Good Storm Swept through Ensenada Last Night.

I hope Dennis is okay out there in Punta Banda. My electric did not go out. No damage. Watch out for all the new pot holes and open man holes and man hole covers this morning.

We had 46 MPH winds at 5:30pm and even my falcons were happy to come indoors for a night. Lots of shingles flying around (not mine) as the wind came up from the south- which most people don't design for. On the bright side- we had the fireplace going all day... almost got me into the holiday spirit- almost.

We had lots of wind/rain out on the beach west of San Quintin as well. Heading over to check out how the roof fared - should be a good test to see how things held up...

DENNIS - 12-8-2009 at 11:53 AM

Power just came back on. That was the most intense blow I've seen here. Lots of neighborhood damage. BajaDoc's house, up above me had to really get hit hard. I've heard there are tuna seiners on the beach on the other side of the hill. They belong to the fish farmers.
Time for a Pacifico. SALUD

Dang wind almost took out our young avocado tree that may produce next year----was getting dark and could not find any more wooden poles, so used an old metal shower--curtain rod.

Looks strange, but it worked.

Sure felt like more than a good sailing breeze.

All Of A Sudden Winter Just Happened

Bajahowodd - 12-8-2009 at 01:29 PM

Sure hope no one suffered any significant damage.

Brrrrr. Nobody mentioned the temps. Darn cold in OC. Not supposed even get back up to 60 until the end of the week.

k-rico - 12-8-2009 at 01:46 PM

Big blow in Playas de Tijuana last night. I saw three power transformers explode. Power out the whole night. Candles and battery powered radio for entertainment. Head lamp for reading.

What causes the pole mounted transformers to blow-up? Shorts?

I was worried about the tree in front of the house getting uprooted, it's only 5 years old and has gotten large quick, but it made it.

Just spoke with my son in Montana who is leaving to come down here---I told him it was quite cold and we had a lot of rain and wind. In a less than understanding voice, he informed me that at his home, today it warmed all the way up to a toasty 12 degrees.

He can't wait to get down here.

typically, when you look up at a transformer and see a big flash, hear a big boom, you are witnessing a circuit breaker trip. It is very rare that a transformer "explodes." Doub't you have witnessed that.

Circuit breakers trip when load is too high or power surges.

39 degrees in Orange at 5:30am. Certain body parts disappeared!!! My little block house on the hill in La Mision must have been iced over. BRRR que frio!!

I have, twice right here. Huge explosion with blinding light and subsequent fire that seperated the pole beneith the transformer leaving it to hang on it's spreader by the wires smoldering untill the pros got here to change things.

And Certain Parts May Have Enlarged!

Thanks goat, I saw two of those and I did see what DENNIS described too. It burned brightly, CFE guys replaced it today.

Many times this is caused by a buildup of dust on the transformer and the moisture causes a nasty short ... which leads to the explosion.

nobaddays - 12-9-2009 at 07:57 AM

last night was cold in Pescadero/ todos santos

bajabass - 12-9-2009 at 09:37 AM

Low of 34 in O.C. last night. I fell asleep in front of the fireplace.

astrobaja - 12-9-2009 at 09:54 AM

We had about 5 inches of rain, and nasty gusts of up to 100 km/h (60mph) right around dark! In the morning we woke up to a dusting of snow here in the sierra! At higher elevations there was a fair bit more accumulation. Very comfy in the house though, had the firepllace roaring and a nice sniffter of Corraleo reposado tequila! Life is good!
