Calimax Supermarket Using Biodegradable Bags

Gypsy Jan - 1-8-2010 at 11:04 PM

The header kind of says it all.

My purchases at the Calimax supermarket in Rosarito today were placed into the familiar bright yellow plastic bags, but there was a new message printed on them.

They now claim that the bag will degrade in thirty-six months.

I'm so glad and hope this really works! The people who pack the groceries just can't understand why I ask to them to give me less bags. They almost use one for every item, same as Vons.

The thing is I think that they need to be exposed to the sun and air in order to disintegrate.

Bio Bags

It has always been my assumption that the Mexicans were using degradable bags since they'd often fall apart before you got home. NEVER use one for the Poop Paper in the Bano.

Awww, Bill.........have times gotten that tough? A roll of TP can't cost so much that you choose to use plastic bags instead.
Gimme your address and I'll send you a roll complete with instructions.:lol:

Doing it the Mexican way

MrBillM - 1-9-2010 at 11:28 AM

I'm Assuming that Dennis is just suffering from a comprehension disconnect. The Toilet paper goes INTO the Plastic Bag. It's the Mexican way, especially with a Septic Tank. I've got one tank that was first used in 1982 and has never needed pumping.

TP is made these days to disintegrate in a tank. Single ply works best and it's hard to find. Scott 1000 is one of the few and I can only find it in the states.
One of my worst experiences continues to be using a restroom at a gas station. If I had a gas station here, I'd try to convert the patrons to the advantages of a Bidet although some of them would undoubtedly confuse it with a drinking fountain. Wouldn't want that.

A properly designed septic system should rarely need to be pumped. I lived in Topanga for a number of years, and the only time most folks had the pumper was when the property was transferring ownership. sort of like not leaving your furniture behind when moving.

And Dennis was spot-on about the public restroom ick.

Public Restrooms in Baja

Gypsy Jan - 1-9-2010 at 06:16 PM

Somehow, in all my years in Baja, I have managed to avoid using public restrooms. Careful planning or cunning? (Look honey, that looks like a nice hotel/restaurant, let's go in and ask them about their rates/menu.)

But anyway, I digress. Hubby tells me that he has always found the restrooms in the Pemex stations (Northern Baja) and at the toll booths on the Cuota (pay road) to be acceptably clean.

The public restroom at La Bufadora is a pay-to-go setup, with the toll lady issuing you two pieces of toilet paper upon entrance, but it was also very clean on the times I visited with friends.

This thread has certainly gone to the toilet !!

Bright yellow degradeable bags ??
It MUST take extra dye to make them yellow.
Why not their raw/natural color ?
Or light green or brown so they will blend into the landscape until they degrade ?
Just thinking ....

Bajahowodd - 1-9-2010 at 06:46 PM

I recall the day when going to a public restroom in Mexico meant no toilet seats, let alone no TP, or soap, or towels. And that includes airports. I'm fairly certain that as Pemex has granted so many franchises, and the main focus of the franchisees has been the profit from their convenience stores, they are hellbent to provide clean restrooms. They have come a long way.

This Mexican habit drives me nuts. Yeah, I know many homes have small pipes that clog which is why they do it. My relatives put their used TP into the wastebasket instead of flushing it down the toilet. Just gross. I'd rather hit it with the plunger thank you. Even worse when a puppy gets into it- yup, been there. They don't think anything of pouring grease down the kitchen sink drain though.

It's Not Just Mexican

Many third world countries never made the total transition from pit to porcelain. here in central Orange County, I was shocked the first time one of my Vietnamese neighbors left a "present" in our waste basket.

The Scoop on Poop

MrBillM - 1-10-2010 at 09:17 PM

Doing a cursory Web Search on the Paper down the pipe question, I found it interesting that there were a number of links regarding Travel in Greece, including a discussion on the Fodor website from 2008. It seems that outside of Athens, it is not acceptable to flush the paper.

Are there other areas in Europe where such is common or is there something different about Greek Plumbing ? Other than Deviant practices known as Greek.

I think they're still using Parchment Paper. It's a state mandated tradition to maintain an image.
It's my understanding that, to honor the historical method of hygyene in Mexico, the mandate will be the use of corn cobs for the same purpose.
Invest in corn futures and soften your diet.
