LOST DOG - Punta Prieta/Chapala Area

 Pages:  1

AmyT - 1-9-2010 at 09:04 AM

Please help us find our dog! There was an accident on Sunday, January 3rd around 2 pm at KM 224 1/2 on highway 1, 55 km north of the Bahia Los Angeles turn off at Punta Prieta. Our dog was inside the van that rolled and when he got out he ran off into the desert and we were unable to find him after searching hours and days.
His name is Pickle. He is a tan lab/great dane mix. He is very friendly, but I'm sure very scared. He was wearing a collar with a tag that had our numbers on it; both U.S. and Mexico. He was last seen by a witness, running west into the desert at km 224 1/2.
The reward is currently $300 usd, but I am willing to do what it takes to get back my sweet boy.
If anyone has seen him or knows of anything, please let me know.
My email address is: amy.thomas@me.com
Phone numbers: Mexico cell 045-624-141-6121, Mexico home 01-624-172-6119, U.S. cell 619-851-4959, U.S. home 619-270-9644
Thank you,

Amy,

What town / landmarks are near KM 224? I'll be driving south later this month and will look for him. He looks like a survivor.

Paulina - 1-9-2010 at 10:19 AM

Amy,

My heart hurts for your family and for Pickle. I hope your seach has a happy ending.

Sorry, I forgot that part. I just edited that.
It was 55 km north of the Bay of LA turn off at Punta Prieta. Nothing around. No services. No cell phones. Worst part of the Baja to have an accident.
I would imagine he could be anywhere at this point. Maybe he found a ranch?
Thank you for your efforts to help!

This is between El Pedregoso (the mountain of boulders west of the highway) and Laguna Chapala.

Amy & Ryan,

I am so sorry that you've lost your dog! I know how devastated I would feel if I were in your shoes! I wish you the best of luck in getting Pickle back.

Have you posted this on some of the other baja websites? Like the online sites that the off-road racers visit? Try posting on Baja.net, Race-Dezert.com, ThumperTalk.com (in the Baja section), Advriders.com also has quite a few riders from baja.

If I think of any more, I'll post them. The more people who are aware, the better!!

All the best and good luck!!

AmyT - 1-9-2010 at 02:04 PM

Thank you so much!
I have posted on other Baja websites, but not the off-road ones. That is a great idea and we'll do that asap.
We do feel like we've lost a child. I just can't imagine what that would feel like.
Thanks for all of the suggestions and support!

David K - 1-9-2010 at 06:08 PM

There is hope... In 2003, on our way to Mision Santa Maria we came across a dog along the road, 12 miles east of Cataviņa... and no owners. It was 'Inky', an older 'Baja' dog adopted by gringos, from Todos Santos... With a tag and phone number... She had run off while the owners were camping along Hwy. 1, north of Cataviņa, heading to their U.S. home... we later found out.

Hope you can be re-united with your pet!

AmyT - 1-9-2010 at 06:44 PM

Thank you David K! That gives me hope that Pickle is still out there and WILL be found.

bajaguy - 1-9-2010 at 07:12 PM

Amy

Make a "wanted" poster in English on one side and in Spanish on the other. Use a color photo and indicate reward. Include both Baja (if you can) and US phone numbers

Flood highway 1 with the posters at all stores, gas stations and houses, phone poles whatever....get his photo and the posters out.

Try and get the posters to delivery people (water, propane, soda, beer and bread truck drivers) the police and any fire departments.

Leave posters at any houses or ranchos in the area

Also paper BOLA and the hotel at the junction

Don't forget to leave posters....(and soda, candy and cookies) at any military checkpoint you come to.

The best way to find a lost pet is to get the word out to Everybody

Good luck

lizard lips - 1-9-2010 at 10:39 PM

It wasn't for a lost dog but people that I posted flyers everywhere from TJ to Cabo and it helped. Remember Bajaguy?

bajaguy - 1-9-2010 at 11:05 PM

Lips, that was a great idea, maybe we can use it to find the doggie!!!!

