Noche Buena 2009

woody with a view - 12-5-2009 at 08:23 AM

picked up a box yesterday from a co worker who lives in playas. he smuggles one thru for me every year.

if bev-mo carried it i wonder if it would taste as good as the contraband stuff?

BooJumMan - 12-5-2009 at 10:44 AM

I am looking forward to getting some! I haven't had it in a few years.

alafrontera - 12-5-2009 at 12:53 PM

I had one in Ensenada last week, frankly not as good as I remembered it and I didn't have more. :(

I used to get it here in San Diego but it's been a few years and I can't find it now. Ditto on Bohemia Obsura, apparently not imported. Easy to find Negro Modello and that's my favorite anyway

Bajahowodd - 12-5-2009 at 01:05 PM

For all you Noche Buena fans NOB, I just picked up a sixer at Trader Joe's called JB Winterfest. It's really quite good and very reminiscent of Noche Buena.

Is that sold is some off-size bottle, like 20 oz?

vandy - 12-5-2009 at 04:27 PM

I just saw it offered at Soriana in San Jose del Cabo.
110 pesos per 12-pack.
I have to grind my grain tonight and get the home fire-kettle burning!
11 days to 2 weeks until super-brew.:bounce::bounce::bounce:

Bajahowodd - 12-5-2009 at 05:05 PM

Stateside, less than a buck a bottle is a deal.

110 Ps today = $8.70 and that includes tax. That sounds pretty good to me.

BTW...it's the same price up here.

Is Noche Buena a Bock or Doppelbock beer?

The TJ's Winterfest is a Doppelbock. I personally took advantage of the TJ Winterfest beer being available in the stores throughout the entire year this year (in previous years it was not). The TJ "Hofbrau" (green label) is a Bock beer btw.

What better place to enjoy a Noche Buena than....

You'll have to wait for someone more knowledgeable about beer than I am for your answer.:?:

For Trade/Barter

Pompano - 12-6-2009 at 11:30 AM

Whatcha got to trade?

Try a "Hari-Kari Salud!"

1 part saki
8 parts noche buena

I'm drinking of giving up thinking this stuff.

toneart - 12-6-2009 at 12:04 PM

For the last several years I have bought lots of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. That is their Christmas ale. I take a good stash of it to Mulege.

I have tried to find Noche Buena in early January in Mulege but it gets sold out immediately upon first delivery.

Hook - 12-7-2009 at 10:24 AM

Word over here is that Casta beer is being terminated by the entity that produces Tecate. I believe they bought it a few years back. Very sad!!!

If your guilty conscience doesn't allow you to consume a 20 oz. bottle take heart, the Winter Welcome is only 18.7 oz. so have a few. Thanks for the recom. Zac, enjoyed one yesterday. It was tas-tee!

Every year I make it a point to try Noche Buena but to date haven't been successful. Anyone know if it can be had in San Felipe around Navidad? :?:

Bajaboy,

I do as well. Were very lucky, as beer drinkers, to have two great taverns less than 10 minutes drive from each other.

Doug,

Accordiing to the website for...Cervecería Cuauhtémoc Moctezuma, S.A. de C.V. ...N.B. is a Bock syyle lager beer.

I've never had the pleasure of trying it. I've always heard it was quite tastey.

Lol... do you really say "warsh"? My Brother in law says it and it cracks me up.

So my co-worker was telling me I need to try Noche Buena. Where do I find this stuff?

Tony,

After a couple of hours of research last night I can highly recommend The Draft Version of Celebration Ale! Off to Bev More to get the special 12 pack at $12.99.

Cheers!

it was the beer! everyone knows there's no "R" in wash...:light:

Bajahowodd - 12-10-2009 at 05:38 PM

Adding a r to the word wash seems to be a regional thing. A good friend of mine who was born and raised in the LA area has always spoken the word as if it was spelled warsh. I've met some others who do the same. It is among a number of words that have regional pronounciation differences.

I don't want to hijack this thread, but since we started talking about NB and other GOOD beers, I thought it might be interesting to have a thread on really BAD beers, Mexican and otherwise.

I'll offer a few suggestions to start. In Mexico I'd nominate Sol, Corona and a "lite" beer called Brisas that may or may not still exist. Also there is or was Mexico's cheapest beer, Victoria, which was still better than Butt Lite and had the advantage of being affordable to the poorest of the poor. In the early 60's a bottle of Victoria cost 50 centavos, 4 cents USD at the time.

In the US, even though I put down Butt Light, I'd say Pearl from TX is about the worst I've tasted except for their NA version that was worse. Although in the 70's in CA when I had little cash, there was Lucky Lager which tasted vaguely like soapy dishwater but was amusing for the pictographs on the inside of the caps. When I was in my teens fighting forest fires out of Missoula, Montana, there was a local beer called Highlander that was actually green in color. It was on tap at a bar called "The Can-dle" featuring a picture of a toilet on the sign. Inside, there was a trough with flowing water at the base of the bar so one could puke in place without having to run for the john.

I'd have to agree with you, Oso. It is hard to get a good beer in Mulege. Negro Modelo is probably the best. Then Tecate. There is a distribution monopoly that keeps out the better mainland beers. For example, you can't get XX Amber...only the lager. All the rest, I think are the light colored lagers that they think gringos prefer, like Corona. Pacifico is OK, but pretty lightweight. No Bohemia or Carta Blanca available.

I would also add Bud and Coors as tasteless, uninteresting beers.

When I lived in San Francisco in the 1960s and 70s, there were a few bars that had troughs under the bar. Carryovers from the Gold Rush days. I don't think the water was still running in the troughs when I was there. Too many people would pee in it, I think. I thought about it.

toneart - 12-10-2009 at 06:41 PM

I met a woman recently who says "Warsh". She comes from a rural California town. I hadn't heard it since I was a child in the 1940s on a boy's ranch just outside of Raymond CA. The people ran the ranch with state subsidization and used child labor to help run it. The were newly transplanted Evangelists from Oklahoma. Sadistic too.

I could go on and on, but the short version is: that is where I learned about hypocrites, ultra right wingers, religious fanatics and downright mean people who threatened us kids that we were going to hell. They uses to beat the hell out of us. You learn by experience to observe, keep your mouth shut and not trust adults. Those observations strung together personality profiles that haven't changed much during my lifetime. The profile string of attitudes and actions seem consistent.

My best friend, an Indian boy, and I would get the giggles in church and then these people would yank us out and literally carry us in the air by our arms and it felt like our shoulders were being yanked out of their sockets. The Indian boy told me when we reunited as adults, that they stole the money his mother had left him when she died.

Sorry for the hijack, but the word "warsh" triggered some real bad emotions and memories.

finally cracked open the 2009 vintage. i don't taste the chocolate like with the N. Modelo. it is very good and refreshing to be able to have something which i usually only get 12 times a year....

That you could warsh that memory from your brain.

On a lighter note, there are a number of regional pronunciation differences. And I'm certain that would be the same in Baja and Mexico in general.
