Cat, I would love to go, but we will be out west of Baja. How about an Easter run??????????

KurtG - 12-8-2009 at 10:18 PM

I'm the "want to go but don't have a truck" guy. If this trip happens and anyone has room for a passenger I would ride down to Rcho Sta Ines and meet up with you for the trip to the mission.
Kurt

El Comadante Loco - 12-8-2009 at 11:21 PM

I am interested.....

Kurt most likely I will be riding solo maybe one person with me, the wife doesn't want to go. I have a full size Dodge Ram (4door) you are welcome to ride with me...

Cyanide41 - 12-9-2009 at 08:07 AM

I ended up having to back out of the last Nomads "fun ride" and I have been waiting for the next one ever since. I just got me some new tires too!

[Edited on 12-9-2009 by Cyanide41]

David K - 12-9-2009 at 08:18 AM

Jose, one more catagory to vote on could be: Yes, I want to go and will if the economy permits!

That would be me... Need to take the new Tacoma in there so it can get its first underbody damage! :tumble:

Thats great! I would ride down ( I carry camping gear on the bike) and after Santa Maria continue down south for a week or so. I have always wanted to visit this mission so am grateful for the opportunity to ride with you.

Okay, Baja Angel is putting in for those days off, so we are planning on BREAKING (IN) the new Tacoma with its first trip to Mision Santa Maria and over the WIDOWMAKER!

(PS [shameless plug, but for good water conservation]: It would help if I had some more work between now and then, so everyone in north San Diego County that would like their irrigation system or landscape lighting upgraded, please call! Online consulting for distant do-it-yourselfers, too.)

That's great david I always wanted to do a ride in Baja with you, come on guys start calling DK to udgrade your old water system...

David K - 12-10-2009 at 08:18 AM

Thank Jose... and I hope you can be driving your Cat in some construction project, as well!

wilderone - 12-10-2009 at 09:39 AM

I'm interested, but don't want to drive my Subaru, and would like to camp a couple days - hike the canyon. I'll bring cherry pound cake!!
(Unemployed at present - hope to be unemployed in February for one last fling!)

TMW - 12-10-2009 at 05:10 PM

wilderone you can leave your vehicle at Rancho Santa Ynez and ride in with one of us. That's what KurtG is doing. There will be room for everyone that wants to go.

BAJACAT - 12-10-2009 at 11:27 PM

YES wILDERONE, TW is correct there will be room... just get ready...

wilderone - 12-11-2009 at 08:44 AM

I'm always ready.

David K - 12-11-2009 at 08:57 AM

You may get to pick from several rides! While we tend to pack the back seat area with clothes bags, etc., we could easily make room in the new Tacoma if we are able to go on this trip... We had the pleasure of meeting you at Viva Baja Cactus, 3 years ago!

David,
New truck, huh?! :o Nothing like a bit of retail therapy to cure those blues :D

What was wrong with the last one....too much sand on the mats?

I will be riding dirt bike into the mission sometime around Feb1-3 while spending a few days exploring Catavina boulder fields and coastal road....the pictures provided on this mission ride thread have been helpful in my anticipation of some conditions.....thanks to you and others for that info....;D

David K - 12-11-2009 at 11:34 AM

Sure, you are welcome... Want a tough trials type challenge? Try and see how you do on the El Camino Real towards Gonzaga... In my http://vivabaja.com/msm page, I give the GPS and photo for where it leaves the road, almost 2 miles from the mission.... it goes up the steep hill to the left, northwest (before the auto road climbs the final rocky grade to where it ends). Then once on top of the ridge, the ECR swings around to the east and parallels the canyon on the ridge as it heads to the desert floor to the southeast.

I only know of one rider to use it both directions, Kevin Ward... and he did damage his ride in doing so.

About my truck... the lease was in it final year on the '05, and Toyota was making some special good deals for us Tacoma owners to trade up to a 2010. My 2005 had 102,000+ miles on it, but was in otherwise good condition... Toyota resale value far exceeds other makes, I serviced the truck as recommended, my credit is good, and they made me an offer I couldn't refuse... So, I transferred to a new truck (sticker price $32k) with no money down and only $20 more per month than what I was paying already.

motoged - 12-11-2009 at 01:52 PM

David,
#1) Thanks for the route tip....might check out that option....

#2) Yep, that's the kind of logic I used to justify a new third bike....need the right tool for a specific application.....now we are both happier guys;D

BAJACAT - 12-11-2009 at 02:49 PM

For how many will be a problem to meet at the San Ysidro-TJ border on Feb-12(friday) to caravan from there or how many would like to meet us in Rancho Santa Ynez...
The dates untill now are.
Leave on Feb-12 , be on the Mission site by Feb-13, possibly leave the mission site on Feb-14(Sunday), if everything goes to plan.Drive to El Rosario to stay for the night, and then on Monday we can have breakfast and do a quick trip to Las Pintas... or maybe La Lobera... If you guys have any ideas that will be great too...