Doug/Vamonos - 1-10-2010 at 09:08 AM

Very sad. I feel your pain. In August I rolled my car at KM 247, not far from you. Had my dogs in the car also. We were all ejected but by some miracle were not badly hurt. Moby had a broken pelvis and two broken ribs and Lucky had no scars at all (the name must work!). I was unconscious on the ground and when a mexican woke me up I remember seeing Lucky racing across the desert chasing rabbits! Anyways, long story. Four months later and we are all pretty much healed up. I'm driving down tomorrow and I'll be building a little memorial on the spot so I'll be there a few hours with my dogs. We'll see if they can find their Baja cousin. We've all seen dogs survive as they trek across the desert. They quickly learn to find what they need. Best wishes.

AmyT - 1-10-2010 at 10:18 AM

Oh Doug! I'm sorry to hear about your troubles. I hope you are all healing well. I would so appreciate you hollering out for Pickle. I have a flyer I've made, that if you wouldn't mind puting some up for me, I would be happy to pay for the coppies and such. I can email it to you, if you are willing. Safe travels!

bajaguy - 1-10-2010 at 12:20 PM

Amy

If you can post the flyer here, other Nomads can see it and maybe distribute

grace59 - 1-10-2010 at 02:56 PM

Amy, I am so sorry about your accident and the loss of your Pickle. I hope that someone finds him soon and returns him to you. I know that you both must be scared and I will keep you both in my thoughts. Please keep us posted.

absinvestor - 1-13-2010 at 05:17 PM

We're leaving Seattle for Baja this weekend. We will stop and let our dogs out in the general area of where your dog was last seen. We had a relative loose a hunting dog in Oregon for over a month. After the relative had given up all hope of finding the dog, we took our dogs to the area and sure enough in less than an hour all 3 dogs showed up at our motorhome. Needless to say his dog had lost a few pounds, had bloody feet etc but was amazingly healthy. Our dogs had never met the relative's dog but dogs seem to attract one another. Our dogs (golden retriever and australian shepherd) have no special skills but if your dog is in the area maybe he'll follow ours home for a good steak dinner.. We also lost a prior dog for over two months when it took off in a thunder and lightning storm. After 9 miserable weeks he was returned to us by a wonderful family that found one of our many flyers. Keep the faith- you have many many dog lovers praying for a happy ending. Ron and Patty

Sharksbaja - 1-13-2010 at 05:41 PM

What a bummer. There is hope tho. My dog was dognapped or ?? in Mulege. I spent the better part of a week trying to find him to no avail. I then posted around town a bunch of flyers with his picture and offered a $50 reward.

Within 2 days a fellow called and said he found him down at Stanispac running around. That's 15 miles south.

If you can get a poster like that put them around Catavina, the Bola turnoff and El Rosario, Carmelitas', the Pemex, and the GN checkpoint you might strike paydirt. Perhaps a Nomad heading south could help you to get some put up.

Best of luck to you, so sorry to hear of your terrible dilemma.

AmyT - 1-13-2010 at 08:50 PM

Thank you Nomads for your inspiring stories and prayers. I am trying to keep up the hope.
I have given a flyer to several people who have offered to help, but not sure that any have gone up yet.
I feel so helpless.
Every message helps me to keep the faith. I just keep waiting for that 1 message or phone call that Pickle has been found.
Thank you!
Amy

David K - 1-13-2010 at 09:34 PM

Amy... if you could, post the flyer here... Nomads in Baja can make copies of it, and more will see them.

IF you can't figure out how to post it here, please scan and email or email the file/ photo of the flyer if it is on your computer... to me, and I will post it here for you.

My email is infoATvivabaja.com (AT=@) and put BAJA DOG in the subject line.

It might be a good idea to have some in Spanish too.:light:

David K - 1-14-2010 at 09:33 AM

A photo of the dog (with his name below), date, location it ran from, a reward amount (say 'dollars', not just the $ symbol which is used for pesos, too) and contact info. should do it!

Amy, I will be driving that stretch a couple of times between now and mid-February. I will stop at all ranchos along the Highway and inquire for you.

Does 'Pickles' come when called by strangers? Any unusual habits or foods in case I find him and he rides in the truck or motorhome with me?

Thanks for offer of a reward, but not necessary for me. If I do find him at a rancho, I'll pay them the 300 and you can reimburse me later. I love pooches, too, and I hope we nomads find him for you.

