COWBOY MOTEL- Guerrero Negro...and until now (drumroll here) the pictures and true stories of the hidden dirt.......

CasaManzana - 11-22-2009 at 08:08 PM

COWBOY MOTEL- GUERRERO NEGRO......the first motel you see on the south side of the road as you come into town. It''s new this year and in a quick location from Mex 1 to grab a sleep. They have 8 rooms @ $400/night for two persons. It was sold out by 6PM on this Sunday, but 4 more rooms are going to be on line by Christmas. Good Wifi in rooms, hot agua mucho, super clean, and quiet. The "dirt"...the 4 rooms being build have sand and gravel you have to deal with in the parking lot (courtyard parking a +). The restaurant attached to the motel is never open I hear, but the one next door, and without a name, is fantastic for all 3 meals. Cowboy has no a/c....hahahaha..tiny joke in GN, and no heat in rooms......not a tiny joke. Pix are from #2:

Duh, $400 pesos = $31.50 US; cheapskate !

Did you take the cellophane off the lamp shade? Fire hazard.

Would be nice of the curtains actually covered a window instead of the wall.

Duh, check the outside pictures and note the 2 small windows that are covered by the drapes.

And how do you know thats not fireproof plastic !! :P

Seems some folks are just looking for something to slam !
Such drama !

shari - 11-23-2009 at 07:58 AM

thanks for the pics...Chavelo, the owner is an old amigo of mine and is to be commended for his project. Goes to show ya, a poor guy from the Ejido can make good with some ambition...which chavelo always had. I remember him sharing his dream with me 20 years ago when all he had was a little sandwich cart at the ejido...he's come a long way baby.
He used to be the jefe at the Ejido whale watching company in Ojo de Liebre......say hi for me if ya stay there.

We have stayed there, and I have mentioned it on prior threads as a good value. It is one of the most architecturally appealing places in town. I'm curious about the reference to the restaurant. The one in front is the same ownership. It's called Asadero Cowboy, or vice versa. It IS only open for dinnertime. At least that's what we've encountered when in GN. The food is quite a bargain. The hotel filled the night we stayed, as well. As with a few of the better places in GN, with few rooms, during whale season, better reserve ahead.

dtbushpilot - 11-23-2009 at 04:58 PM

Anyone know if they are pet friendly?....dt

Bajahowodd - 11-23-2009 at 05:36 PM

Cannot say for sure. But, it is GN. Can't imagine they would be picky.

ncampion - 11-23-2009 at 06:33 PM

Stayed there a couple of weeks ago on our way down. Thought we would spread the wealth a little in GN. Despite the total lack of "customer service" from the mother breast feeding her baby and the 10 year old boy who actually took our money, the rooms were clean and spacious, except for the bathroom which was a bit cramped - eg, a one person room. The beds were comfortable and the pillows were like sacks of marbles (about average for Baja motels). They are "pet friendly" however they charged $50pesos additional for our dog. Overall, we would stay there again but it's no Baja Cactus.

dtbushpilot - 11-23-2009 at 07:59 PM

When we check in to a motel our usual ploy is to go to the office carrying our cute little Yorkie and ask if pets are OK. It's only after we get checked in that we carry the cat carriers to the room. We've had a few "looks" but never been challenged.

Must be; he started his cr@p after a few light-hearted comments from others.

Why didn't he just post the link to this thread for the inquirer like he normally does ?

I now fear that I may be in jeapardy of being labeled a "childish Nomad-hater" for adding my 2 cents. :P

Does anyone know if there's a way to make a reservation?

Bajahowodd - 2-9-2010 at 05:24 PM

As far as I know, they do not have a website. And even their listing on Bajaexpo.com is without a phone number. Shari would be the closest with any current info. Our own personal experience was that when we arrived there around 4:30, we were the only guests. a couple of hours later, it was full. So, I'm guessing that if you expect to hit town late, you may have to stay elsewhere. I guess an 8-10 room hotel doesn't need to advertise or be accessible. Just across the street is Los Caracoles. They have a web site and phone. Just in case you need to feel that you have some place to stay. In my opinion, except for Caracoles having a much more professional lobby/ office, the rooms and rates are just about the same.

Just back from GN...an outstanding couple of days!!!!!!
I had a school group coming in and went to Cowboy Motel to see if they had a big room for the group because it was cold and windy for camping at the lagoon. Chavelo, the owner was fantastic...extremely accomodating and gave em a deal. They have 2 "family" rooms of 3 queen beds and a hide-a bed for 650 pesos. All rooms were beautiful, nice furniture, very clean and friendly.

The restaurant is now open for breakfast and we LOVED the food and new breakfast chef they have is excellent and fast and smiley:spingrin:
the machaca was delicious...good service too.

We discussed the importance of having a website...he is working on it. Chavelo is a success story...started with a torta/sandwhich cart and now has a top notch hotel...he doesnt have alot of capital or technical expertise with promotions but I'm gonna help him get something going and for now you can contact me and I can make your reservations by calling him.
they filled up the night we were there too.

He also runs tours to the whale lagoon...his whale package is $100 for a room for the night, full breakfast, salt works tour, whale tour...he takes you in his van to the lagoon and is great because he used to run the lagoon tours there himself....you can also hang around the lagoon a bit longer than with the other busier bus tours who rush you along in and out. This area of the lagoon they go to is special as it has the Interpretive Centre, restaurant, campground so you can enjoy lunch after whale watching if you want to stay in the lagoon a bit longer and watch whales from shore. It's a great deal and more personal service than other providers.
Chavelo went out of his way for our group and it was a very pleasant experience.

tripledigitken - 2-10-2010 at 12:27 PM

Shari,

You are right about that being a special place to view whales. You can easily fill an hour or two walking along the lagoon looking at the birds and whales from shore. The restaurant there serves good food too.

How was the whale watching this trip?

Ken

shari - 2-10-2010 at 12:34 PM

whale trip was....well in over 25 years of hangin with whales, it was way up there on best trips EVER...I'll do a trip report when I have time...I'm still trying to digest all the crazy stuff that happened in that magical 2 hours.

One observation...it was VERY quiet out there for height of the season...only a couple cars...only a few whale watchers...we were the only boat out when we went...another later boat only had 2 people on it too. It has been a real slow season and now with all the rain, even slower as folks think the roads are impassable. The whales seem pretty darn happy!

As I mentioned before, Chavelo is not in the same financial league as Los Caracoles or Malarrimo...which is why I try to help him out, but he is open to feedback and wants to improve his services.
The phone # at the hotel is 615-157-2765 but they do not speak english so I can call for a reservation if you dont speak spanish.

Bajahowodd - 2-10-2010 at 12:50 PM

Thanks for the info, Shari. I've mentioned it before, but once again, Chavelo's place is one of the more architecturally pleasing and inviting in the whole town. Any idea when he may build-out the rest of the hotel? Looks like there's space for maybe 3-4 more rooms.

shari - 2-10-2010 at 01:10 PM

He had 12 rooms done yesterday...so the new rooms are open now...as many projects here...more to follow when the economy allows...but he sure is on the right track.
