Vehicle S.Dakota registered insurance snag

vandenberg - 12-3-2009 at 10:53 AM

We have to go up to Sacramento the end of the month.
Our Toyota is registered in South Dakota and now we have a major snag with getting insurance for the States.
Triple A in Ca. won't insure an out of state vehicle and S.D. won't insure without a physical address there.

Any kind of help or suggestion would be highly appreciated.

How about renting from a mailbox company in South Dakota? They have a physical address to receive your mail which routes to your private post box. You can instruct them to forward your mail to you elsewhere.

I called our our old Idaho insurance agent. He issued a policy on our SD plated car using our AZ address so we could drive in CA. He said the key was that we have ID drivers licenses.

Well, we have valid Ca. licenses, but that didn't sway Triple A in Ca. They want the vehicle registered in Ca.
Steve, maybe your agent can help us?
We do have impeccable records.:saint:

I have used Geico for my SD registered vehicles showing both AZ and CA addresses on the various vehicles. Never was (or is) a problem. They rate the policy on the address you use - CA or AZ etc. They also apply the highest minimum between SD and the state of address. 10 years of doing this without ever having a problem.

If you have a SD P.O.Box for a address, you must register the vehicle in that county. (or so I've been told by officials in SD) And possibly, SD drivers licenses.

You need a insurance carrier who is not tied to only one state. (CA AAA)

So the reason for the SD registration? Is it smog, or lower registration fees, or?

Ken

Ken, if you have a vehicle staying full time in Mex. with Calif, AZ, NV or several other states plates, you have to keep US insurance in effect all the time and the ins. co has to prove it electronically to the state. That is not a requirement in SD. And the cost is reasonable.

Thanks Lou, I will bookmark that as it may be important to us in the future.

When I took my Colorado Allstate insurance card to the San Diego DMV for proof of insuranace druing registration, there was no problem with my South Dakota billing address. Of course I did snip the top of the insurance card off that said "Colorado Auto Evidence of Insurance"...

Didn't we do this recently? Thought we did.

Call or email this lady in Ensenada. She sells insurance by the day, week, month or whatever.

Every few months it surfaces again, Dennis. Like a couple of other subjects.

Ain't it the truth, Lou. If anybody starts another FM1-2-3 thread again for the next year, I'll gouge my eyes out.
On the other hand, we haven't bashed illegals for a while.

If I remember correctly, the last time I followed you guys's advise, it ended up, after much ado, that those insurance quotes were only good for Mexican plated vehicles.

Nevertheless, I give it a shot.

We have a car that lives in Mexico full time, we keep it registered in Or. and only insure it when it is time to renew the registration then cancel it. We have been doing this for 4 years and have never had a problem.

bajalou - 12-3-2009 at 01:56 PM

You would if you were in some other states that require the ins. cos. to report to them all cancellations.

Natalie Ann - 12-3-2009 at 02:04 PM

vandenberg.... I suspect the problem you're having is because you have CSAA (CA State AA), which we all refer to as AAA. My neighbor has real AAA (American Auto Assoc) and their insurance is different than ours in several ways - out of state licensing among them.

As far as I know you are not required to maintain insurance coverage on a car that is not in the U.S. or is not being driven. Every year when I drive to Baja I suspend the coverage on my vehicle when I cross the border, I also suspend the coverage on the vehicle we leave behind in Oregon because nobody is there to drive it.

To get the USA insurance nin Ensenada your vehicle has to have Mexican Plates and you have to have a Mexico address.

I doubt that our agent located in Boise could help you. We are ID residents still since that is the only place we own a home still in the U.S.

FYI, only applies for continues policies. Tried, and the best they will do is issue a 6 months, non refundable policy, while we're only going to be there for a short while. So, so much for that one.
