted with welcome messages unless they introduce themselves here with bashing, or sarcasm." Barry A.
not in my experience of reading this for years. no wonder many simply disappear...

DENNIS - 11-23-2009 at 07:04 AM

The people who would say "NO", probably arn't here to read your question. Why would anybody hang around a place they didn't like?

YES!
I have been Beat Up. Stoned, Craped on, Maglined, Peed on, Spit on, and called all sorts of Names. Been Banned for a couple of times and still , Yes I would join, just for the sake of protecting my beloved Sea of Cortez from all the False Statements made about her!!

Com on Join up, don'T have an Opinion, Don't talk bad about David K., don't tell anyone if you beleive in a Supreme Being..

shari - 11-23-2009 at 08:19 AM

duh!!!!! heck ya...we have made sooooo many lifelong friendships from this site and had alot of fun playing in the nomad sandbox...even with the bullies, over reactors, snotty noses, self righteous, insulting, nasty kids...it's all part of life...waht doesnt kill me makes me stronger...we all are one....the groovy nomads far outweigh the negative ones. We have all had our moments...but I do wish people would be a tad nicer and treat everyone with respect and dignity...(like THAT'S gonna happen )

Oh and by the way...a big ole hearty welcome to any newmads who I forgot to welcome...and a slobbery kiss to all those lurkers out there( be brave comrades and jump into the fray)...you know who you are!!!:cool::rolleyes:;)

SDRonni - 11-23-2009 at 08:24 AM

Yep, sure would! We have met folks on here who have become our friends and now our neighbors! Took a few licks early on, but didn't get my panties in a bunch about it!

bajafam - 11-23-2009 at 08:28 AM

Thanks for the welcome and btw, I enjoy reading the posts, snarky or not, and I put in my two cents here and there. I look forward to adding more to the conversations in the future. As far as forums go, I don't think that the Nomads are any more or less aggressive with their posts. I am a member of a "mom" site and you should read the things that those "ladies" write on there!

wilderone - 11-23-2009 at 08:34 AM

Yes - once someone finds this forum, they know it is the best direct info on Baja, CA. Most forums - not a Q&A site - include personalities, as in real life, that sometimes aggravate. It's an extension of being a human. I don't condone such behavior, but to expect politeness at all times that doesn't reflect who a person really is, is not realistic.

However, now that some of the long-time posters here know that they can turn off a newbee, maybe we can ease up a little on occasion.

yes!

Dianamo - 11-23-2009 at 08:57 AM

I am grateful to all whom offer advice and answers. I hope that my post help and never deride. When I was a newbie I felt embarrassed by a few questions I posed, but I soon learned that most Nomads were here to help no matter how I asked.

Thanks for all the wisdom that is shared!

David K - 11-23-2009 at 09:04 AM

Like any big family, there are ones who like to argue or act superior...

Try and provide good answers whenever you can... or offer help or links to show the way. I know the newbies aren't familiar with the Nomad Search engine at the top of the page, left side... Heck, many old Nomads still don't know how to use it! Until they do, help them with a link or an answer.

I do try to add a welcome note if I notice it is a new Nomad posting... and I always try to thank Nomads when they post TRIP REPORTS... which is the most valuable item here, in my opinion.

The attacks can get tiresome, but if your desire to share with others... or to learn something new is great, then you won't let the bullies chase you away.

Come to Nomad to get what you need for a great Baja adventure or daydream material, and when you have a story to share or some other 'gift' from your experiences, please share it here.

If you have a choice to make a friend or to make an enemy, why pick anything other than to make a friend...?

Carry On!:light:;D

Most nomads, I think, focus on about 10 posters that they either know or enjoy reading, and the remainder are just passed over.

backninedan - 11-23-2009 at 11:43 AM

Would I join again? Yes. Is it as much fun as it used to be? I don't think so. Maybe it's the downturn in the economy or even changes in baja itself.

Wow, you think?? I truly hope not. I try to read every original post, but often fall by the wayside when they drift from my main interests------I am interested in everything Baja, but mostly the backcountry stuff, I admit.

