Thinking of heading down to San Quintin soon - We usually drive the Ensenada to Tecate road to avoid TJ. I know lots of improvements going on, but
wondering how they're doing lately, how far they've paved the new road and how much is "dirt driving"especially if rain is coming - don't want to go
through a mud pit!

In a thread by 'NewToBaja' on 12/31/09 I posted the following map showing the various ways of getting TO Tecate from Ensenada to avoid the
construction on Mex. 3.
If you reversed the arrows, it would be the options for you.
The shortest detour is to enter Guadalupe at the Pemex station and proceed through town on the NEW paved road out to (free) Mex. 1 near El Tigre, and
drop into Ensenada that way... all paved now.

i was that road on the first...
there is about 10 miles of dirt
lots of work and equipment
and you need to go a little slower

i drove my motorhome up that road on the third...
there was about 9.8 miles of dirt
lots of bumps and holes, careless drivers, reckless passing

Just returned from our trip to SQ - took the Ensenada to Tecate road. Yes, there is about 10 miles of dirt/gravel road next to the new road
construction. It was easy to traverse - 25-35 mph - Rest of the road great - I would not try it in the rain! The military inspection going north (at
the top of the hill after leaving Santo Tomas before Ensenada) was very thorough this time. We were in line about 25 minutes - An interesting story -
A family in a car with Mexican plates was inspected, started to pull out and the driver threw some trash out the window, just a small wad of paper.
The military stopped him, made him and all his passengers get out, pick up the trash, and deposit in a trash can. They then pulled him over to the
side where 4 military guys starting emptying his car of everything! They were still going through the car as we pulled away. There's an obvious

Something like, "Keep your bad attitude to yourself." He was probably less than cordial when asked the normal questions as well.

We went around (Guadalupe to San Miguel) and then through the construction 3 weeks later. If its not raining I would stay on 3. Its not that bad.Nappo - 1-18-2010 at 09:45 PM
I remember in the 70's running out of brake fluid in my VW bus - took the dirt road from El Tigre (didn't know the name) just a road to the east from
the top of the free road- ended up in Guadalupe, bought some brake fluid and on we went for excellent surfing, fresh linguado at the fish market and
I'm sure a too long Hussong's visit! IT was all down hill dirt road and I just kept it in 2nd/3rd gear and didn't see another car!