Amy, you have come to the right place, lots of dog lovers on these Baja sites. They will go above and beyound to help find Pickle.

Everytime I see the heading "Lost Dog" I cringe remembering loosing my guy last summer in BOLA (I found him the next day, my guy looks alot like yours, I feel your pain.)

Be assured that everybody reading this thread are talking to others, who are talking to others. Hang in there, prayers are with Pickle.

Does his collar have your phone number and his name on it? Is he microchiped?

Thank you Pompano!
Pickle does know his name and would come if called by anyone. He is very social. He loves people and if he isn't terrified in hiding, he will probably jump all over you out of excitement. Watch out; he might pee a little too :) He will probably jump right into your vehicle and ride like a good boy. He likes to feel safe. I can't think of any specific unusual habbits other than just being his usually goofy self. And I'm sure he would eat anything! We usually feed him dry food...
He did have a chain collar with a bone shaped name tag with our phone numbers on it.
I am so thankful for people like you willing to help find our loved one.
Safe travels!

Best of luck Amy for finding your pup. I think for all Nomaders that it would help if you post for a lost animal, put the area or city in the HEADLINE of the post...that way you may get people who were just in that area as opposed to all of Baja.

Done. Thank you for the suggestion.

David K - 1-16-2010 at 11:44 AM

Better still... since it was north of Laguna Chapala... That would be the Cataviņa-Laguna Chapala area... closer to El Pedregoso (the lone boulder hill).

Best wishes finding him!

AmyT - 1-23-2010 at 10:18 AM

Please keep the search going!
I feel he is still out there, maybe at a ranch and they just don't know he's missing and that there's a reward.
Thank you, Pompano, for your call the other day. I truly appreciate your help.
Saludos,
Amy

Check the BajaPony Express.

=======================

Happy needs a home! Happy was a very unhappy dog who had been dumped outside of Catavina. After wandering for days he was picked up by a very kind lady who brought him home with her to recover from starvation, dehydration and a serious wound. After months of TLC Happy is now available for adoption.
Happy is approximately 2 years old. He represents the best (?) of several breeds, part beagle, rottie and German Sheppard. Definitely a great representative of a Baja dog. Happy has been neutered, has his shots and is now very healthy and did I mention happy?
Now all he needs is his forever home. He will be a very grateful, loyal and loving companion.
If you are interested please contact Linda at lindaschwartz46@hotmail.com

Paulina - 1-23-2010 at 10:54 AM

Salsa,

Are you reporting this because you might think it is the same dog?

When someone writes that a dog was "dumped" somewhere, I hope that the author knows that for certain. Poor Pickle was hardly dumped.

Dogs run the opposite direction in Baja for many reasons. I hope that the dog you are posting about might be Pickle and if not that Pickle is found that that this Baja dog you posted also finds his way to a good home.

I just sent the person shown in that ad a msg asking her to look at the pic of Pickle posted here to see if it's the same dog. Wouldn't that be a happy ending?:bounce:

Paulina - 1-23-2010 at 06:46 PM

Very.

longlegsinlapaz - 1-23-2010 at 07:25 PM

:no:Yeah, I figured it was too much of a stretch....the response I received:

"Hi again, It's not the same dog, but now I have the picture and can keep an eye out for him when driving back north. I sure hope he is found!!! And you're right, better to err on the safe side, just in case."

Salsa - 1-23-2010 at 09:47 PM

Well, I tried.

I had to see if it was the same dog. It was to much coincidence to ignore.

Maybe next time

Don:no:

longlegsinlapaz - 1-23-2010 at 11:22 PM

No Salsa!! My comment wasn't directed towards you! I was saying I also thought there was a possibility that it could have been the same dog...just as you did! The "too much of a stretch" was a comment directed towards my own post about a "possible happy ending".

You did good connecting the Pony Express found dog to the Baja Nomad lost dog & posting the info here!!! :bounce:

AmyT - 1-25-2010 at 08:39 PM

Thanks you guys! I did get an email from Linda. And unfortunately, it wasn't Pickle.
At least my message is still spreading. For that, I am thankful.
And it sounds like Happy is in good hands.
I just pray my Pickle is in just as good of care.
Keeping the faith,
Amy

grace59 - 1-26-2010 at 06:59 AM

Amy, each time I see that you posted, I hope it is to say that Pickle has been found alive and well. I am keeping up the faith for you! I know how sad and worried I would be if my Coco was out there lost somewhere. Be positive!