NOMADS is the best source of info on Baja that I am aware of. That fact alone keeps me coming back.

Neal Johns - 11-23-2009 at 11:54 AM

Count me in! I skulk around a bit because I am not getting down there as much as I would like so have little to post.

And of course, my WiW's keep me busy.:lol::lol:

Bajahowodd - 11-23-2009 at 11:55 AM

Many fine responses to what is seemingly a moot point. Of course this forum is a valued resource. Of course, it is a true affinity group. And with the exception of Off-Topic, I am of the belief that much of what may be observed as arguing would better be described as good-natured verbal jousting. I'd bet that despite differences in background, political point of view, lifestyle, religion, Etc., 99% of the folks posting here would enjoy having a cerveza with each other. It's about Baja, stupid!

You've got a point about the experience getting a bit dull at times. Perhaps it's because most, not all, of the topics brought up and discussed are in a cyclical pattern. What may be hashed over ad nauseum today will reappear as a new thread in the not too distant future. Immigration law, visas, illegal immigration, the border, crime, property rights, etc. Trip reports are unique, to somebody anyway.
In absense of a qualified English language news source, Nomad is pretty informative for current events. It seems, somebody will do the research.

Anyway, thanks to all you Nomads for a great time. Being on here is easier than doing what I should be doing.

I have found this site to be very helpful and informative. I have learned who some of the negative indiviuals are and take anything they say in stride.

TBcountry - 11-23-2009 at 12:55 PM

Sure I would join again. I realize I haven't posted a lot but I have been coming here for quite sometime. I have met a few of you ( hi neighbor) and I do get some great info here. But I must say there's a few extremely negative people here and I was quite upset how a few responded to a post I made I couple of weeks ago. I believe MOST that come here LOVE Baja, but then again Baja Norte gets its share of bashers. I happen to be in South Rosarito and absolutely love it.

Aw c'mon, TB. The subject of your thread begged to be played with.
How are Charly's Angels doing anyway? Getting "things"all straightened out?

Skipjack Joe - 11-23-2009 at 01:07 PM

Another observations is: that the same people agree with each other and the same people disagree with one another. And I'm not talking about political viewpoints.

Those that disagree won't post until there is something to disagree about and then make their comment. And the reverse is true for those they agree with.

These 'alliances' really take away much from the board.

But I suppose that's just human character. Anyway, that aspect of the board is tiresome.

Packoderm - 11-23-2009 at 01:32 PM

Yes, I'd join again.

Probably a percentage of the caustic postings here comes from people who have had a few drinks and then visit this site. Some of the others might be gentrified prisoners of the cubicle realm who are frustrated with their suburban existence. Some of the others are plain jerks. As far as some of the expatriates, some are cool - Pompono comes to mind. Some are edgy and creative - Osprey. Some seem to be suffering from the results of some kind of disillusionment - no names given. It takes all kinds, but they summarily capture the gringo spirit of Baja. Some are big, some are small, some are in between, some are...

But, Igor, you read them. I've often wondered if nurturing a dislike for something wasn't an integral part of liking other things. :smug:

Osprey - 11-23-2009 at 02:31 PM

My analysts (the last two anyway) say I'd be crazy to leave the Nomad forum. Well, they didn't say it that way but you get the idea. They say my shy, introverted nature makes me want to turn my hostility inward toward self denigration. Posting on the board helps because it gives me a better, healthier, if you will, object to strike out at; lots of new posters, old ones I can rattle horns with. One day, if I can get past this particular phase I may be able to join those others who learn things here. In a way you're all part of my rehab, members of my medical team. I'm still a little edgy at times.

bajabass - 11-23-2009 at 02:37 PM

There are some very gracious and helpfull people here. There are some very rude, obnoxious people as well. That's our world. At least with my computer I can decide to partake in the good or the bad. Other than off topic, the tirades are humorous and mostly fun. I will have to say that there are those that post 99% negative crap, and blindly strike out at others. I refuse to play that game. I have gotten some great insight to Baja from many of the great people on this board, and gotten very angry at some others for the crap they attempt to drag us into. The trip reports and the photo gallery are at the top of my list, off topic, not so much:no:

Well, this has been so interesting that I'm thinking of joining.

