Well, I had to Google it. Wikipedia says that 190 proof is illegal in California but 151 proof is legal. Wow! pretty hard core. I guess it would fit right in here with the Nomad board. :tumble:

Everclear has two uses. Molotov c-cktails and totally destroying one's ability to think and reason. In case no one figured it out, 190 proof makes it 90% pure alcohol. I sincerely hope that our original poster was joking about this stuff.

I think it's 95%. It can also be used as a fuel for camp stoves.

190 proof would be 95% alcohol, wouldn't it. But what's 5% among friends?

Makes a Joe Frazier Christmas punch.

Yikes, I'm gonna get another Tecate Light.

bajalou - 12-4-2009 at 05:31 PM

Just use few drops more mix.

I got some here in Mx that I think is 180 proof. Just checked and the label is gone so not sure. But I use it to absorb the water in my gas tank that sometimes accumulates there.

What is the stuff that the hardcore alcoholics down here get at the farmacia? I have always been under the impression that it was fairly high test stuff.

My son just bought some Everclear at a store in Imperial Beach, CA. We use it to make a homemade drink called "Apple Pie" Hot or cold this drink tastes just like apple pie and will help you to feel a little pie eyed as well.....mmmm tastey.

hmmm...i wonder where that store is in imperial beach.

oh, and btw, using everclear makes the tinctures last years longer as it is higher in alcohol content. i'd be happy to send a link to those who might want to make aromatherapy blends and/or herbal tinctures.

DENNIS - 12-4-2009 at 06:56 PM

The stuff sold here is Caña, made from sugar cane. It's sold to be used as an antiseptic just like the alcohol sold in the states. Isn't that wood alcohol?
Anyway, because it's made from cane, it can be drank and is by the desperate. On election days, the winos come out of the culverts and hit the drug stores for caña since it isn't restricted from sale.
Good stuff.

willardguy - 12-4-2009 at 07:09 PM

because everclear is very low in congeners (this is the stuff that gives you the hangover) this very pure alcohol that is flavorless is excellent for making a number of delicious fruit flavored c-cktails. obviously you dont want to drink this stuff straight as you wouldnt 151 rum, yet no body mf"s bacardi!
sure its ridculously strong but how about using 1/2 AS MUCH?

bajalou - 12-4-2009 at 07:22 PM

Does it have to be everclear or will a specific proof do the job? As I don't use it, I honestly don't know your answer. I do know many recipes are however brand specific for the ingredients. Whatever you are making I want to try it!!;D;D

no, i don't think it has to be a specific brand...it's just that it has to have high alcohol content, and i have not heard of any other brands. i'd be happy to know of of any...however, i think it will have to be vodka. i'm wondering if that cana that dennis mentioned will work. i will ask in my aromatherapy group.

i'll bring u a sample of my blend as soon as i get the right alcohol.

Well, if high test is what you're after, this stuff will work for you. It's straight alcohol...the first cut on the way to being rum. Grocery stores have it, drug stores and some liquor stores too.
Don't drink it. It's one of the two things in life that will make you go blind.

dianaji - 12-4-2009 at 09:03 PM

Dennis,

is cana less expensive than everclear? does one buy it in the liquor department? do u think i can bring it back to the states without a problem? sorry to be so uninformed... i have never brought back alcohol.

Diver - 12-4-2009 at 09:07 PM

Everclear was the cheapest way to have a party in college.

1 washtub or trash can
1 fifth of everclear
lot's of ice
any fruit juice or mix you can get
fruit slices optional
anything else you have (booze)

dianaji - 12-4-2009 at 09:12 PM

Dennis,

what is "high test"?

DENNIS - 12-4-2009 at 09:14 PM

In the stores, it would be on the shelf with the bandaids etc. In the past, it was the only medicinal alcohol available. Now you can find wood alcohol, probably imported. Just ask the pharmacy attendant at the larger stores or ask at a well stocked liquor store.

Good question about taking it across, Diana. Since it's medicinal, I can't imagine the restrictions being the same as tequila. Like I mentioned, Mexico certainly doesn't consider it liquor. That's why one can buy it on election day or before 10AM on any day.

Maybe David Medicine Man will see this thread and give us all the straight scoop.

In the 90 percentile. Not proof....percent, like Everclear. Caña and Everclear are basically the same thing except one is made from sugar cane and the other from corn. [I think it's corn]

Once upon a time, a long, long way back, the oil companies sold a gasoline with higher octane than was previously available. People old enough to have been around then referred to it as high test. Today it is simply referred to as premium.

And one must have a reasonable sense of humor to play here, lest they either get offended or just don't get it. There actually are (almost) no mean spirited people here.