David K - 12-11-2009 at 03:15 PM

In Baja, I don't like to go by the time and never wear a watch! However, if there is going to be a crunch on the time available to do this, perhaps an examination of the real time on the road is needed?

All in this caravan will be at Rancho Santa Ynez by 9 am, if they aren't already there from the night before (Tijuana to Santa Ynez 6-7 hours.)

At Santa Ynez: Say we get loaded up Saturday morning and on the mission road by 9-10 am (after breakfast, loading the tent and sleeping bags, etc.) Then we will be at the mission between noon and 1 pm (if there are no mechanical problems).

It gets dark early, still in Feb. so that leaves setting up camp and relax time to about 3 hours (1-4 pm)... if there are no mechanical/ four wheeling problems going in.

If some people want to leave the next morning, well that's up to them. If others want to spend just one day enjoying the best off-the-beaten-trac site in Baja, then they could stay until Monday.

Mission Santa Maria back to the border will be about 10 hours (if no problems). If you have to get back Monday night, but don't want to rush on Monday or drive at night through the border region, then leaving Sunday for El Rosario might be good... for a more relaxed Monday trip north.

Perhaps some will drive out Sunday (mid-day or sooner) and others Monday and head all or part way back Monday... some may be able to cross on Tuesday to avoid any holiday traffic at the border... or just go at a more relaxed state.

Leaving the mission on Sunday for Hwy. 1, and then trying to get in a side trip to Las Pintas http://vivabaja.com/pintas (4 hrs. min. drive and explore time from Hwy. 1) is pushing it, without any night driving and then finding a room in El Rosario... or setting up camp, etc.

Have fun for sure... The Santa Maria trip alone will be enough to fill your night with many Baja, four wheeling dreams... for years... You will want to go back (if you can get out, that is)! I have been there three times... and look forward to more!

TMW - 12-11-2009 at 07:02 PM

Sounds like the plan is ready. Meet Saturday morning ready to go 9-10am. If your late come on down the mission trail, we'll be there.

Baja12valve - 12-11-2009 at 09:08 PM

I am up for it. I talked to my wife about it and she is too, especially if a group is going. I have been there before and have always wanted to return. Now that being said, I am also doing a photographic road trip with a friend (he is the photographer) right before. As of now I am not sure if I can swing it back to back. I will stay tuned.

David K - 12-12-2009 at 09:08 AM

You should bring your friend to Baja... that area is some of the most photogenic in Baja!

Baja12valve - 12-12-2009 at 10:43 AM

You are right, but my truck is a single cab. I can carry a ton of gear, but in the cab, either my wife or Dan will fit, but not both. Three is quite a crowd. Given the options, as good as a friend as Dan is, my wife is far better. No matter, my wife has a long, rich education, history and experience in photography. I know she would like it.

David K - 12-12-2009 at 10:44 AM

Point taken! ;)

BAJACAT - 12-13-2009 at 10:04 AM

Ok so is settle, I will be checking back and foward this thread. PRESIDENTS DAY 2010, will be knocking at our door in no time so get ready i got look for some spare 35' tires for my truck, I only have tHe stock tire, does anybody have a few 35's x 17 that don't need anymore $$$$...

PS. U2U ME IF HAVE ANY Q'S OR COMMENTS, AND REMEMBER THE MORE THE MARRIER...

Sounds good my friend I will be there, I will have a bottle of tequila to keep the cold away, oh yes..

David K - 12-27-2009 at 07:41 PM

10-4, Rancho Santa Ynez is a mile past Cataviņa... which is 76 miles or about 1.5 hrs. from El Rosario.

El Rosario is about 220 miles/ 5 hours from the border.

Just came back from a day trip to Ocotillo Wells to see how the new Tacoma and its new 4 wheel drive system works... VERY WELL!

Hope things work out so we can go to MSM next Prez Day Weekend!

BAJACAT - 12-31-2009 at 11:12 PM

how about the rest, at rancho SY..

BAJACAT - 1-5-2010 at 11:21 PM

39 DAYS AND COUNTING:rolleyes:

David K - 1-6-2010 at 04:50 PM

Jose, do you have a list of those planning on going? Sounds like TW, Kurt, Neal & Marian Johns, Cyanide41, edm1, fernando, Wilderone...?