Humboldt Chris and Robin - 11-23-2009 at 02:58 PM

I got trashed early on but in the grand scheme of things, this board is really friendly and I love it. On some professional boards, and a couple that have to with campers, people get flamed viciously!

Packoderm - 11-23-2009 at 03:05 PM

And to think - I joined mainly to get my typing skills back up to snuff when I went back to school. It's been a long, strange trip.

David K - 11-23-2009 at 03:09 PM

What do you think about Nomads who do a lot of 'chatting' (with each other or to other Nomads, ... or to nobody) but don't ever post some trip reports, photos, stories, advice, news, etc.?

There seems to be a few who only post replies for some 'drama', and have never contributed here with travel advice, living in Mexico advice, sharing their favorite places/ meals/ photos/ etc.

Again, just a thought... like a beer fund... people come here for the free stuff (info./ friendship/ drama/ typing practice), but don't 'chip in' with some useful posts ('beer money').

Do people seek out and read Baja Nomad because of some chit chat about who was at the local bar, or do they come here to find out about Baja California? Granted, they may come for one and then enjoy the other after!

I think this site is the richest source of Baja information because their are more people talking about Baja, and that will keep Nomad #1.

Packoderm - 11-23-2009 at 03:13 PM

David, I like both aspects of Nomad conversation. I forgot to add you to my description of the various Nomads: Some have a passionate thirst for knowledge of all things Baja and are generous in sharing such knowledge - David K.

Some completely crack me up - Fishbuck.

Some give us insight to what it is to be a baja californio - Jesse

Some we just love - Skeet, and Bajalera

Bajahowodd - 11-23-2009 at 03:23 PM

Ha! I saw the edit!! Problem occurs when we start singling people out, even for praise and even if well-deserved because there are going to be many folks left off anyone's list. Sure. There are some Nomads who contribute helpful and sometimes extremely important info. Others who dazzle with photos. Others who make me laugh (with them). Too many to list, and again, run the risk of accidently snubbing someone. IMHO

nbacc - 11-23-2009 at 04:07 PM

Yes, I would join again...I have learned much (good and the negitive) about Baja. I need to keep up on things as we don't go down often enough. Next year...for a month or two or more as retirement is on the horizon...YEA! Thanks to those of you who pass on important info. that we don have any other way of finding out like road conditions and so on. I post carefully though. I hope that someday I can pass on info that people can use.

So true. I tried to keep the list down to the prototypical as to not make others feel left out. Of course I had to edit in Bajalera. Anyway, is she married?

Most of the posters so far have been here longer term....I would hope some of the "newer" members will join in also.

Jim- No bar to joining. I think the problem right now has more to do with the bad press, the drug war, the economy. For so many years, it was so popular for kids to cross the border for a night of fun. Many of those kids grew up to feel curious about what lay South of TJ and Revolucion. Many eventually ventured farther South. Perhaps they found Ensenada. And perhaps, their curiosity pushed them farther South. Unfortunately, such is not the case right now. I fear that Baja is going to lose a generation of potential visitors. That saddens me.

We wouldn't have found him on our own, and the difference will have a great impact on our retirement finances and quality of life- no exaggeration.

Bob & Susan:
- We used Bob's great attorney referral to help resolve Profepa issues
- We got a deal on an inverter that Bob was selling for a friend.
- I've hit him up with "how to" questions, and my husband with solar/technical
stuff the past few years and he's a great resource and all around nice guy.

Russ: - We've been trying to get an environmental impact study done for nearly
5 yrs and have watched thousands of $$ go down the drain and were
led astray by several professionals. We're currently working with a
dynamo inginiero recommended by Russ who is getting the job done
and is one of the nicest guys around who we will most likely remain
friends with. Another invaluable referral by a nomad.

