BBBB

Ken Cooke - 12-19-2009 at 10:05 PM

Anyone remember the Boojum Buddies Baja Bash events that happened all over Baja about 8 years ago? http://www.vivabaja.com/bbbb2/index.html

What is the chance that these will happen again? The last one hosted at Guadalupe Canyon was very cool. I sure miss those days...

wessongroup - 12-20-2009 at 06:03 AM

surfer jim - 12-20-2009 at 08:16 AM

The good old days can never return.....except as memories.

David K - 12-20-2009 at 11:32 AM

Well, BBBB started when M (Michelle) saw how much fun us Baja Internet people could have together at the Viva Baja parties I had in Southern California... Her idea was to have a party in Baja, sort of a weekend event where we camped or used a motel as a base.

Earle and Eric (of Amigos de Baja) attended the first BBBB as seen with Paulina and Mike Humfreville here:

The Cielito Lindo Motel/ Campground was the location of the first and last BBBB (#1 & #4).

BBBB #2 was at Guadalupe Canyon Hot Springs (Arturo's Campo) after Canyonman Rob showed us a movie about the place at Viva Baja #2.

BBBB #3 was at Alfonsina's and Rancho Grande, Gonzaga Bay.

M (Michelle) was not able to attend #3, and that is also the only one I didn't get to.

Some photos:

BBBB-1 July, 2001: http://www.vivabaja.com/van1/index.html

BBBB-2 Nov., 2001: http://www.vivabaja.com/bbbb2/index.html

BBBB-4 Sept., 2002: http://www.vivabaja.com/bbbb4/

This great photo of Mike Humfreville (taken by Bedman) was at BBBB-4:

Another photo from Bedman at BBBB-4 is of Bo, Whiskey Girl and 4baja out on a day run at Bahia de San Quintin:

Thanks for the photos and memories, David & M!

Great stuff!!:bounce:

BBBB All Events Were Great Fun

Gypsy Jan - 12-20-2009 at 04:31 PM

I remember reading the promos and then the after-party reports and suffering from severe "I wish I could have attended" envy.

Bummer you didn't make it... a lot of new friendships came from the get-togethers... Jeans started it by inviting us to have pizza before a Discover Baja/ Graham Mackintosh slide show. Then there was the gathering of web site hosts and others on the San Clemente pier in 2000... which led to the idea of having regular events that I named 'Viva Baja'. There were 4 Viva Bajas in Southern California (2000-2003) and 1 'Viva Baja Cactus', in Tijuana (2006).

Then the Matomi Canyon/ Shell Island President's Day caravans of 2001, 2004 and more since...

The BBBB events of 2001 and 2002.

The Pyramid Resort Baja Book Signing and wine tasting events of 2003-2008.

The Baja Cactus Cultural Party in Tijuana in 2004 and the Baja-Rosario Cultural Events in El Rosario of 2005-2007.

Photos from them are all posted on web pages at http://vivabaja.com and provide a look at your fellow Baja Internet people and Baja book authors all having fun!

DavidK, Maybe a Baja Picture Book?

Gypsy Jan - 12-20-2009 at 06:21 PM

Anyway, just a thought.

Well, that is kind of like what VivaBaja.com is... Have a look... Links to various web pages of Baja travel info first and some old stuff too, then links to my Baja trip photos from 1999 to 2009, then the Viva Baja party photos in one group, then links to other people's Baja photos who sent them to me to host... http://vivabaja.com

wessongroup - 12-20-2009 at 06:34 PM

BAJACAT - 12-21-2009 at 06:29 PM

David why they stop making this events..

David K - 12-21-2009 at 10:56 PM

As for BBBB, well... M doesn't even post anymore... and she was the first moderator on Nomad, I think. You can grow tired of doing them too much.. It is nice when someone else offers to help or take over for you!

It takes a lot of work to put this stuff together and I often had assistants, like at Viva Baja-4 (SallySouth and Brandi were big helpers) and Viva Baja Cactus (Antionio did almost everything).

The biggest event of its kind was Viva Baja #3 in Oceanside... We had the entire restaurant all to ourselves that Saturday and about 110 people showed up... More than we got RSVPs for, in fact. So, for Viva Baja #4, we kept the location secret to hold back the party crashers! LOL we love it that all baja people want to be there... but please RSVP as we have to have enough beer and good food... and room for you all!

SEE VIVA BAJA #3: http://vivabaja.com/vivabaja3 (Captain Mike flew in from Arizona and Larry Hahn flew in from Texas)! Book authors, Internet web site hosts, travel clubs, off road racers, and the Amigos de Baja Internet folks where there.

Viva Baja #4 was scaled back to about 65 guests... Walt Hussong attended!: http://vivabaja.com/vivabaja4

Lots of fun... but lots of energy necessary to make it happen and try and please the gang with good events and good food/ beer prices!

Keri started the Pyramid Resort Book Signing events after she attended Viva #4... so that helped maintain an annual event.

