Any comments on Las Gaviotas Hotel in La Paz?

CP - 1-14-2010 at 10:29 AM

I searched first.
I can't seem to find a website for them, just a lot of TripAdvisor stuff.
I am looking for a hotel under $100/night, with secure parking at night. Have stayed at El Moro, Casa Jalisco, and two closed hotels we really liked )-: . They are all OK but we want to try something different.
Thanks.

Would like to mention that one needs to take ratings and reviews on Tripadvisor with a grain of salt. It seems they can easily be gamed. How else would Hacienda del Sol be rated #1 in all La Paz?

hola cp, i have stayed at hotel gardenias, now hotel bogumbilla ( ? ) in la paz several times and so have friends. it's under new ownership and i have read that it has been extensively remodeled with a new palapa restaurant in the huge courtyard and also has a very large swimming pool. it is about 10 or so blocks north of la perla and about four blocks east of the malecon. their room rates are around $ 60.00 per night and they have a secure walled parking lot that is gated and locked at night. the rooms are fairly spacious.

the cross streets are vicente guerrero and aquiles serdan. the numbers under the old hotel gardenias is: 12-2-30-88 fax 12-5-04-36 prefix should be 612 for la paz. their old email address is hotelgar@prodigy.net.mx

there is a carnival in february and rooms are supposedly booked a year in advance in most of la paz so you will need advance reservations. i would imagine it would be crowded and very noisy as the mexicans do like to party.

bien salud, DA RAT

Thanks Rat.
I did look at bogambilllias(sp) too. I read that the new owners had removed the secure parking area (which was the only reason I would not stay there). But I will check that out better before I write it off.
And THANKS for the reminders about Carnaval from you and Kate. We are just making a quick La Paz trip for the dentist and running into that big party would have been a huge mistake for us!!
And Bajahowood - yes I thought it bizarre to see Hacienda del Sol rated #1. And the written comments certainly were NOT flattering to the establishment. It doed not add up.

Thanks all! I am so glad to have Nomads to ask for advise.

If you don't mind staying out in El Centenario area, which might be a good thing during Carnival, check out-

CP - I believe Las Gaviotas is a time-share kind of place and depending on how full they are at any given time of the year they will (or not) rent a room to non-time-sharers. We stayed there a few years ago in the off-season and they were happy to have our business. The suite was large and comfortable, sleeping up to 6 if I remember correctly. Large master bedroom and bath, second bedroom with bath across the hall from it. The other 2 sleeping places are futon type fold-outs. Ample kitchen and lounge area. Nice view of the bay from the upper floors. Hope that helps.

Dog friendly?

bajalinda - 1-16-2010 at 09:52 AM

I didn't see any dogs there and I'm not sure what their policy is (sorry - didn't think to ask at the time).

Bajahowodd - 1-16-2010 at 01:48 PM

It is a time share. Time shares that are pet friendly tend to be in the minority.

We've stayed there twice and found it to be clean and the rooms large. Nice view of the water. We got it thru RCI.
