what are the jelly like critters in the water off the East cape?
woody with a view - 1-16-2010 at 08:29 AM
tourists?

You need to be a bit more specific as there are many different jelly like critters that inhabit these waters.

clear jelly with a dark reddish brown eye or maybe nucleus. Streaks of purplish colour in the water. Lots of mobullas jumping, wondering if that's
related??
WHICH ONE OF THESE PHOTOS LOOK LIKE WHAT YOU SAW? 1 or 2?

Squid will shoot a spout of water several feet from their bodies when they surface. Is this happening?
BooJumMan - 1-16-2010 at 09:57 AM
I have a similar experience. Just a few weeks back on the pacific side, near G. Negro, there were thousands of black/purple "ball-like" larva with two
long strings off the back end. They had small little flippers which propelled them. I would say they were no larger than 3/8 diameter. Anyone know
what these were?
BooJumMan - 1-17-2010 at 09:33 AM
Dang. Nobody?!

Sounds like you might be describing the small jellyfish commonly called "agua mala". A jelly-like round bubble for a body, about 1-2" in diameter,
with a single purple tentacle about 4-6" long.

Darn good guess.
They were pretty hard shelled. I shoulda took some pictures. I picked them up, there were literally thousands of them in the water, and quite a few
washed up on the beach.

Those things were everywhere where we were at too. Nobody had any idea what the heck they were.

My guess, pelagic tunicates? Salps possibly.
Cardon Man - 1-17-2010 at 01:13 PM
I'm no authority...but those tunicates that are thick at the East Cape right now look like salps. salpa maxima perhaps?

ELINVESTIGIG8R, The ones I see here in Los Barriles are like the ones in #1. What are they ? Your pict looks like small squid.