Dog Lost in Baja California

BajaNews - 1-27-2010 at 01:08 PM

http://www.surfline.com/surf-news/letter-of-the-week/dog-los...

January 26, 2010

After living in Cabo/San Jose del Cabo the past 8 years, my husband (an avid surfer) and I decided we needed to move back to San Diego for a job opportunity. This wasn't an easy decision but nonetheless, it had to be done. So we packed up the car with our stuff, as well as our friend's van with our 3 beloved dogs and headed north on January 2nd. Our friend, Paul "DD" Robinson, is a shaper from Idaho and was heading up to get supplies and shape some boards for his friends back in Cabo. On day two (January 3rd), the car that Paul was towing with his van, got a flat tire which caused him to lose control of the cars and roll 2 1/2 times off the side of the road. Thankfully, no one was badly injured (a couple of scrapes and bruises and two totaled cars) but in all the trauma, we could not recover one of our dogs. A witness saw him run across the highway into the desert like a racing dog. But after searching for hours and days, we could not find Pickle. We have been so heartbroken and I feel I have lost a member of our family. It's been over 3 weeks now and I have not heard anything from any of the posts I have made on the various Baja websites or from the flyers that friends and strangers have posted along the area. I feel he is out there somewhere and I am hoping someone on their Baja adventures just might find him.

Here are the details:
The accident was on Highway 1 at km 224 1/2, 55 km north of the Bay of LA turnoff, in the Punta Prieta/Chapala/El Pedregoso/Cataviņa area. He was last seen running from the east side across the highway to the west into the desert. But he could be anywhere, including a ranch. I am offering a reward for his return or any information someone might have about him. He is such a sweet dog but I know he is so scared and alone.

Great idea, Gypsy Jan...I added a postscript to my Tecate - Mulege Trip report. No sign of Pickles yet, but hope remains.

I continue to root for a happy ending to this story.

Thank you!

absinvestor - 2-4-2010 at 05:43 PM

Amy- we are running one day late but we and the dogs will be looking for Pickle Saturday (Feb 6.) We had an interesting conversation with Irene of Posada Don Diegos. We were just having a general conversation about her present and past dogs etc and I mentioned that a dog was lost and we were going to look around on our way to Bahia de Los Angeles. She said, oh, that must be "Pickle." Looks like the word has gotten out and lots of people in Baja know the story and the Baja dog hunt is still on lots of peoples minds.. Surely that dog is going to show up!!!!! Ron and Patty

David K - 2-4-2010 at 06:57 PM

Irene is a Nomad, so she saw it here when we all did... I would bet!

The power of Baja Nomad! :light::smug:

AmyT - 2-5-2010 at 05:29 PM

Awesome! I am so happy to hear the word is still out there!
Pickle is such a great guy. He truly deserves to be found.
Thank you Nomads for all of your support and help!
It mean's so much to me.

Amy, sorry to say we didn't find him. We stopped at two hotels and asked around, and talked to a local on a bike that was about 15 miles north of where Pickle was last seen. We also got off the road about 4 miles where you lost him and let our dogs run off lease for about an hour in hopes that they might encounter a strange new friend named Pickle- unfortunately nothing. We will be leaving Bahia de Los Angeles midmorning tomorrow and will keep our eyes open when heading south. Sorry we don't have any good news but we are still hopeful that that guy will show up!! Ron and Patty

Bajahowodd - 2-7-2010 at 04:46 PM

Is anyone going to consider, that after all this time, and given the wilderness nature of the area, that the pooch has either become the property of some other family, or has fallen prey to the wild. I hope that is not the case. Really. Hope springs eternal. But, given the situation, .... sorry.

Bajahowodd, You Ask a Logical Question

Gypsy Jan - 2-7-2010 at 05:52 PM

But. why give up hope when searching for a lost and loved family member, no matter how long the odds are?