Arriving Rancho Santa Ynez Friday PM or by 9 AM Saturday... Remember, it is cold up there at night in winter... real cold!

TRIP PRIMER:

Suggest any vehicle going to have min. 9" ground clearance, four wheel drive with rear lockers or limited slip differentials, like-new tires, some off road driving experience over big rocks and steep grades, and desire to have fun.

It is about 14.4 miles to the mission, and can take up to 3 hours. So, if we leave Santa Ynez by 10 am, we get to the mission with plenty of time to set up camp and 'chill' after the drive.

Sunday can be a day of exploring around the mission... and/or to the canyon rim where the road construction to Gonzaga Bay was abandoned 35 years ago... see the petroglyphs or hike the Camino Real... Maybe spot some bighorns?!

My previous 3 Mision Santa Maria trips:

2007: http://vivabaja.com/msm
2003: http://vivabaja.com/403

Panorama at the mission, 2007:
http://www.vivabaja.com/stamaria360.swf

The hardest part, is leaving... climbing up the widowmaker!:

(It's real fun and why you got four wheel drive!)

ROAD LOG

0.0 Rancho Santa Ynez, take road through left gate, north of ranch.

0.9 FORK, go left/ uphill.

1.8 Deep Gully, 4WD climb out (if this scares you, go back!).

2.4 Rock pile, a road to left, go straight/ right fork.

4.7 Cement monument off to left (tracks continue past monument).

5.6 Arroyo crossing with palms.

9.9 Peninsular Divide, view of Punta Final on the gulf.

13.3 Top of the 'Widowmaker' grade.

14.4 MISION SANTA MARIA

15.4 Road enters sandy Arroyo Santa Maria, after very steep downgrade.

15.7 Turn left, out of arroyo (may be hidden by plants). Tracks ahead in arroyo end in 1/4 mile.

15.9 El Camino Real climbs to the left, up hillside. The mission trail stays out of the canyon, along the north ridge and returns to the arroyo at the east end of the canyon.

16.0 Roadbed washed out. Park and hike on to end of bulldozed grade to see petroglyphs, canyon view, Indian trail to canyon bottom.

From my mission history data page:

Santa Maria de los Angeles 1767-1769

GPS: 29°43'54.5" 114°32'50.2"

When crops wouldn't grow at Calamajue, the Indians showed the Jesuits their oasis of Cabujakaamung
20 miles north, with its sweet water. The Jesuits moved their mission and
had only constructed palm log shacks when they were removed from California, in early 1768.

The Franciscans who replaced the Jesuits built the adobe ruins
that we see here. Santa Maria had a very brief mission history.
In 1769, the first Franciscan mission in California was founded by Junipero Serra some 35 miles away.
Named San Fernando by Father Serra on his long walk from Loreto to Alta California.
San Fernando was a superior mission site and soon
Santa Maria was reduced in status to a visita.

Yah, Baja Cactus Motel is the place to stay! Turista Motel or Ed's B & B as well if Cactus is full... Perhaps we will too... We hate the cold, and I am sure night will be chilly. Previous trips were in April (Easter Vacation) or May (Memorial Day) and the nights were fine.

Sounds like a good idea... Saturday morning drive to Santa Ynez to arrive by 10 am and begin to drive to 'Mission Impossible'!

Baja12valve - 1-7-2010 at 10:33 AM

Wow! This is turning into quite a 'Nomad turnout!

If my wife had her Green Card, we would definitely attend!!
My next project will be a stool to help her inside of the Jeep...

Ken, she doesn't have any type of temp permit untill the greencard arrives. My wife used here stamp passport untill she got her green card in the mail..

Yes David i was thinking the same it's going to be cold in catavina. I rather go visit la Lobera to see if the rest is open now. Have a late dinner in Mama espinoza and then rest In BC motel, and then leave early for breakfast at Catavina... maybe we can meet in El Rosario.

OMG, first time I see this thread,

My wife and I will be there for sure. I think we will drive all the way to cataviņa and camp but still have to plan because we have to ask for days off from work.

TW: I hope your wife gets better.

You can call the motel direct (phone number on their site http://bajacactus.com ) as I don't hear much from Antonio via email motel@bajacactus.com .

Since I don't know 100% if we will be doing the trip, (depends on financial sitiation and my work), we won't make a reservation. Turista Motel is an excellent back up if Cactus is full... It is a holiday weekend, afterall.

That sounds great too DK... will see as time gets closer to the date.

BIG NEWS FROM 'BAJA CACTUS' for Nomads!

David K - 1-11-2010 at 11:07 PM

I talked to Antonio tonight and told him we would like to stay at Baja Cactus on Friday, Feb. 12, 2010... as BajaCat suggested above.