I'm sorry I have no answers to the original question, but ...

In Jamaica "cane juce" is usually kept under the bar in an old plastic gallon water bottle. If you ask for it they give you a shotglass of the stuff and a 16 oz glass of water. You need the water :o

And be careful with that "apple pie" drink. No lie, a young friend of mine just recently served that to girl not knowing she was a "lightweight". Now he is fighting date rape accusations. No joke. :(

I have a bottle that I bought in the grocery store with the same labeling, only it's 70 GL.
Likely wood alcohol and that stuff could kill you.

BajaNomad - 12-5-2009 at 08:44 PM

As some here are alluding to - wood alcohol (which is Methanol or Methyl Alcohol) will kill. One sip of methanol (as little as 10 mL) can cause permanent blindness by destruction of the optic nerve and 30 mL (1 fl oz) is potentially fatal:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Methanol
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alcohol

Alcoholic beverages ("consumables") have Ethanol (Ethyl Alcohol). Everclear is a familiar "brand" of neutral grain spirit (pure "grain alcohol"). There are stores in states that it's legal for sale that have their own store/private label. Grain is just one source of rectified spirits.

While you should double-check with the authorities, alcoholic beverages over 76% alcohol are illegal for sale in California, but I'm guessing are not illegal to possess. If you source something in Baja, you may likely be able to bring it back.

95-96% alcohol content beverages, again as mentioned previously in this thread, are available for sale in Arizona.

Note this rectified spirit imported from Poland by a Chicago distributing company:

Brought back a bottle from the Mainland last year, labeled 96 % Puro Alcohol de Cana. It was displayed with the other liquors in the grocery store, although if I remember, it never made it to a shelf, but was just placed on the floor there, and came in two or three sizes. I splurged and bought the 440 ml size, by far the smallest.

It is plainly to be used as a beverage by the more discriminating patrons, cost a mere 13 pesos, about one dollar, and drinking the entire contents would really throw you for a loop. I don't bother with the northern drug store offerings now. They, if consumed, could blind you, so why buy them if you can have a more powerful antiseptic around that is safe, and cheaper. What we usually can buy in drug stores in Canada is 70% and can't be consumed. In the past I have added Alcohol to a gas tank when searching to remedy engine problems but would never put 70% in the tank

96 % is about as close to pure Alcohol as you will find, as the solution rapidly draws water from the air beyond that concentration. My small bottle, with about 200 ml left was once 192 proof, I believe. The warnings on the label advise not to drink it (because no tax was collected on it, I suppose), that it is inflamable, avoid contact with eyes, don't give it to children, that it is illegal to sell it to people under 18 years of age. I'll be looking for more on the next trip.

dianaji - 12-6-2009 at 07:40 AM

i rest my case...i have no need to defend my sense of humor...i know what makes me laugh, and for sure it's not sarcasm, which is a form of cruelty and humor at others' expense... and it is none of my business what u think of me.

SANGRIA.... Yummy

190 PROOF AND A MARINE DON’T MIX

ELINVESTIG8R - 12-6-2009 at 07:32 PM

One weekend in Hawthorne Nevada during 1971, eighteen year old Marine Lance Corporal (E-3) David M. is drinking boilermakers with 190 proof alcohol and Coors beer in Max’s Bar. Max’s Bar was unofficially designated a bar in town where underage Marines could drink. Lance Corporal David M. remembers nothing else until awakened by fellow Marines the next morning from his bunk and told to report to the Commanding Officer of the Marine Barracks. Lance Corporal David M. reports to Commanding Officer at attention and is read the riot act by said Commanding Officer. It seems that the night before, Lance Corporal David M. was found by the Mineral County Sheriff’s Department lying unconscious on a grave in the town graveyard.

Said deputies placed Lance Corporal David M. into the back their patrol car and gave him a free ride back to the base. On the way to said base Lance Corporal David M. kicked out one of the back door windows and now owes Mineral County for parts and labor. Said money was taken from Lance Corporal David M’s pay. I never drank 190 proof alcohol again in my life. Luckily I was never charged with drunk in public or destruction of county property but did have to go the sheriff’s office on my weekends off and wash cops cars and suffer the slings and arrows of the deputies for my transgression. All in all I’d say I got off very lucky.

Yeah, it's not blended stuff, but does work... and for many applications

One can buy a small still for around $250-$350 dollars which would take care of just about anyones needs.. I have plans for one that can do many gallons a day.. you can buy a still online if you want.. the ingredients can be secured with very little problem. With the still concept you can drink and drive as my car uses "ethanol" albeit only 85%.. there are conversion kits from Brazil.. they use ethanol a lot for transportation.

