I declare! Part 2..another question

Gerald - 12-19-2009 at 10:53 PM

If I wanted to bring an empty shipping container to a lot I have in Baja to use as storage. How much would it cost me?
I have been told its a percentage of the retail price i got it for. Can they do the paperwork there at the border or do I have to get that done before I cross. What is the process?

You will have to go to the Otay border crossing, and into secondary and then wait for a customs inspector.

The guiding mantra is the more paperwork you have, the better. Get an appraisal of value, have a US notary sign it, then get an apostille, then get it all translated into Spanish.

The effort and cost for this pays off on the back end, reducing time spent arguing with a government official who just might want to make you miserable because he is bored or likes to jerk gringos around.

That being said, the inspectors we have interacted with have all been smart, knowledgeable and efficient.

Example, we imported a propane diesel generator a few years ago - brand new. There is a HUGE difference in the import tax on a gas generator as opposed to propane. The lady inspector opened up the box, looked at the inner workings and approved our claim as to what it was.

Because of our documentation, we saved maybe $1500 dollars on import taxes.

Gerald, sorry for the "hi-jack of your question.

For all you nosey people out there, and you know who you are, I Howard, have not started this thread! “I have no intentions of disparaging your neighborhood with shipping containers.”

Thank you Gerald for allowing my intervention as you have nothing to do with my posting. I have thought about doing the same thing and would appreciate any feedback you can give with your experiences.

Good Luck

You'll need a Mexican carrier to bring the container into Mexico, to your lot.

You can buy containers here as well.
