Would like to take this road mentioned in Backroads Baja. Does anyone know the current state of the road?

San Javier road to Pacific coast

I'm still hoping someone can give me some idea of the conditions on this road. It is shown on the maps, but I have learned that that means nada.

I took this road two years ago so my info is not urrent. Rains can really inluence its condition. I went theough in my f250 pulling a small flatbed
trailer. Had to go across two bedstreams that were "paved" with rocks. otherwise easy.elfbrewery - 1-18-2010 at 02:22 PM

I drove it a couple of weeks ago and it is fine -- 2 wheel drive and in good condition. Nicer drive than Highway 1 and a lot less traffic.elfbrewery - 1-19-2010 at 03:49 PM

From San Javier to Insurgentes it probably took us 1-1/2 hours. Loreto to San Javier -- about 1 hour. It is paved up into the canyon and the rest is

Paul, which road did you drive? Coming from Loreto, there is one road to San Jose de Comundu several miles before you reach San Javier. It is
signed, but the sign has been lying down for several months. The other road goes through San Javier and passes to the left of the mission.

Here's a part of it... Loreto to San Javier road log from last summer...
I made some mileage notes from Hwy. 1 to San Javier:
0.0 San Javier road at Hwy. 1, exactly one mile south of the signed Loreto entrance road.
8.2 Rock art parking on left, at arroyo crossing… short walk to site.
9.8 End of pavement, good graded road continues up.
11.4 Rancho Las Parras and chapel.
16.1 Rancho Viejo, the original location of Mision San Javier (1699-1710).
17.3 Road to San Jose Comondu junction.
21.7 San Francisco Javier de Biaundo 1699-1817 The second California mission was originally founded 5 miles north, but moved here in 1710. The church

I am talking about the road that goes through San Javier to the left of the Mission and then turns south.
I haven't been on the road that turns off before San Javier and goes to San Jose de Comondu for a year and it is usually pretty rough -- not 4 wheel
drive but slow going especially close to Commondu. It is a race route for the Loreto 400, which is raced every August.Paula - 1-20-2010 at 07:05 PM
Thanks, Paul. That is the road I thought you meant. Much as I love the short road, onr short stretch is just too risky.
I think the Mission road takes about the same time, maybe more, than the highway. But it is a nice change of scenery.