Every time Pickle gets mentioned, maybe someone out here in our vast and wide reaching internet community will make a connection to a certain Great Dane who would like to go home to her family.

We have personally failed in dog rescues more times that I want to think about; call us stupid, we keep trying.

irenemm - 2-7-2010 at 08:15 PM

David your right of course I did see it here. I did not claim other wise.

Ron and Patty hope your had a good trip.

I hope pickles shows up. Has anyone looks back where you lived before you headed North? Maybe he went home.

bajafam - 2-7-2010 at 10:22 PM

Here's another nomad hoping your doggie finds his way home. I know we've had a couple of close calls, and can't even imagine leaving one of our mutts behind :(

Bajawodd,
Have you ever lost a loved one? Pickle IS a member of our family. He is an innocent, unique character with so much personality and love. I feel I have lost a child and I don't think those parents ever give up until there is reason to. He has not been found, therefore he has not been found dead. Do you think I haven't thought this might be a possibility? I just can't allow myself to go there. Personally, I feel your coment was unnecessary. I have been blessed by so many wonderful strangers, offering their help in the search. And I just couldn't do it with out them. Thank you!
Almost daily I am contacted by people sharing similar stories where they have found their loved one months later! Living at ranches with their tags still attached!
Call me crazy, stupid, whatever, but I will not give up hope. Because without hope, we have nothing. I have a hole in my heart that only Pickle can fill.
Sincerly,
Pickle's Mom

Thanks so much you guys! That's so cool you had the dogs help!
I am so thankful for people like you!
Safe travels!

There has been a possible siting of Pickle at the military check south of Cataviņa, north of Villa Jesus Maria!
This is the first close call!
If anyone is in the area would you PLEASE have a look around? Maybe ask at the check point?
I have upped the reward to $500, if this helps.
Thank you for your support!

Good News, Amy! Please keep us posted. There are so many of us out here that are rooting for Pickle to be found and reunited with his family!

KAT54 - 2-9-2010 at 05:16 PM

Amy
Do not you think if you love this dog so much you should drive to Catavina and look for him?
You seem to want others to do the work.

WARNING!!!

I have lost a number of pets in my lifetime. They range from a hamster to a canary to cats and dogs. I am not too proud to admit that I have often cried upon their demise. We humans just live longer than do our domesticated pets. I am not very heartened by a supposed sighting down near Jesus Maria. That is a very long distance from where you lost Pickle.

That said, my advice to you is to visit your local animal shelter and acquaint yourself with the beautiful beasts that are one step away from their demise. Maybe take home a couple of those sweet, affectionate creatures. If and when Pickle shows up back home, he'll be more than happy to find he's got a family.

Dear Kat,
Yes! I would love to drive there myself! Unfortunately, I have no one to accompany me and I don't think it's prudent of me to go alone.
I am seeking the help of the kindness of strangers, which has been a blessing, but has been a difficult thing to do. Depending on others doesn't always get you the results you want.
I am not trying to have "others do the work," I am simply trying to use my resources I have available to me at this time.

Thanks for you suggestion though.

P.S.
By all means, I would not want someone to go out of their way, but so many people drive the Baja and drive right throught this area, it just makes sense that someone might be able to have a look. Besides, I am offering a reward, so their efforts would be compensated for.
Amy

Well, since you don't know me, I guess I should explain that my whole life I have rescued animals. Of the 8 years I lived in Baja, I volunteered at the shelters & fundraisers, fostered and rescued countless dogs and cats, of which Pickle was one of. He has 2 dogs and 2 cats waiting at home for him. So, another dog is not what I am looking for.

Thank you for your suggestion though.

You are going beyond what a lot of people would do with your efforts Amy. Ignore the idiotic comments and don't give up. I believe your dog will be found.

grace59 - 2-9-2010 at 10:07 PM

Amy, Do not listen to the blatherings of the insensitive on this board. What makes us human is the ability to dream and to hope. Without hope we are, all of us, as lost as Pickle is right now. As silly as it is....I don't know you or Pickle, but I know what it is like to love....you can't just easily replace a pet with another....they are our kids.....each is it's own character and cannot be replaced. I still have hope in my heart that Pickle will be found...alive and full of kisses for his waiting mom.

bajafam - 2-10-2010 at 09:48 AM

Pickle's Mommy ~ again I am sending thoughts out to Pickle that he somehow finds his way back to you. I can NOT believe that there are Nomads out there that are being so, well, mean!! I certainly hope that they don't need any kind of assistance in the near future ~ even kind words of hope in a desperate moment. As Nomads, we should all rely and hope for the kindness of strangers...that is one of the beautiful things about Baja!