Antonio ('BajaCactus' on Nomad) wants to invite all Nomads on the Mision Santa Maria group trip to stay at Baja Cactus Motel and will either have a special rate or if rates go up (as he fears may soon do to new taxes and costs in Mexico), Nomads will be charged the older, lower rate. In addition, Antonio will try and be there to greet us and have a special meal or breakfast for us, before we head off to tackle the Widowmaker!

Please email motel@bajacactus.com or call the motel directly (number on the web page http://bajacactus.com ) and reserve your room for Friday, Feb. 12 and tell the person you are with the NOMAD MISION SANTA MARIA GROUP.

Muchas Gracias Antonio!

Here is Antonio and Lorenia (and little Lorenia) talking with ROLI at MAMA ESPINOZA'S where we all had breakfast (2005):

In that picture, Antonio almost looks like Doug. For a quick second, I was caught by surprise, David!

Well here's how to tell us three apart!

I'm the shorter one, on the left...

Doug (BajaNomad) is in the center holding the plaque...

Antonio (BajaCactus) is on the right, wearing a tie...

Yes, we are on for MISSION: MISION SANTA MARIA! Baja Angel has the Friday and Monday off... So, we will drive to El Rosario on Friday... not real early, since it is only 6 hours from Oceanside to Baja Cactus... Once traffic is done, maybe 9 am.

Saturday morning, we should try and leave El Rosario by 8:30 to arrive at Rancho Santa Ynez by 10 am, meet Kurt and any others who are already there... then begin the trip to MISSION IMPOSSIBLE!

Seriously, only go if you have 9+ inches of ground clearance, good tires, don't mind getting dents in the underside, and have good 4WD with LOW RANGE. Locking Rear Differentials or Limited Slip Differentials would be HIGHLY RECOMMENDED.

IF not, a winch may be needed to pull yourself up the long Widowmaker grade or several short, steep grades...

This is a 'Jeep Trail' much like the Rubicon of Lake Tahoe area... the closest thing in Baja to the Rubicon, perhaps.

We will camp at the mission or near-by Saturday night and drive out Sunday by noon... and return to El Rosario for Sunday night... and have a relaxing Monday morning and return drive home.

Others that don't need to get back to work Tuesday or want to drive all the way home on Monday from the mission could stay a second (Sunday) night at the mission. I recommend that, if you can... It is a VERY special place... I originally thought we could, but want to not stress out with a long Monday drive or possible night time drive in the border area.

It doesn't look bad on this video, but strange variables creep in, like a wet swamp, or being overloaded and trying to drive out of the Widowmaker area. Your vehicle will respond differently than expected sometimes, making this a challenging trail that can sometimes be underestimated.

BAJACAT - 1-14-2010 at 08:19 PM

Sounds good DK, Im ready. your plan fits my needs , I got to be back in San Diego by Monday night. I couldn't get tuesday off.

I am very aware of the pitfalls. I have taken many pictures of bad roads and they always come out not nearly as intense as they were. If a road even looks remotely bad on video, it is 10x worse in real life. That is why I put in the "LOL".

David K - 1-15-2010 at 10:05 AM

Well, another thing that can happen is IF you own a Jeep Rubicon... and leave it in 2WD when you are off road!!!

When you leave Rancho Santa Ynez for the mission... THAT is when you engage the transfer case into H4 (4WD High Range) and lock the hubs (some newer rigs have automatic locking hubs when you go into 4WD).

There will be a few places where you will want to or need to go into LOW RANGE... for slow, safe crawling over the rocks and up or down steep grades.

On the Tacoma World Forums, I posted this for a new Tacoma owner who wasn't sure how to four wheel...

============================================================

Everyone with a 4WD Taco needs to enjoy their truck and what it was made to do! 4WD LOW (L4) is for CRAWLING Up or Down steep grades, or deep/ stuck in the mud situations... SLOW is the beauty of LOW RANGE... You won't break things if you crawl over them. Low Range is for maximum torque power to the tires, not speed. As has been said above, you can't go fast in L4.

Now, for the '09 and '10 Off Road TRD 4WD Tacos... We have the A-TRAC button to push in L4, this provides LSD (Limited Slip Differential) action so if one of the tires pops into the air or begins to spin from lack of traction, the opposite tire will now get power to pull you along.

Earlier Tacomas had open differentials only, so once a tire looses traction, only it will have power and spin, uselessly. That is why we loved the LOCKING REAR DIFFERENTIAL... That insured at least both rear tires got power, even if one of them lost traction or was in the air.

