Santa Rosalia or B. Asuncion?

fishbuck - 12-10-2009 at 05:42 PM

I'm thinking about a trip over Christmas. I went to B. Asuncion last Christmas and it was fun but I was cold the whole time. Plus fishing was almost over for the year. I caught the last 2 yellowfin of the year.
I guess that Santa Rosalia is the yellowtail "sweet spot" that I have always thought existed. The spot where yellowtail "winter". Big ones!
The temp looks okay at about 75 degrees in S. Rosalia.
Any ideas?

Ummmm....go to Santa Rosalia?....dt

Bajahowodd - 12-10-2009 at 05:52 PM

Uh... okay. I've never stopped there before. Any suggestions on where to stay, who to fish with etc...

Are you talking about a flying vacation? Cause the last I heard, the runway in SR is not operable or whatever inside term the flyboys have for that.

I was in BA last week and it was already cold. I dont think I had daytime highs above 68 and there was wind every day. I think I wore shorts about 8 hours total in 8 days. But the fishing was still real good.

Ya, I would take atleast a day to visit Mulege. I'd love to see Playa Frables. But mostly it would be about fishing Santa Rosalia/San Marcos Island

dtbushpilot - 12-10-2009 at 06:01 PM

Sorry for the smartass reply fish, must need a beer.

The Hotel Morro is very nice and reasonable. I haven't fished out of there so I can't help you there but the hotel could probably fix you up. Mulege would probably be more fun for you and not much further.....dt

Ya, I'll be flying alright... in my Ford. I never did get my flying thing together this year. I found a plane, got the check-out and stuff. But just have not been able to cut loose the money. A round trip to B. Asuncion or Mulege will be about $1000. So it's a splurge forsure.
I have about 2 weeks vacation at Christmas so I can drive.
Last year I caught the tailend of the fishing. I think Thanksgiving is the perfect B. Asuncion time for weather and fish. But maybe even a little cool then too.

dtbushpilot - 12-10-2009 at 06:05 PM

Hook, you are correct, no public airstrip in SR. Closest one is Palo Verde and it was damaged in the hurricane, not sure if it was repaired. Also, nobody there and no transportation. If you are thinking of flying SR is probably not your best bet.....dt

I think San Marcos has a runway and you can get permission to land there or something like that.

Bajaboy - 12-10-2009 at 06:29 PM

Hey Buck-

I think you should go to BA so you can buy me a beer:biggrin: Seriously, if you're in town, it's going to be festive. And fishing can still be good.

Alex at serenidad can put you on YT and he goes to San Marcos all the time but can hunt them closer in too.
Jim - (Pescador) is a pro info source for the area too. lives at Caleta san luis i think its called by San Bruno, 10 miles south of town.
Palo verde is still closed by notam.
BA sounds cold!
mulege has nice days in dec.

go see Bob F. he has a boat too!

Diver - 12-10-2009 at 07:29 PM

There are more "loose" women in Santa Rosalia than Asuncion.
Decision made.

That's what I was thinking. It would be difficult to drive past Vizcaino without making a right turn.

Careful, some of them just look like women.

David K - 12-11-2009 at 08:59 AM

Hey Fishbuck, why is this question in the home building forum? :?::biggrin:

Pescador - 12-11-2009 at 09:10 AM

Well, the suggestions to go fishing at Mulege were settled once and for all time with the Governors Cup. 1st, 2nd, and 4th all came from Isla San Marcos and if you are going to fish San Marcos the last thing in the world you want to do is start out from Mulege unless you are some kind of masochist.
I can probably hook you up with Rigo Ojeda for the best yellowtail fishing you will ever experience, but you have to be prepared for wind days when you simply can not get out. December can be good fishing but I have seen times when we were locked on shore for up to 21 days at a time.
Yeah, and how come this is on the homebuilding site?

Iflyfish - 12-11-2009 at 09:21 AM

Diver,

Good thing you don't golf!

LOL!

Have fun Mike!

bajabass - 12-15-2009 at 05:27 PM

Mike, go to San Bruno. Small, clean hotel, 4 rooms. Hotel Serena? Pescador knows it, I am sure. Also check with the Romero family there. Relatives by marriage. They are commecial fisherman, but will take you out. If the wind comes up, you can usually hide inside at the island. Lots of bass, grouper, triggers, ect. 20 minutes to SR, about 40 to Mulege for night time fun! Wish I could join you, but work is picking up, so I'll be in Ensenada for X-mas, and back to work on Monday.

Pescador - 12-16-2009 at 07:30 AM

Shoot, I will hook him up with Rigo Ojeda and he can catch big yellowtail until his arms fall off. The other day I started throwing bait away cause I was too tired to catch another yellow.