Morgaine7, Longlegsinlapaz, and oldlady: Our favorite ladies of La Paz who are
some of the best friends we've never met in person! Always generous
with their time to answer questions and provide guidance on a variety
of moving, building, and living in Mexico topics. Nice, smart, and funny
they are. We get to meet them in the near future.

I hesitate to go on because i don't want to leave anyone out who has also responded to u2u's and emails with advice and suggestions. There are many.

Then there's a list of folks we'd hope to meet someday and who will give us an excuse to visit places that otherwise would not have been on our radar: Paula & Don Alley, vandenburg, shari & Juan, Baja Gringo, for example.

Or maybe Bay of LA to see if soulpatch or Paulina & Dern are there. Go stargazing with Astrobaja, or bump into Mexitron while camping and pick his brain about plants, or catch Bajajudy taking a stroll at the estero.

We would have enjoyed Baja without a Baja Nomad, but it has definitely enriched the experience, so my answer is "yes".

Face it, folks..we're family. I'd go to war for any of you. In fact, I did.

Aw, you had to go and ruin it. Remember what they say, you can choose your friends, but you can't choose your family.

Anyway, I'm here because I don't have anything better to do, so sure, I'd do it again. On the other hand, maybe I should try therapy like George.

TBcountry - 11-23-2009 at 06:24 PM

And I THANK YOU for that David

bajabass - 11-23-2009 at 06:26 PM

Aww! This is giving me that warm fuzzy feeling. I'd join all over again. OK, enough warm and fuzzy, back to off topic and posts from a couple people that never make me feel that way.

BajaGringo - 11-23-2009 at 06:36 PM

Nomad is what is and we keep coming back. The friends I have made here are priceless; those who I have been fortunate to meet in person and all of you I am still looking forward to meet.

Yes, I would still join...

Ricardo - 11-23-2009 at 07:29 PM

Hi I started with Freds board and Amigos, Fred helped me with his info, The Amigos I just lurked around, Then Nomads, I just Lurked for years, posted a couple times and got pretty well slammed so Quit that. But the truth is I go here every day I can which is pretty well every day. Love it, Yeh I would join again. I really love the mind readers though. You post and they read your mind and fire their caustic comments (no matter how inaccurate)back at you.

Do it again?

Of course I would:tumble::spingrin::bounce:

To much to do before the Thanksgobbler feast.

So, this may be a redundant comment, but someone on the news today who is supposed to be an accredited media commentator (skepticism on my part, not sarcasm) stated that Oprah became a billionaire because her show created uplifting moments.

This makes sense to me.

Cheers and uplifting moments to all you Nomads,

GJ

Having just read this entire thread, I am having a Kum-bayaa moment right now. Whay shouldn't I, after all, I am a fire-breathing liberal.

This forum is the best. I've tried other forums and they just don't have the same esprit de corps that this one has.

This forum constantly blows me away with the depth of knowledge that so many Nomads have on every subject ever brought up. Believe it or not, there are some really high IQs floating around this forum (then there's the rest of us).

I have been dumped on and I have been a dumper as well.

I have uproariously bursted out in abrupt laughter at some of the funniest things that I have ever seen in print.

I have gotten all my questions answered here. Can't say that about anything or anywhere else I have been.

On this forum, you have to be well adjusted to really get what it has to offer. Be thick skinned, have a sense of humor, don't take yourself too seriously or you will go down in flames, be robust, contribute your posts and responses, don't be afraid to get into it with others, admit and apologize when you are wrong, constantly ask yourself if you are "over reacting", take your lumps and discipline yourself to NOT always have the last word, and by all means contribute your knowledge.

No I'm not, Pack, but my shelf life has pretty much expired.
And thanks to you, too, Skeeter old dear.

Outside of a few blowhard know-it-alls, this is a great place. We all have different experiences and opinions. It's great to learn from others as well as to share from our travels. Viva Baja Nomad.

At the moment I'm frowning but I'm still here. Nuff said.