When our mutts went astray in Abreojos, my kids and I spent the better part of the afternoon looking for them...thankfully another camper had spotted them in town and brought them back to us. We didn't ask for help, but it came to us.

If there are some Nomads that do not wish to help, they obviously do not have to. But for goodness sakes, Poor Amy is not asking us all to drive up and down Baja looking for Pickle, just giving us the heads up if we happen to be there to keep our eyes peeled. I wish we were going sooner so that we could help look, but for the moment, all we can do is hope!

tripledigitken - 2-10-2010 at 09:53 AM

Amy,

You are a Saint in how you have handled some of the comments here. We will be passing through the area where you lost Pickles this Friday, so you'll have some more eyes looking.

Thank you morgaine7, LancairDriver, grace59, bajafam, tripledigitken and all the others for your support!

Ken, thank you for keeping your eyes peeled!
He may be at the military check south of Cataviņa...
Keeping my fingers crossed.
Let me know if you hear of anything.
Thanks so much!

I sure hope it is Amy... but that checkpoint is about 100 miles south of the accident location. Maybe someone picked up the dog at El Pedregoso and gave him to the military at El Tomatal junction?

KAT54 - 2-10-2010 at 01:11 PM

I am not being mean.
Amy is taking advantage of good people.
She lives in Todos Santos.
She does not work.
She should go get her dog.
This is the responsible thing to do.
She is playing the victum.
People love to have people feel sorry for them.
By not looking for her dog she has condemed it to death in the desert or
a new life as a mexican dog always searching for food and water.
This is her dog.
Amy needs to search for her dog herself.
I will bet there are not 1000 people living in the area she lost the dog.
No excuses.
Go get the dog

David K - 2-10-2010 at 01:22 PM

KAT54,

Amy searched for days for the dog... can you read, she told us the story of the accident near El Pedregoso?

Basically, the dog is gone... In a rare chance of hope, she has only asked others driving by to keep an eye out for it.

In 2003, we came across a dog, 9 miles east of Cataviņa on the road to Mision Santa Maria... with ID tags. 'Inky' got loose and ran off while here owners were camping next to Hwy. 1. They spent days looking for her, before finally moving on. We found Inky... and someone could very well find Pickles! It is worth asking.

I decided I am not going to respond to this, other than to say,
I AM GOOD PEOPLE!

DENNIS - 2-10-2010 at 04:43 PM

Didja do what Jesse should do for his lost cats? Offer a big reward? Big rewards are rewarded with big rewards.
I havn't kept up with this thread, but it seems it's gone over the edge of understanding and goooey help stuff.
Too bad.

David K - 2-10-2010 at 04:45 PM

I think all of us 'normal' Nomads know you are GOOD Amy... There is a small group of DRAMA seekers on here, that bash/ attack/ counter anything just to get a rise... I usually play their game longer than I should...

It is just hard to believe such ignorance or hate exists on a place where we come because we all love Baja!

As with politics, I may not always agree with what a Nomad has to say... But, I will defend that person's right to say it!

Fairbanks47 - 2-10-2010 at 04:53 PM

KAT54- Aren't you the person who has to wear the pointy foil hat?
You have made some very ignorant and close to slanderous comments about Amy T. From the inaccurate information you have posted, you give the impression to other Nomads that you personally know her. It is a disservice for anyone to make comments about anyone without having the facts, and you sir or madam do not have them!

if it was my dog lost out there, i would go there and look, probably not go home until finding pooch.
amy, why were you not there ASAP looking until you found the dog? how many days did spend on location looking?
sadly, much time has passed and stray city dog in remote desert is probably in doggy heaven.

You cannot know what you "would do" or could do until you are in a certain situation....and I am kind enough to hope that none of you ever have to be in a heart breaking situation like this. It is sad how cruel and bitter some people can be.
