rhintransit - 12-8-2009 at 06:30 AM

hit the wrong key last time, sorry.
I understand the card is something like a national ID card, but can someone tell me exactly what it is and why a gringo would need/want one? thank you.

Ja! Ve vill zoon all haff zee paypahs.

What are you talking about?

Dave - 12-8-2009 at 09:27 AM

I'm not registering my cell phone with the government.

karenintx - 12-8-2009 at 01:46 PM

Kate is correct...dead line is April of 2010. If you have a monthly plan through either Tel Cel or Movie star your information is already on record.

If you have a cell phone that you only buy time for...then you either register it by the dead line or your cell phone will become "a dead line" next April.

Hermano Grande.

When we bought our telcel phone, we registered it with someone in Mexico City---I have no idea with whom. It is one of those pay as you go phones.

Is this a separate registration?

OK...did some checking

Not only are phones to be registered but all details of #'s called, text messages etc. are to be kept for one year.

U.S. phones, whether prepaid or subscription aren't covered in this legislation.

If your phone is lost or stolen it is in your best interest to notify the authorities.

Prepaid phone registration can be done by the purchaser, not necessarily the end user. An easy out for those unwilling to participate.

I see an emerging market here.

Carlos Slim is putting everyone on a giant speed-dial.

I am still confused----so the Tel-Cel pre-paid phone I bought a few years ago and registered needs to be registered again?

And who is to keep the records of the calls?

Where we are, TelCel is the only Mexican phone cell phone that works there.

<If they have your info- passport/FM, address etc. probably not. Although, I understand they are requiring fingerprints.>

And who is to keep the records of the calls?

<Obviously, not you.>

They ain't gonna get anything from me. At least not from a phone I use for business. Unacceptable.

No, all they wanted when I registered it was an address---may have to give up the convenience of having the cell phone.

Back on topic:

I get 5% off my medicine at Mega here. I get 50% off my water bill.

It is a great ID.

I had absolutely no problem getting one with my FM2 at DIF office. Of course, I needed the usual..copy of passport, CFE.....and I think 2 small pix(infante, I think is the size). Obviously you should check with your DIF office to see what they require as sometimes(jejejeje), it differs.

Have to check with the hubby...who is out of town, but he was the one that went to Movie Star for us. We have sim cards and if I remember correctly he only provided our US passport. They typed something in their computer and that was it. No finger prints was taken.

Reason we did this...with a FM-3 & Fido the Mexican goverment already has our passport #'s.

Petey - 12-8-2009 at 07:17 PM

I got a couple of Movistar phones about a month ago. They asked if I had a CURP, but since I did not I provided my passport info, which was used to register the phone in Mexico City. Took about 48 hours - if I had had a CURP I was told I could have gotten the phones immediately.

are you sure that that is a CURP card, not a tercera edad card? the latter gives discounts to people over 60, at various stores and on buses and national planes. I think CURP is different, and you do not get it at DIF...at least not in Loreto.

Here is the website for the cel phone registration program.

Dave, you say you aren't going to do it for your phone, that's fine, but what will you do when it doesn't work after April? A can and string only goes so far. Unless you are saying you have US based cel phones. This program doesn't apply to them.

bajajudy - 12-9-2009 at 07:26 AM

Clave Unica de Registro de Poblacion is what it says.

I'd use a U.S. phone for business and a nominee to purchase and register one from Mexico. The Mexican phone would only be used for calls I could control...outgoing calls either personal or emergency.

The thing I find particularly evasive is the requirement that users must notify the authorities if the phone is lost of stolen. Can you imagine what would happen if your phone were stolen and used for a drug deal or worse...and you didn't realize it until after the fact. :o

I've misplaced a phone for days/weeks only to later find it between a car seat or in a jacket pocket. Now, I'm gonna be held criminally responsible for being a klutz?

If Mexico wants to pretend to fight the cartels they'll do it without my help. This is idiocy and I ain't buying in.