After all the "alcohol" you drink is just a molecule (ethanol) {thanks Doug} which is derived from a fermentation process that's been used for a very long time... and still is..

Many country's have no restrictions on the personal production of "sprits" to a point, have not been able to find the Mexican "law" on the subject.. ???

Martyman - 12-7-2009 at 09:48 AM

They sell Everclear and another brand "Diesel Fuel" or something named like that... at BevMo in CA.
My buddy made grappa from our pressing while making wine. Add pressing to canning kettle, add a little water. Put a wide mouth pyrex bowl in the middle of the kettle. Heat slowly and invert the lid. Pack the lid with ice to condense the booze to drip off the lid handle into the pyrex. Do not boil. Alcohol evaporates before water.
It wasn't bad. A faint taste of rubber tire. Probably 90 proof.

Caña is sold even in the big grocery stores. Used to be the only rubbing alcohol available here before importing goods became the business norm.

BAJA.DESERT.RAT - 1-23-2016 at 03:13 PM

Hola,

i bought everclear at my local liquor store in los angeles for $ 20.00 for 750 mil. i use it to clean my briar smoking pipes as instructed on a pipe website.

here is their website if there are more questions and if you need more locations that carry their product.

www.luxco.com

quite a few disclaimers on the label:

GRAIN ALCOHOL

WARNING !!overconsumption may endanger your health
CAUTION !! EXTREMELY FLAMMABLE HANDLE WITH CARE
CAUTION: DO NOT APPLY TO OPEN FLAME. KEEP AWAY FROM FIRE, HEAT AND OPEN FLAME. CONTENTS MAY IGNITE OR EXPLODE. DO NOT CONSUME IN EXCESSIVE QUANTITIES. NOT INTENDED FOR CONSUMPTION UNLESS MIXED WITH NON-ALCOHOLIC BEVERAGES

75.5 a;c/vol ( 151 proof )

when there was a liquor store at the grand central market in downtown los angeles, one of the workers tried to sell me a 750 ml of a mexican grain alcohol that he claimed was 200 proof. sorry, i didn't look at the bottle or label.

also on the pipe forum, i bought a 32 oz plastic bottle of 70 % isopropyl rubbing alcohol that on the label stated first aid antiseptic.
does not contain, nor is intended as a substitute for grain or ethyl alcohol. will produce serious gastric disturbances if taken internally.

i hope this helps. nothing meant to be sarcastic.

The BevMo store in La Mesa, CA has it but it's kept under the counter. My daughter uses it to make lemoncello: peelings from 10 lemons, 1 liter everclear, 1 liter water and 3 cups white sugar. Everclear is 190 proof = 95% alcohol some some people use 80 proof vodka, just not as good.

Beautiful tribute Ron.

Thank you for the reminder also, it's flying by.

Yes, Hope I didn't hit a sore spot. This was from before I joined the board.

Thanks for all your input Nomads.

As I mentioned....before today's imports of isopropyl alcohol, Caña was the only choice.
Today I would look in the common over the counter drug stores.
Otherwise just buy a bottle of Viva Villa. It's caña.

She was one of my favorites. I am sorry I never got to meet her. She was a very gentle, peaceful soul...and still is, in our hearts.

Viva Villa is about 30-35% alcohol, the rest is rat poison. It is to tequila what Annie Green Springs is to wine.

Cane alcohol....caña. Says it on the label. Only assumed to be Tequila by those who don't read.

Ahhh yes. I didn't read back through the pages.
She was the lady who took a beating on a property deal around Rosarito. All she wanted to do was work in her garden. So sad.

Caña out of the bottle is 95%. What's the difference when human consumption is concerned? Grain...Cane....both will blind you in large doses.

We used to buy it all the time here in az. 1 small bottle in a 3 gallon jug of jungle juice.

Where does it say caña won't burn in a camp stove?

Never occurred to me to wonder. I did however walk into a Gigante super market one morning, and right inside the entrance sitting in a big chair was a young lady passed out colder than a rock. A store security guard stood by her awaiting an ambulance.
Apparently she had gone down the health product aisle, grabbed a bottle of rubbing caña, and took a huge swig of the contents. It knocked her out.
Further investigation by authorities showed she was suicidal.

Ok...thanks, Larry. I'll go back and read your post.

We had a drink in the college era called the Baja 1,000---half shot of everclear mixed with a half shot of tequila...yep, that's some good solvent.

Great band. Are they still around?

"No wonder-- most of the medicinal alcohol currently sold in retail stores, is denatured and supposedly undrinkable."
==================

She drank caña. That was the rubbing alcohol available at the time.