Maximum traction is 4L, A-TRAC and LOCKING RR DIFF. all working for you. This is for slow speed and to get out of the tough situation. Turn off the locker when you don't need it. A-TRAC will take care of you!

For those of you new to four wheeling your new Taco, most of your four wheeling will be in H4. This allows higher speed and fun in snow, sand, mud. H4 is shift on the fly (from H2) and is automatically in TRAC (LSD) for front and rear limited slip traction.

If you are in 2WD Taco (H2) and you become stuck (rear tires won't get you out) a quick push of the VSC OFF button turns on AUTO LSD for LSD braking action without regulating engine output. Those of us with 4X4 Tacos can just go into H4 for a better way out, but AUTO LSD is available in H2!

If you want to spin donuts (H4 or H2) and goof off, hold the VSC-OFF button for 5 seconds while stopped, and the '09/ '10 Taco will be just like the earlier ones with open differentials. Touch the button again or re-start your truck and TRAC + VSC is reactivated.

Have fun... I sure am!

BAJACAT - 1-15-2010 at 09:10 PM

David I got 10" inches of ground clearance. thats measuring from the diff, to the ground right?

Green Angels...

BajaCactus - 1-16-2010 at 01:35 AM

Hello my friends,

I made some calls and, if you want, I may be able to get you an escort from one of the Green Angels vehicles for your trip (http://www.sectur.gob.mx/wb/secturing/sect_eng_angeles_verde...)... this means that one of their units could tag along with you and be ready to help, in case any problems arise... just as a precautionary measure.

They could escort you all the way from Tijuana, Ensenada or El Rosario to Mision Santa Maria and back... it all depends on how you arrange your final schedule.

I do not wish to make your trip less exciting, and since I do not know what you are expecting from it, this is totally optional and up to you all... no one will feel bad if you decide you do not need them.

I only ask that if you do decide to take the offer, please let me know ASAP to secure the vehicle for you.

Also, once you have your schedule finalized, I would like to offer you all a treat at BajaCactus, maybe a nice Mexican style breakfast or dinner, so you are ready and strong to start your wonderful adventure on Saturday.

A big hug to all of you.

What a guy!

If the escort is armed for our protection, maybe? However, I think Green Angels are for mechanical issues?

I sure hope nobody has a breakdown on the highway if they plan on driving to the mission... Heck, I really hope that nobody breaks in there where there is no help to rescue you, other than us Nomads!

I am looking forward to seeing you again, Antonio... Thank you for your offer and the meal... How great!!

We do need to be on the road by 8:30 am Saturday... So, what would work out better... breakfast before we go or dinner on Friday?

How many Nomads are going to stay at Baja Cactus Friday night? Do you all have Friday off and can be there in time for dinner... or would a 7:30 breakfast be better? Of course it's up to Antonio... but some feedback may help.

We plan on coming out Sunday afternoon... so please reserve us a room then, too. Just can't get too much of Baja Cactus!!!

BAJACAT - 1-16-2010 at 10:17 PM

Same here Antonio I will like to stay in your place Friday Feb 12 and then on Sunday FEB 14, AND thanks for your offer..

[Edited on 1-17-2010 by BAJACAT]

BAJACAT - 1-16-2010 at 10:26 PM

Antonio i think is going to be hard to get all the nomads on the same schedule, due to some will leave earlier than other, and some will be at Santa Ynes already on Feb 12.

So lets see from the nomads attending this trip, who is planing to stay in Bajacactus, we need to know so Antonio will have and idea who will be there...and thanks in advance to Antonio for his great offer.

BAJACAT - 1-17-2010 at 09:45 AM

I just install my front recovery hooks on my RAm, just in case.

TMW - 1-17-2010 at 09:59 PM

Getting into and out of the mission is not for the faint of heart. Only a true blood off roader with the courage and determination of back hill exploration should attempt this dangerous trip. If you drive anything less than a GMC 4x4 you are taking your life into your hands and only I may be able to save you. But don't fear I have plenty of tow straps and each has the name of the type of vehicle it can safely pull out. But if you are in a jeep I may have to leave you.

No David that was me, with help of a fellow nomad not ELINVESTI8R..

David K - 1-18-2010 at 06:51 PM

Yup... one needs to GO SLOW... and creep over the boulders!

You want to be in L4/ 4LO/ 4WD LOW RANGE... and best to have the rear differential LOCKED and/or LSD (limited slip differsntials)!

David, I just saw this thread for the first time. How about my F250 4x4 long bed making this stretch? I would just leave the camper at Santa Inez, I guess. Not sure it would make it through the tough terrain. Or, I could ride with you guys. Gotta see if I can get the time off from my part time job.