Antonio (Baja Cactus) wanted to do so much nice things for all of us and to tahnk Doug for Baja Nomad... Viva Baja Cactus was how we did that... See the award Doug (Baja Nomad) received... http://vivabaja.com/vivabajacactus

BAJACAT - 12-22-2009 at 09:20 AM

DK do you see a BBBB #5 IN THE FUTURE..

David K - 12-22-2009 at 09:46 AM

It is possible... It will be Viva Baja #6, since Viva Baja Cactus was #5 without the number being in the name.

Just not sure I have the same energy to make it happen without help.

What is needed:

1) A location that is convenient to those in the San Diego/ Los Angeles area (where most come from). A room large enough for 100+ people. Food service at a reasonable price. Bar service... at least wine and beer... So a restaurant with a meeting room or a hotel conferance room would be best.

2) Advance notice (3 mos. or more) so people can make their schedules work to attend... Saturday's seem to be the best day.

3) Door prizes... these are very fun to have... and they are donated by many of the guests. We have had hotel stays (Honeymoon suite at the San Nicolas in Ensenada every time was one, Ferna's hotel in Rosarito was another), books, maps, camping gear, tequila (Lizard Lips), and much more.

4) Video presentations (Marv Sherril's Las Animas field trip, Baja 1000 movie, El Camote's Baja Group Matomi and BBBB-1 videos, etc.)

5) Baja Show and Tell... bring something you have from or about Baja to share... including Baja businesses.

6) Plenty of social interaction to meet the people you have been reading so much here on Nomad...

See the photos, they tell much...

Viva Baja #1: http://vivabaja.com/vivabaja (2000, San Clemente)
Viva Baja #2: http://vivabaja.com/vivabaja2 (2001, San Clemente)
Viva Baja #3: http://vivabaja.com/vivabaja3 (2002, Oceanside)
Viva Baja #4: http://vivabaja.com/vivabaja4 (2003, Capistrano Beach)
Viva Baja Cactus: http://vivabaja.com/vivabajacactus (2006, Tijuana)

These are the good 'ol days. Eat them up.

surfer jim - 12-22-2009 at 10:39 AM

not when it comes to BAJA....when the BBBB's in Baja started you could travel anywhere (even at night!) ....camp alone....for me at least, never a thought of if it was safe to go whever I wanted or if my vehicle would be stolen.....no shootings at taco stands.....

I sure don't feel that freedom anymore and don't see it coming back.....still good times to be had but the GLORY days are gone.

4baja - 12-22-2009 at 06:27 PM

the bbbbs were a great party but i dont think they will happen soon. thanks dave for the pic of me, the wife and bo. we all had a great time and will join againn this june in BOLA.

Jim... you really need to go places in 4WD where you can't be seen from Hwy. 1... or anyone else...

Baja is full of such places and you will have all the solitude you could want!

Baja Angel and I spent the Forth of July weekend on Shell Island and didn't see or hear another vehicle the entire time.

Don't be so fast to give up on the wonders of Baja California!

You bet Steve... de nada! That photo is on the BBBB-4 web page on my web site anytime you want to find it http://vivabaja.com/bbbb4

When did you and Whiskey Girl tie the knot? Congratulations!

4baja - 12-23-2009 at 07:30 AM

we got hitched 2 1/2 years ago, been together over ten. thanks.

wessongroup - 12-23-2009 at 08:25 AM

DK, can only say...man, I'm really glad you like to take pictures !!

David K - 12-23-2009 at 09:11 AM

That is how I record history... The coolist photos of Baja are ones taken long ago... as so much has changed in some places (like Cabo) and so little in others (like Mision Santa Maria)!

The places are changing/ disappearing... taking a photo 'preserves' it in a way that nothing else can.

People of Baja and who love Baja are great too... Seeing how similar we all really are validates that our love for Baja is not really so odd or rare!

Bedman - 12-25-2009 at 01:27 AM

There are still BBBB's. We just use other titles now. Like the last one we had 11/05/09. We called it Beach Bob's Birthday Bash. About 50 people or so showed up for the one night party. It was held in BOLA. Food, adult beverages, music and good friends.

There will be more... all you have to do is tell a few friends and Viola...BBBB.

I'll try and add a few pictures. It's been a while since I posted my pictures, so i may have a little trouble getting them here.

Hola Bedman!! Merry Christmas... We sure miss you here.

How is Emma and Daisey?

Happy New Year!

Debra - 12-25-2009 at 03:04 PM

The BBBB's were the best times of all! Haven't been to the Viva Baja parties (I hear a great time was had by all) too far to come for a one night event.

Bedman - 12-26-2009 at 02:01 AM

Emma and I are Happy and Well. Daisy came down with Glaucoma last April and had one eye removed and surgery on the other due to the Glaucoma. She does pretty good for an old Baja dog. Still the fastest one eyed dog on the beach...except when she runs into things.

Our little house on the bay is almost completed. Stop by some time and have a cold one.

Hey.....? where'd my Avatar go?

As always,

Steve, Emma and Daisy