About the chit chat thing...Baja nomad has been a useful and fun tool for many of the folks that have come through here. Many people ask us to please post fishing reports and updates on things here to keep them in the loop and this board is a great way for us all to keep in touch with each other without emailing everybody. We have become somewhat of a family and really enjoy each other's comments, support and just checking in.
What is funny is when a lurker shows up here and recognizes all the spots like the gypsy shed, juanita's kitchen etc and knows all the skinny even before they've been here. It's kind of unfair advantage though as they know lots about us and we know nothing about them!

bajaandy - 11-25-2009 at 07:54 AM

I may not post much anymore... I visit almost daily just to get my "fix", but I'd join up again. Glad I did in the first place.

DianaT - 11-25-2009 at 10:22 AM

It has been interesting to follow this thread---a really strange one. From the beginning, it almost sounds like once someone joins, there is no turning back. It is a forum, not a sentence. And even the things about Baja that some like are not shared by everyone---

Some like the travel to back areas and others want no part of it.

Some want to share the exact directions to everywhere, even the surf locations and others get really upset over that one.

Some want only the information about building and living there, some don't care at all about that

Some love it as a place to promote their businesses- free advertising--a real cash cow for some and a smart business move.

Some love the off-road part, and others want no part of it.

It is a good place to promote worthy charitable causes

A place to report to others about natural disasters and then argue about them.

A place to ask about restaurants and hotels, and then watch as there is seldom a consensus---and some are horrified that someone disagreed with them.

A convenient place to yell for help when needed

Some want to think of it as some kind of family---fits their needs. Lots of people are seeking a family through forum memberships.

And of course, a place to see everyone's dogs for all the dog lovers---that seems to creep into most forums, and even here, there are one's who complain about the dogs.

So, there is a lot of useful information, a lot of disagreement, and most is not much different that other forums----this one just happens to be somewhat about different aspects of Baja

----but what causes me to laugh are the posts on this thread that---

1. Want to limit how and what is talked about----to fit their own agenda

2. The posts that name call the posters they do not like because they don't agree with them----they would like to limit the opinions and politics of who joins.

3. The posts that think it is only "others" who get political, off-topic, hurt threads and are bad.

Just a lot of "it is the others" ----but that too, is like other forums----the others are always the problem

A place where some people do try to be friendly and nice (over and over)... while others want no part of that.

Exactly----another one of those, it is the others----always the others---

Thanks for the laugh and the great example of the blame the others post.

David K - 11-25-2009 at 10:41 AM

Why don't you like all people, Diane? I have tried to be friendly, and you just can't seem to get over the fact that we are different. That is a poor reason to dislike people, isn't it? Come on... stop the hate... life is too short!

Can't all Nomads just agree at least that we love Baja... it's a place to start negotiations afterall!? :light::D

norte - 11-25-2009 at 10:58 AM

David K.

I don't know you, but on this board you spewyour own brand of discontent. Maybe that is why I would sign up again. Its entertaining and if I don't like it, I can turn it OFF

I'm sorry DianaT, was that a yes or a no?

Skipjack Joe - 11-25-2009 at 11:12 AM

Great summary of reasons why people post here, Diane. A couple more:

1. The baja photos really help the rest of us feel and smell baja when we're not there. A really important contribution.

2. Then there's the Munoz thread. I don't know what category you'd put that soap opera into, but it's one of a kind.

I am very content... and I 'spew' information, positive thoughts, photos of Nomads getting together and having fun together... I am always trying to get us all to get along here... I only request that if some politics or false science is posted, the other side get equal time... that is fair isn't it?

I am a believer in

FREEDOM for all and

PUTTING people #1!

Ah, the turtle thread----that is in the soap opera category---goes on and on and little changes. Then again, it could be in the news debate category as it seems to be entertainment for some and for some, a chance to draw predetermined conclusions and then argue those conclusions without ever listening. Lots of those around, but this one wins a longevity award.

Packoderm---I am guilty---didn't answer the question asked---that is another typical forum thing. Answer, yes.
